I just heard from Chapters who tell me that they don't carry View Camera magazine anymore. It's because the distributor who carried it was taken over by another distributor who then dropped the title.

Has anyone up here been able to source VC locally ?

The last issue I got from Chapters was the Nov/Dec one.

HELP !! I'm getting withdrawal ....

Can we get subscriptions in Canada ?

The mails still work, so there should be no problem subscribing to it.

Call 800-894-8439 or try camartsmag@aol.com. The subscription rate for Canada is $40/year.

It is annoying that the subscription rate to Canada is more than the news stand price. Luckily there is another store in Halifax that carries it beside Chapters.

I buy mine at McNally Robinsons here in Calgary. I prefer to support a local ie. Canadian company rather than purchase a subscription. The more photo mags we buy at the local book stores the more likely they will continue to stock them. It might cost me a bit more to do it this way, but at least it keeps people employed here at home. McNally even calls me when they come in. They set aside Black and White Photography (UK), View Camera and BW Magazine for me. If you have one of their stores in your area just drop in and they will do the same for you. If you come in and decide not to purchase that issue, no big deal they just put it out on the rack.

Edward and Eric, I'd encourage you both to double-check with your respective sources, because it sounded like the decision was out of Chapters' hands.

In other words the new bulk distributor of the magazines (i.e. they supply a whole host of titles) decided to drop VC from its line-up.

Now there's a chance your local retailers may have sourced it from the same place.

Have either of you guys bought the latest (Jan/Feb) issue from them ?

Thankfully Black and White Photography (UK) is still available at Chapters.

Another example of big business deciding for the consumer, the frickers !

I rarely have a problem getting View Camera in Toronto. I typically buy it at Pages on Queen Street West at John Street. I like to buy it on the news stand because I have a small postal box and don't want it to be folded.

Pages Books and Magazines (http://www.pagesbooks.ca/)

Good luck.

Ron it's the consumer who spoke. If enough people had purchased the magazine at the bookstore they would continue to carry it. Niche markets are tough and at some point I guess it just didn't make economic sense for them to continue to carry VC. There is limited real estate on the magazine racks and I bet the slug of new digital photo mags are taking over. I'm sure even the least popular digital mag outsold VC. While I don't like it, I can see why it could happen.

Ron, I can never get the January/February issue until at least the first week in February (that is, always a month or so behind) so I haven't even looked yet.

Same here in Calgary.

If you live in Ottawa, "Mags and Fags" on Elgin carries both VC and CA and all the other good photo mags. Process Photo on Bank has cuurent issues and back issues into 2002.

I have to second Edward's comments - it completely puzzles me as to why periodicals like View Camera and B&W (among others) make it completely unattractive to purchase subscriptions in Canada. The Canadian dollar is as strong as it has been in a long time (for non-Canadian forum users --> Canadians have to purchase most of these subscriptions in $US), but it still costs more to subscribe to the aforementioned periodicals than it does to purchase them at the full cover price at the news stand! Am I missing something here?!

So Steve what's the scoop?? Why do we have to pay so much for a subscription?

Ron,

I just bought the January/February issue today at a small magazine store in Vancouver, British Columbia called, "Your Mother Should Know." It's a great store and the folks try and bring in whatever is requested.

I second Eric's comment about supporting a local Canadian company rather than subscribing. Besides, subscriptions generally come through the mail looking like they've gone 14 rounds with Mike T..... all beaten and chewed up!

I asked the owner about the probability of the distributors not bringing in this magazine any longer and he hasn't heard anything about it.

Cheers

Hi Steve, just called the number you gave and Bill is not at that office but I did talk to Debbie. A one year subscription is $69.55 CDN. At Chapters I was paying $6.75 per issue, or, $40.50 per year; $46.58 including tax.

We are charging Process Photo $4.00US per copy to cover the magzine and shipping. It sounds like there is a big markup. When we were taking subs directly we were charging $40US per year. Should we reconsider and take them directly again?

Hi Steeve ,Congradulations for your wonderful View Camera magazine. It is difficult or impossible to find one copy of your magasine in our small community. It will be fine if you let us the choice to take subscription directly from you. Thanks

Steve, it looks to me that the markup is 100% (exchange rates may vary); 50% higher than news stand prices.

In fairness, the stated mark-up of 100% failed to include re-mailing cost which currently is around $2.60 CAD per magazine including GST. Labels/handling add a small but non-negligible cost as well.
