I'm travelling here for 2 weeks this summer. We will be camping outside in a tent the whole period, so I'm not going to bring my new 8x10 camera. Don't need that extra weight. Now I have a few questions. How do you change film when you are outside camping? I have 10 holders for 4x5, but I'm guessing I'll want to shoot more than 10 photos (I expose every image 2 times, to be certain nothing goes wrong). I have been thinking about buying one of those changing tents. But this poses a new problem. How would I know which images are going to be developed at N-2 or N+2 etc. I have been thinking about bringing extra filmboxes and marking each of them with what kind of development times those negatives needs. Would that be the best solution? Space is not a problem, I have a 130L rucksack. I've also been pondering if I should get some new filters. Right now I have a Red filter It's this one

I'm thinking that the Red filer might be little too much, I will be a 1000m elevation for the most of the time. As far as I have understood, the light at such an elevation is much bluer than at sea level. The Red filter would then most likely absorb all my shadow details, if I am not terribly mistaken. I will mostly be shooting grand landscape, with a lot of sky. I don't expect there to be that many trees, but the foliage will most certainly be green. What filter would be good for such an appliance? For reference, I only shoot Ilford Delta 100 B&W film. Some films react differently to filters because of their contrast curve, yes?

Upcoming run to Shiprock for a few days. I will sleep at the rock most nights to be set for the next morning's photo. Taking 5X7 and 8X10. I can't enlarge 8X10 but there were a couple of places I thought I might try and tease out a dyptic or tryptic. I've got three little spots I've never been to that I plan to visit. Never foot-walked around the end of the famous South Dike, (and never seen a photo from down there), never climbed around the base of the white tower on the North West corner- there is a little cleft tucked in behind it that I want to get into, and never been one other place that I'm curious about: the fabled bone shrine.

Compared to what the rock climbers experience, none of us photographers have ever seen Shiprock at all. I'd love to shoot the shadow from the summit or on top almost anywhere, but very hard to climb solo with a big camera even in pack. I have climbed to the memorial to a fallen climber up in the black bowl and past a bit, but that is a spooky place by yourself.

I've got two specific shots of the West Dike I want to work on, my old friend the Meteorite and the three little towers on the very end where Navajo go and sing some mornings. There is also a scenic crack on the north side of the South Dike that needs some attention about 9:00 am. Schedule starts getting busy.

Oh yeah, maybe tease out a view of the grave on the back side where someone, (I suspect climbers), have buried someone under a stack of rocks up against a solid wall.

The more I shoot at Shiprock the more there IS to shoot, it seems.

For some strange reason I feel some wanderlust to get away from Vacationland to the desert southwest.

Are there places where I won't melt in the summertime? "Hot" for me is anything above 80f; I could handle low 90's if there's a breeze. I've had layovers through Phoenix and it felt ovenlike with 100+f heat coming in through the gap between the plane and gate. Is it cooler in the hills?

There seems to be much to explore and photograph within hours of Vegas/SLC/Phoenix.

Minimalism, escape, skies, nature, cold war history... Any life changing must visit places? Or upcoming large format photography events? (I kick myself for not jumping quick on the Tonopah temptation a couple years ago)

During my Navy career we had many communication stations located well away from populated centers. Less industrial interference, flat terrain for signal propagation etc. Also the sites also were serious contributions to local rural economies. The Croatia LF tour opportunity started the thinking process.

So here goes. No offense intended. Just pondering in the open. If 25% of Croatia is tourist standard travel and collected wonderful places.. Likely you come home with your version of tourist territory rephotographed.. That is where the countries natural beauty and wonders are.
The tour operator is assured that accommodations will be acceptable or better, and transportation predictable. All reasonable.

That would leave about 18,000 KM of paved road in Croatia for those who want to explore the majority of the country which is not 'Tourist Ready'. What are the possibilities of great photo discoveries when the tour is designed to explore the rest of the country?

Is that maybe 90 days worth of total seek to discover at 40 kph * 5 hr a day and 3 or 4 hours of LF set up shoot tear down, back in the car.
What would work for travel? Maybe 2 photographers sharing a self driven car. In don't see a mini van or small buss and a group as being workable when Boonie trekking...

So with a fresh Fodor's in hand I don't see more than basic information off the tourist routes.
Country Tourist organizations point you to the developed areas for Tourists.

So how to improve the percentages of fun a and rewarding LF travel in the rest of Croatia or any other country with significant exploration space?

My wife and I are going to spend a week there (Bayfield) later in May.
As the number of tourists in cities of note in Europe, so do the activities of the thousands of trick thieves increase.
Tourists are the main target...

As the number of tourists in cities of note in Europe, so do the activities of the thousands of trick thieves increase.
Tourists are the main target as:

- they generally have cash on them.
- they don't know the current danger spots/scenarios.
- they don't want to waste their precious holiday time with police reporting, which means that the same trick can be done over and over again at the same spot.
- any photographers will have their hands full!

An example.

Someone in my family was in Barcelona last week with a friend.
They know all about trick thieves and the reputation of Barcelona, particularly.
And they have seen the TV documentary about Roma girls travelling into the city centre for their daily "work".
Not only were they given a last minute warning from me - but the flat renting agency also put a warning in their last mail!

Anyway, they were taken in by one of the classic tricks.

Approached by 2 young female "students" in a central park.
"you have some birdshit on your" - "let us help you get it off".
Strangely these bird droppings smelt dreadful - which is quite unusual.
And the "students" happened to have cleaning materials with them.
They didn't realise what had happened during the cleaning process until an hour later!

The good thing is that they only go after cash.

So be very wary of any contact with people in difficulty, especialy where there is physical contact or you have to hold something in your hand (maps, for instance) or a very unusual occurance. People can be of all ages, although the park/bird shit scenario is usually done by young girls. I have heard that some travellors agree a safe word between them so that if someone gets suspicious they can alert the others.
Perhaps our Spanish friends can give some other current scams?

Highway 108 Sonora Pass was opened for the spring and summer season on Wednesday, April 24, and today Highway 4 Ebbetts Pass opened.

Yosemite National Park has stated that Highway 120 Tioga Pass is scheduled to open around Saturday, May 11.

These are pretty early openings for these high passes. Mornings will still be pretty chilly and snow melt runoff over the roads may freeze during the night, so travel with caution if you're headed up.
