View Full Version : email notification problem

In the previous version of the site, when you received an email notification of a reply to a thread you were watching,
the email included the text of the reply, so you could read it without accessing the thread.

In the new version that text is no longer included, forcing the member to visit the thread to read the response.

This was obviously done to increase the site hit count, with the consequence of inconveniencing the members.

Thanks for the comment, Leigh. It's something for us to look into.

On the flip side of that coin, however, is the number of people who didn't pay attention to the ****DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL ******, and replied anyway, only sending an e-mail to the mods. ;)

I agree with Leigh's comment. Getting a thread response that contains the post is very useful when traveling as I can read posts that I am interested in without having to try to read the post from the forum page on my tiny phone display.

Also, since the upgrade I have not received any notification about new posts in the 'For Sale' forum even though my setup and preferences still show that I am subscribed to that forum. Do I need to do anything on my end to resume getting notifications from 'For Sale'???

Thanks

john

Although your profile shows you to have "Instant e-mail notifications" (i.e. a separate new e-mail for each new thread), it is possible that you may need to delete existing subscriptions and re-subscribe. Similarly, some, but not all users have needed to manually clear their LFPF cookies to resolve login issues.

From the new FAQ:

How do I subscribe to a thread or forum?

To subscribe to a forum, click the 'Forum Tools' link above the list of threads then select 'Subscribe to Forum'. You will then have the option to choose the subscription mode for this forum. If the forum that you are subscribing to has any child forums (forums within a forum) then your subscription will be extended to these automatically.

To subscribe to a thread, click the 'Thread Tools' link at the top of the list of posts then click 'Subscribe to Thread'. You can then choose the subscription mode that you wish to use for that thread.

Hi Ralph,

The solution to that problem is to insert the following in your notification email header:

Reply To: deadletter @largeformatphotography.info without the space before the @ sign.*

Your email currently has no Reply To tag, so responses go to the From email address.

- Leigh

*note: I had to include the space so the da**ed parser would stop flagging it as an email address.

Hi Ralph,

I did as you suggested. I unsubscribed from the for sale forum and then re-subscribed. Apparently no change as I'm still not getting emailing of new threads.

Thanks.

I'm with Leigh too. Getting the reply in text mode in your email notifications is a great feature.

I only get a daily mail with a summary of threads started in that forum.
It is probably an option that the moderators have to enable to sent also instant email notification for a forum subscription.

Or it that an option that the moderators want disabled.

Regards.

I think you can change that in your settings Mike.

It would be nice to know if the instant email notifications can contain the message posted with this version.

Ramiro,

But when I subscribe to the for sale/wanted forum, I can only choose between "trough your controlpanel", "daily updates by email" and "weekly updates by email".
Other email notifications are instantly.

Mike, "through your control panel" should allow your profile (where you are currently set to "instant") to control the subscription.

That's one option. Thanks, Leigh.

The problem of doing that, or simply ignoring the errant responses, is that it could lead to communications errors between members.

This is not a big deal. I AM getting instant emails from the 'regular' parts of the board. The 'for sale' forum is still sending once-a-day emails with all the postings. Maybe there is a separate switch for the 'for sale' and the rest of the "Community" section?

I have un-subscribed and subscribed to see if that changed anything it didn't.

Thanks, no rush - just if you have time.

Hi Ralph,

Have set that, but still no instant messages.
Only getting direct messages from messages I replied to.

Hi Ralph,

I was __assuming__ that the notification emails came from a unique email account, distinct from inter-member and other communication.

Perhaps not.

Your guess about subscriptions within the "Community" forums may be correct, John. However, a quick scan of admin configuration options doesn't show any obvious answers.

All automated responses from the system come from a single e-mail ID, the same ID used for "Contact Us" inquiries.

OK. The easy/simple solution would be to change that.

On closer inspection, it appears the "Instant" mode (one e-mail notification per post) is only available for thread subscriptions, not forum subscriptions. With forum subscriptions, one e-mail per day is sent.

Tom is going to look for a plug-in that can get around that limitation.

My default mode of notification (Settings > General Settings) has been “Instantly, using e-mail”; this apparently results in no notification of changes if a forum subscription is set to “Through my control panel only.” Unsubscribing from each forum and resubscribing with Notification Type set to “Daily updates by e-mail” results in getting the daily notifications. Hopefully, this will hold true for anyone else who was not getting notifications.

The new version is generally pretty nice, but a few thoughts:

A “Help” link would probably have obviated many of the questions posed after the upgrade. On this and other forums that use vBulletin.
I eventually guessed that “control panel” meant “Settings > General Settings” (though it was nice to have Ralph confirm it). But this seems a description out of Rocky Raccoon—best to stick with one term for something, especially something unique to particular software. At the very least, the equivalence should be mentioned in the FAQ or a “Help” link.
Though it’s certainly better to get daily updates than none, coming a day late to many threads can make posting almost irrelevant. Most other forums with which I’m familiar offer instant notification, regardless of forum software. And it’s usually a cardinal sin to release an upgrade that mysteriously breaks existing settings, as apparently was the case for everyone with “instant” notification of forum changes.

These would seem issues that the vBulletin people should address rather than Tom (and probably many other users as well) having to work around.

Sometime around yesterday I started receiving instant emails of postings to threads I had contributed to/requested.

And the actual body of the posting was included. HooRay!!!!

Thanks for bringing this feature back.
