Hi, first post and i was wondering (although probably not large format print) the correct mat size for a 19 x 13 print image size 18 x 12 (generally 1/2 white border around image)

Any suggestions appreciated as it's time to get more supplies and i've been using 24x18 mats and frames.

cheers.
Ken

I also print 18x12 on 19x13 and use 24x18 mats & frames.

great thought it looked good okay. I might size the print to 18x12 as it makes it easier for calculating the mat cuts, as i've been printing on 19x13 and applying 1/2 inch border all around which most times doesn't size the print exactly to 18x12.

I dont think a border is absolutely necessary. In the times past the mat was used to absorb moisture from the air and keep it off the print. When they mounted in a wooden frame, oils from the frame would leach into the mat and stain the mat and print. The border around the print and mat kept the image from being discolored from the mat. Also the main purpose of the mat is to keep your image from making contact with the glass, and to absorb the moisture around the image. Obviously archival print mounting has changed over the years with the introduction of new materials. But think about what your picture will look like in a hundred years. As far ascetics as your main goal on how exactly to mount and mat your print depends on the eye of the beholder..

i do it however i like and feel

For that exact same configuration, I use 26x20.

I like my 13x19 prints with a 1/2" border in a 22x 28 frame, but then I like wide mats, and I can also put 16x 20s in there in a pinch.
