View Full Version : 2011/2012 Print Exchange Call for Entries !!!
Whether you’re a Newbie or an Old Timer to LF, this is a great opportunity to participate in a unique print exchange. You'll receive beautiful prints and have your work displayed in the online LF Gallery. This will be the fifth exchange I will sponsor and the previous Print Exchanges have been very successful and rewarding. The rules are posted below and have changed from last year, so please read through them. Please respond with your request to participate if your name was not added during the Poll so we can start counting how many participants there will be. Please post all questions here so everyone can share the info.

Print Exchange 101
He is an example of a print exchange with 10 photographers.

Ansel, Diane, Mathew, Dorothea, William, Margaret, Walker, André, Roger, and Tina mail nine (9) prints according to the print specs to their print exchange facilitator. The facilitator then sorts out these prints so they each group member receives one print from each member of the group. Everyone receives nine (9) prints, one print from each of their group members.

There is monetary cost involved in this Print Exchange:
1. You will need to print nine (9) prints
2. You will need to ship these prints to Tallahassee, Florida USA
3. You will need to pay (PayPal or check) for the return shipping*
*Shipping fees will be determined after the prints are ready to be shipped. You will be notified via a PM. In previous exchanges, the packages averaged a 1-lb shipping weight. We do not want to exceed the 1-lb weight as International Shipping Fees are costly! There will be US, Canadian, European, Australian, etc. mailings. DO NOT MOUNT YOUR PRINTS!
Please note that I will not have an exact idea on your return shipping costs until I have your address and print packet ready for shipping. This all takes a bit of time and cooperation. Please be sure to send your "Shipping Info Sheet" along with your prints. If I do not receive a clearly filled-out "Shipping Info Sheet," I may have no clue whom the prints belong to.
Groups will be determined by the FIFO method:
We use the FIFO (first-in, first-out) method when assigning which participant goes into which group. I will post the shipping date below and everyone is to ship their prints by this time. Shipping before the established date is fine to do, but, if you ship long after the established ship date, you may end up with no one to exchange prints with and I will have to ship your packet back to you.
When I receive 10 packets in, I will ship 10 packets out!
I will list the names of each 10 member Group as the packets ship out so you know when to expect your packet. If stuff happens and you are unable to ship your prints on time, your prints will be placed in a group and shipped out when the group reaches 10 participants. If you are the last to ship your prints and there is no one else left to exchange your prints with, I will exchange one of my prints with you and look for others to contribute, but I cannot guarantee a full 10 print packet. I do believe this is a fair and efficient system. This system may motivate some participants to get their packets out ASAP. Hey, whatever works!
Print Packets
Everyone is to ship nine (9) prints to me according to the Print Specs below. If you send 10 prints, I will assume you are sending one for me which is greatly appreciated and the reason I do all the work, but you are not obligated to do so.

PRINT SPECS
Must be created on a VIEW CAMERA (film or digital)
Black & White or Color
Wet darkroom or digital prints
NOT larger than 11x14" paper
NOT smaller than 8x10" paper
Image area can be any size as long as it is on paper from 8x10" to 11x14"
NO Mats due to added shipping weight
NO Mounted prints due to added shipping weight
Filters/Digital Manipulation OK
2011/2012 creation date
Include an info sheet attached to the back of each print* on your tech specs, location, etc.
*Tape it to the back or include it in the print bag (if you are using them), but do not send me a pile of paper to cut, sort, and tape to the back of your prints!!

In the past a few folks included return shipping materials along with their prints. If you care to do this, that is fine, but I will not recycle the outside envelope and I will not reuse boxes! I will recycle the inner cardboard if it arrives in good shape. I will not supply cardboard or shipping materials for free. To anyone that is in need of shipping materials, I offer the following return shipping packet or similar for $4.00.
I have a mail order business and purchase these materials in bulk. It would include a heavy cardboard or bubble mailer, two backing boards, and an archival bag that will safely store your prints for years to come. You are under no obligation to purchase the shipping packet, and if you do not, remember to include NEW return shipping materials in your packet. I do not make any money off of these shipping materials; I offer this because it makes my job easier. It may actually save you postage if you do not mail shipping materials to me with your prints.
An attachment containing a photo of a shipping packet is enclosed at the end of this post.
If you are going to participate, post your name here and I will respond with acknowledgment and add you to the list and we EXPECT you to participate. If something comes up and you need to withdrawal, please notify me so I do not waste time trying to contact you. I will respond to questions as soon as I can and will check into this forum when I can. Updates for shipment arrivals will be posted at least twice a week while I work around my schedule. Packets will be prepared on weekends, shipped the following Monday and a post announcing the shipment will be posted in this thread.
If you do not have a print already chosen for this exchange, use this opportunity to cultivate your creativity. I will be producing a print exclusively for this exchange and I cannot wait to get going! I have had a busy year and have not had the leisure to be behind my view camera as much as I would like. Now I have to because I want to exchange prints with you guys! Thanks for the motivation!!

i am printing in y DR for the 1st time in months....so i will make some extra prints for the exchange.
all will be from the "tonopah temptation" (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=75770&highlight=tonopah+temptation) with jim galli and friends.

I have read and read but can find no guideline/suggestion for variety in the prints supplied!
Is it considered bad form to send a mixture of prints or bad form to just roll out one? Not that I have made my mind up yet about what I would like to contribute.

Since the prints are going to different people your fine just knocking out a batch of the same image. That's what I've always done and I'm pretty sure that's what everyone else does.

Steven, we ask that you print one image 9 times. You may elect to send 9 different images, but if you want to be included in the online gallery, there will only be one image uploaded to represent your work in the 2011/2012 Print Exchange gallery.

Good Morning Photogs!
Now is the time to *** start printing or start shooting *** your Print Exchange work.
Please post in this thread when you have shipped your packet so I can be on the lookout.
Remember I will be updating the arrivals list twice a week; probably Tuesday and Friday, so do not get upset if your package is sitting at the post office waiting for pick up, it will get picked up! Please do not use Next Day Air shipping since I may not get it "Next Day" due to the pick-up schedule. I prefer packages sent to my PO Box and not my home as I am not always home to acccept them and they are safer sitting behind the counter at the post office--please consider all of this before you email me.
It is nine prints (10 if you are sending one for me) you send; preferably all the same image, but you can send a mix. Only one of your images will be posted in the on line gallery.
I will be posting arrivals in the Print Exchange Print Arrivals List as they come in.
When 10 participant packets have arrived, this will complete our first group, Group #1, and I will ship them out soon after the group has been posted.
I look forward to seeing, holding, smelling, and displaying your work!

Though I will likely submit a view camera photo from a 4x5" negative, when looking through my likely candidates, I wanted to ask if 4x5" film from a pinhole camera is acceptable, or if I should just eliminate those photos from the start...

David, a pinhole camera does not qualify as a "view camera."

By all means, submit some tonopah pictures. The light is great in tonopah.
Lucky me, I'm listed under my all time favorite number (32) for this... Nice. I've got a few I'm looking at already from here in Africa, and have a few weeks in NC, CO, and AZ before the I have to sent them off. This is going to be fun.

I had taken 30 shots of 4x5 film to be developed and when I got them back and opened the box none of the film was developed... Not very pleased, so if the one I was planning on using is toast I will use one of the ones from my Africa trip. I will not be detoured by this setback.

Sorry to hear this Kav. As much as I dread having to do my own film processing (black & white is actually easy so I should not complain!), I totally get why we as artists need to keep as much of the process close at hand. I hope you can recoup as much as possible from this disappointment. Backup plans are there for a reason and good for you for having one! :)

I work on the sorting, packaging and mailing labels in stages on the weekends. It actually takes a few hours to get them all ready. I then ship on the following Monday or Tuesday depending upon which day my schedule takes me in the direction of the post office. You will receive notice via email when your packet has shipped so it will be this Monday or Tuesday. Thank you for the inquiry for everyone to read! :)

I'm going to be a bit later than the others.
I made my prints but then found I should have examined that negative more closely. So I wanted to print another but getting married and going on my honeymoon interfered. I already let Darr know ahead of time - I hope to print this weekend and get mine out next week. But if that doesn't work I will send the ones I already made.

I'm up north in the frozen wasteland eagerly awaiting the arrival of my package of group 3 prints. :D Last year it only took 3 or so days longer than for those in the continental US......must be the last few hundred miles via dog sled that adds the time :rolleyes:

I would like to say the same for TN. It was around 90 the other day. I cut my hair shorter than it has ever been, so I've been sunburned twice already.
Now we have a freeze watch in effect til Thursday morning. They said it could get down in the 30s tonight.

Received my package yesterday afternoon. Terrific images and a great variety as well. Had a quick look and then took them to the monthly meeting of the local photo club, in part to show off, in part to show the advantages of taking part in a print exchange (and how much easier it is for photographers or printmakers than sculpturers or painters) and in part to show some contact prints to the members who for the most part have had very little exposure to LF. Thanks to all who participated, to all those who were in my group and a special thanks to Darr for not only organizing the exchange but for you beautiful images of your Mother's spoon, it is simply fantastic.

I'm printing silver gel on fiber based paper so I would need 5 or 6 days to get another negative chosen and printed.

Will swap chemicals and paper for the final try soon. Who thought that duplicate contact printing could be so troublesome!

You need more focusing fluid to lubricate the printer.
Pay a visit to your local distillery.

After last years print exchange I decided I would never again contact print except for the usual RC print that stays beside the negative in the binder.
That was one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had. I really want to print that negative I used @ 16x20 or larger but I can't even force myself to put it into the enlarger and get started.

Mine just went off via Priority mail today, expected delivery Monday.
I had to hunt down my prints today, but I got them! The postal workers tend to stay away from streets named "Missile Ordnance Road" for some reason. But I digress, such wonderful work from everyone! All of the different styles, and methods were just fantastic. I admit I will have to step up my game for next year. I feel that I am way out of my league here. But in a good way. :cool:

Stephane, Your work always amazes me and the amount of effort and costs you (and other international participants) have to put into to participate keeps me motivated to continue this community effort. I appreciate all of our photographers, but when I see what these particular participants go through to share there work, it speaks loudly to the purpose of the effort. "Thank you!" :)
