I have a Deskjet all-in-one inkjet that I got for $20. It does everything that I need, seriously. But it's out of ink, and I just refuse to spend $40 on cartridges.

Is there any way to obtain basic, simple document printing without playing the inkjet cartridge game?

I use Linux exclusively, so I need something that either has Linux drivers or works over the network with CUPS, or whatever.

I have a Brother HL 2240 Laser Printer, which is only about $50 at Staples. Very cheap to run. Don't know anything about Linux compat.

I've used several Brother laser printers. They have provided decent performance for the price, and are certainly more practical than ink jet if no color is needed. Toner cartridges can usually be refilled once or twice for much less than buying new cartridges.
