Thanks Eots, Sergei & Ramiro. Those earlier portraits of vyd workers got displayed at a local gallery and this is first of a group of portraits that a winery wants me to do of their growers. An actual gig using the Deardorff!

It is so rare to capture a kid in a authentic feeling moment with any camera - so it is all the more impressive that you did it with 8x10. Of course half the credit belongs to her but you must have a great interaction with her that she would allow you to get that shot.

I also appreciate that it's a "modern" lens and I really like the way it renders the out of focus without any of the obvious bokeh dramatics.

That is my 8 year old niece. I exposed four sheets and that was the last one. All the others were spoiled by her jerking about at the last moment. We were actually both pretty pissed off with each other. For this one she was whingeing that I was giving her a sore neck by making her sit in the same position for too long and I was snarling back that if she could hold still we would have already been finished. Kids these days are not used to sitting still, particularly for photographs where they tend to constantly bounce around. Thanks for the nice comments - I'm glad that one sheet worked out.

OK; this is a November resurrected old portrait taken on the Island of Malta in summer of 1957. Street kids - a delightful bunch found just down the street from the still bombed out opera house. A quick grab shot using a speed graphic and old E3 daylight Ektachrome. Lens and exposure not recorded. 4X5 developed under trying conditions in a grungy hotel room. A fair bit of PS reconstruction here.

Here's my little secret Tri. I found a 400mm f4 projection lens that strangely covers my 20x24's without going all wideangle on me. One pop with 3000ws of strobe...my dagor won't do that. The best bit is that it cost me $200.

APX 100 of unknown age left in a holder for three years. Taken with a 105mm Apotar from an old Agfa folder. Mislit, but I'm way better with natural light than the artificial stuff and I plan to burn film to learn. I have, indeed, learned from this shot.

1. APX100 does not age well in a holder for three years.
2. I can still find my way around a large format camera.
3. I should find a new model.
4. The scanner glass is going to need replacing (the scuff is not on the film).

We wanted background to be rough and wrinkly. Third principle of composition - contrast. Said blob is the dress extension. If it were not for white surrounding you can see some shades on very dark grey on waves of material.

model asked for wrinkly stuff ;) seeing that she got her BFA and i never finished mine - i went with gut feeling of "well.. it will be interesting" :)) For me its interesting, b/c wall behind that couch i shot many times, so it adds a bit of difference.. For her it looks different for same reason - too much of polished glamour backgrounds.. Plus it adds contrast between model and wall in underlaying sense - polished look vs roughness.

Its quite odd that dress looks like blob - b/c i dont see it, even now, after sleeping on it.. But I might reprocess this image a bit differently - there is enough details in dress to be pulled, if i remember correctly :)

Ah.. ;) Its ok. I do weird stuff quite often, actually - experimentation is part of whole process..

I have normal ones from that session too, btw.. it just is good to do something a tad different.. In fact we cancelled one of concepts entirely b/c it was too much out of character for her and a bit too hard to prepare.. But i will do it with someone else ;) That would be pretty interesting composite shooting project.

I will post something more polished once i am back home - there are more shots drying on the rack..

The guy on the left must have had too much coffee for bkfast... he can't seem to stand still long enough for the exposure. Ha ha ha.

p.s. Looks like a fun trip!
Thanks Brian. It was a great trip...even if cold the first night.

That's lovely, Sergei. Is that the 300mm length or the converted length?

Thanks, guys.

Christopher, its original unconverted length. I am yet to use it at 500mm for anything but tests. I just like to have that option and they do have bigger coverage :)

Shot my first ever paper negative last night. I rated it at EI 3 but it looks like it needed at least EI 6. That will help, because the exposure time was four seconds. I'm still not much of a portraitist, but I'll keep practicing. I don't know how you guys do it, but there is a lot of great work in these portrait threads.

Willard & Ruby with basket of pecans
Folmer & Shwing 8X10 w/5X7 back
FP4 / HC-110 "H"

I had it set up to shoot on 8X10 film with my B&L 11X14 1C, but the Packard shutter I was using decided to freeze up at that moment (as my father is fond of saying - "maintenance begets maintenance"). I had just had the shutter apart to clean the night before :(
I didn't have another lens with me that would cover 8X10 so I put the 5X7 back on and used my Wolly 15" Tele Raptar.
