I am bit spoiled from cheap car hire in Spain, so I though the rates available through budget airlines is a bit extreme for Krakow as a starting point. It's only for travel down to the Tatras and the Slovakian borders.
Anyone with good ideas or experience - also as regards the Polish equivalent of B&B in the summer?
Or is Bratislava a better starting point?

I puchased some 4x5 Toyo Film Holders (7) which were pretty much like new, they were all sent dark side showing of the Dark Slide so was surprised to find when I opened one up that it had film in it. The film has a shallow semi-circular notch about 8mm wide and 2mm deep, the film has a green/grey emulsion with a very dark grey back. I then took all the holders up to my newly created darkroom (just absolutely light tight not set up as a proper darkroom) and checked them all, they all are loaded with the same film stock.

I have since done a bit of searching on the interweb and it would seem that a lot of suppliers have supplied sheet film with just a single semi-circular notch and the same manufacturers have even used the same notch for different film speeds. All I know at the moment is that it is not Shanghai 100 as even though that also has a semi-circular notch the film has a blue colour which is completely different to this film/

So, as I do not know what the film speed is I was thinking of doing an 4 strip test (ISOs 25, 50, 100 & 400) on one of the sheets of film with each strip based on part of an overall exposure to try to determine the ISO.

Assuming the exposure is based initially for an ISO400 film and with a constant aperture, I realise that I would have to have a number of varying exposures to build up the required exposure for the strip, assuming an aperture chosen to allow 1/200sec at ISO400 the film would be exposed, then the darkslide would be inserted about an inch (giving the strip an exposure for ISO400), for the following strip I would need another exposure of 1/200sec plus a further exposure of 1/100sec before pushing the darkslide in for the strip (giving enough exposure for a speed of ISO100), the following strip would have already had exposures giving ISO100 before a further exposure of 1/50sec which would give an exposure of the remaining uncovered film equalling a film speed of ISO50 before covering up the strip, the last strip will receive a further exposure of 1/25sec which would then give an exposure equal to that required of an ISO25 film.

So just to make sure I have got this correct:

ISO400..........ISO200..........ISO100..........ISO50..........ISO25

.1/200............1/200 ............1/200...........1/200...........1/200
.....................1/200 ............1/200...........1/200...........1/200
..........................................1/100...........1/100...........1/100
...............................................................1/50............1/50
.................................................................................1/25

I wouldn't bother with the ISO200 as not many films have been made at that speed. Speeds in Orange are the exposures required to complete the next strip.

So, provided I secure the film with some double sided tape (made less sticky first) does anyone see any problems with my suggestion? If so, any better alternatives other than shooting 4 seperate sheets at the various ISOs?

Sorry if this has been discussed before but after selling my 240mm Rodenstock Rodagon some time back (stupid thing I did) I am now in search for an enlarging lens that will sufficiently cover 810. I have been looking at Rodagon replacements and apparently the prices have increased rather substantially since I sold mine. In my search one lens seems to pop up and that is the Gerogon which, as I understand, is/was a lens used in process cameras. In particular how would a 270mm f9 Gerogon perform as an 810 enlarging lens compared to other offerings from Rodenstock such as the 240 Rodagon I sold or even the 300mm Rodagon?

The other problem is that I want to use the lens on my Beseler 45 VXL with the 810 cold light head and so the mounting flange will probably be an issue with Beseler's 4" lens boards. The 240 I sold had the flange filed flat and flush with the lens board on two sides to properly fit into the lens stage.

I have an 8ft ceiling and I want to be able to do 16x20 or larger and I will probably have to design and build an enlarging table with a drop down baseboard to give me better print size options. The 240 Rodagon still seems to be my best bet but would be interested in your thoughts/experiences in this area. Is the Gerogon series lenses worthy as an enlarging lens, in particular, the 270mm? What is the size of the mounting flange and would this be too big to be accommodated by the standard 4" Beseler lens board?

Hi,
Regrettably, I no longer have the eyes of my youth, and I'm finding it difficult to focus wide-angle lenses with a great degree of accuracy.
I have a 72, 90 115, and 210; the 210 is always focused perfectly because it's much easier to see the subject when there's greater magnification.
I've been getting soft images lately with my wides, especially 72 and 90.

My Peak 5x loupe, normally a great piece of plastic, might not be up to the task of focusing the wider lenses using my foggy blinkers.

Can anyone recommend a good inexpensive loupe in the 8x or 10x range? Or any range?

ps-I don't use reading glasses, I'm a contact lens wearer.

Thanks in advance.

I've bought one from ebay after having done extensive research. Basically more useful than Linhof Technikas at more affordable and collectible package.

While checking out the movement in the back, I accidentally unthreaded one of the big screws completely off the body, and that little brass component fell off from the body. Took me a while to find it, but had a problem re-inserting it into the hole and threading that screw back for two reasons.

1. Due to gravity, and the shape of the brass component, it wouldn't insert correctly into the hole so when I later tried to lock the back movement by tightening the screw, it wouldn't lock.

2. Also, due to that wedge designed to control the threading and unthreading of the screw got in the way so I couldn't put the screw fast enough to position the brass component correctly.

After struggling a bit, I finally succeeded by upholding the camera so that the opening of the hole would face down, and by putting the brass component correctly on that concave side of the screw correctly and forecefully threading the screw despite the resistance from the wedge.
