View Full Version : Which 8x10 light table ?

Since some time I am using the 'Kaiser Slimlight 2421' light box (only 5x7" area, runs also on 6 AA batteries) which is neither too bright, nor offers homogeneous light intensity and even started to act recently (some contact problems) - so I am seriously thinking of getting something large, better built quality and better light quality. The main use is viewing slides & negs with a loupe.

I realized that 5x7" was a bit small - 8x10" (or about 20x30 cm) would be enough.

Simple question - which light boxes do you use/like? As only cheap stuff (like the one I have) can be seen in a shop, I would be buying online, so your help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: I understand that there are different technologies available - recently also LED - would that be preferable? Also - what luminosity (how many 'Luxes' :) )?

I have a Seerite portable light box I really like. It wasn't expensive and you may even be able to find one locally at Michaels or Aaron Brothers and take advantage of those coupons. Its super for louping negatives!

I got one of these for free since they are obsolete. Works awesome.

Great idea on the OHP!

If you're in a DIY mood, it'd be very easy to make one out of a couple of those mini flouro fixtures that are cheap as chips now. A bit of ply, a piece of glass and a scrap of leelux...

I got Porta-Trace from B&H last year, it is uniform and works well for me. Important is to get model with two lamps.

That's the one I have. I've had it since the mid 90s or so, or maybe an earlier version that looks just like it. Works fine, not too expensive.

Hi Matus,

I've a light panel by Just Normlicht that allows me to view a lot of 4x5 transparencies simultanously (around 10 or 12).

It would also work for two 8x10s.

That's the one:

Thanks. I should have probably mentioned that I am in Germany as many of the models mentioned can not be found here. However I was able to find the NormLicht models.

- Martin -
The NormLicht light tables look fine - how is the build quality (I would be interested in a little bit smaller mode (http://www.just-normlicht.de/de/articledetail.html?id=47))?

I would still love to hear whether anybody has experience with LED light tables.

Hi Matus, sorry for the late reply.
The build quality is quite good.
You also have the possibility to hang a larger ones on a wall.

I've been using an 8X10 Kaiser "Handylight" (German) for over a decade now, obtained at a early century Freestyle blowout. I installed a cheap switch from the home store so that I can leave it plugged into an e- outlet. Even light an no problems.
