View Full Version : Streamlining my lens line-up

So far I have been running two sets of lenese in parallel based on weight ans taste for my lanscape photography

1) HEAVY
Nikkor-SW75/4.5, Nikkor-SW 90/8, Fuji-NW 125/5.6, Nikkot-W 180/5.6 (plasmat) and Nikkor-M 300/9 (Tessar)

2) LIGHT
Angulon 90/6.8, Xenar 150/5.6 and Xenar 210/6.1 (tessar)

I just won a bid for a Nikkor 200/8 (Tessar) that I have been looking for for some time :p .
I feel that it gives the chance to simply streamline the two lines into one with taking the Angulon for hiking and the Nikkor otherwise.

So what I have now in mind is reduce all my lenses to:
Nikkor-SW 90/8
A good and small 135mm i.e Sirona-S, Sironar/Caltar-N, Fuji-NW 135/5.6
Nikkor-M 200/8
Nikkor-M 300/9

For hiking I will simply take the Angulon 90/6.8 and leave the Nikkor-SW at home. Or leave both 90-SW and 135 at home in favour of 125/200/300

As this means quite a bit of trading or selling of lenses, any comments suggestions on that strategies?

Cheers,

Luc

FWIW, I spend most of my time carrying camera and lenses on kind of long hikes. I've come up with a couple of "kits" as well. My solutions are similar to yours.

Extremely light:
100mm WF Ektar f/6.3
135mm Nikkor f/5.6
203 Ektar f/7.7 or a Fujinon A 180mm f/9
Fujinon A 240mm f/9

I really like my 203 Ektar and the Fuji A lenses (which are not Tessars and have lots of coverage) for their small size and great quality. Ditto for the WF Ektar, except there isn't much room for movements.

When I can carry more, I swap out the 100mm Ektar for a 90mm SA f/8 and add the Nikkor M 300mm. I also have a Fujinon SW 75mm f/5.6 that I'll carry instead of the Nikkor 300mm if I'm anticipating needing more short focal lengths. Sometimes I can convince a hiking partner to carry a lens or two for me :)

For times when I can carry more or am working from the car, I like my WF Ektar 135mm for the coverage and sharpness, I'll also toss in a plasmat 150mm and the Nikkor M 450 (monster) and take all of the above as well.

Best,

Doremus

I prefer giving away my tripod to a willing sherpa ;)

Is there a reason why you don't use the Nikkor-SW 75/4.5, aside from the weight? Is the 90mm usually as wide as you want to go?

If I had the Nikkor-SW 90/8 I probably wouldn't use the Angulon 90mm f/6.8. Do you find much difference in image quality between the two 90mm lenses?

I have found that 90mm is quite wide enough for landscape and in truth in many cases 125 or 150 does the trick. The 75 and 90 are of the same size and feel a little bit redudndant for my general use so far.

There is a difference in coverage and contrast in favour of the 90/8 but the Angulon is one fourth of the size.
