View Full Version : Unified View broken on iPhone

Hi,

If I visit the forum from an iPhone 4 (running iOS 5.0.1), the forum mostly works fine. However if I click Unified View, I get "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

What seems to be happening is that the phone has stored the fact that the search page returns a redirection to the search results, therefore it immediately goes to the same old (now expunged) search-id every time I click, without actually performing the search.

I haven't checked the HTTP codes the forum uses, but I think it should be "302 Moved Temporarily" not "301 Moved Permanently" for this purpose. If a 301 is used, that would explain why the phone caches the redirection.

It works fine on desktop browsers.

I have the same issue with "New Posts" and "Today's Posts" since I updated my iPhone 4's software to 5.0.1 last week.

Hmmm.........I have an IPod Touch 4 with 5.0.1 and everything works fine.

That's odd. It works fine with my iPhone 4S with 5.0.1. Have you tried clearing the cookies and cache under Setting>Safari?

It is a KNOWN issue with this site. There have been several other threads about it.

What, exactly, is the known problem?

Is it an issue with the Forum hosting software? Is it an issue with 5.0.1? Is it an issue with iPhone 4 updating to current software incarnation?

I'm using Atomic Browser and it seems to be free of this issue. Under Safari and ios5 5.0.1 couldn't get the links to work. Atomic also seems to do well with sites who want to force you to a mobile version like ESPN, taking you to the traditional site...EC

(please ignore this post, I'm getting the counter to roll over to ensure a new Unified search result)

Deleting data and history on the iPhone made it work once.

I noted that my desktop was going to the same searchid, presumably for lack of new posts, so I made the above post and watched the searchid roll over. Click the link again on the phone, get the old searchid and the stale-data error.

I had a look at the web server output of the Unified View link and it's a 301 as I suspected. I therefore think it is the fault of the forum software and that iPhone Safari is doing the officially-correct thing. Probably the other browsers have a "don't cache redirects when the target has CGI-GET parameters" hack in them.

So why is it working fine on the iPod touch do you think? Same technology and software...Except just wifi and no phone.

Neither the "Unified View" nor the "New Posts" functions work on my new iPad, but I am having no trouble posting this reply.
So both the iPad and the iPhone have the same issue with this forum...

That is indeed a puzzle. I suspect that you maybe have a very slightly subtly different version of the browser from me, since it used to work. I don't know whether the breakage has been caused by LFPF upgrades or my phone upgrades. Or it could be a matter of some browser setting (e.g. disable cookies) disabling the redirection caching on yours, I don't know.

However, this is a definite problem that I and others can replicate reliably, and the LFPF forum output is wrong according to the HTTP specification for this purpose. The fact that it works on other browsers is I suspect due to other browsers working around quirky software like this.

And of course I have a much much better chance of getting LFPF to fix the forum software than I do of having Apple change their quirks-handling code!

I can view neither New Posts or Unified View on my iPhone 4 or iPad. Clearing History does nothing; I'm not going to clear my cache and lose signins every time I want to view LFF.

Between this and problems at RFF, I'm finding more time available for other things, and learning to appreciate that.

Are "New Posts" and "Today's Posts" also knackered? (They are on my iPhone).

Yes, it's too bad, my iPhone is the same way. I have to pick through the forum to read the threads. Quite annoying.

APUG has a new mobile skin that's a killer add on.

BTW we are looking into upgrading the software. Ken and Tom are looking into it, but as an all volunteer effort it won't be tomorrow.

However I've not cleared my cache, and I did several "Unified View" reads, each of which returned a different searchid. Haven't checked whether the forum is returning 301 or 302.

If the forum software hasn't changed, it's very strange.

On our full size - desk computers, I am getting the problem with UNIFIED VIEW after Vista upgraded my home computer to IE ver.9 --. No problem at all at work where we still run good old XP PRO and IE ver 8.:(

Yes, IE9 triggers the issue, earlier IE versions and the latest version of Firefox don't.

The upgrades of the vBulletin software are currently scheduled for the February time frame.
