8x10 lens

:) May have finally bought a 8x10 camera . But need to know what onew lens to purchase to get the ball rolling for it. I like to shoot land scapes if that helps . Positive input please thanx craig:D

My suggestion would be to start with something semi wide, small and in a Copal #1... like a Schneider G-Claron 240mm f/9 or a Fujinon W 250mm f/6.7. Both available for approximately <$500 USD, and sometimes considerably less depending on condition. Also available for usually a little more is the Fujinon A 240mm f/9, but it has less room for movements.

I second the G-Claron or Fujinon W as mentioned above.

The 240 mm is one of my favorite focal lengths when shooting 8x10.

The 240 G Claron is a fine lens with the benefits of a modern shutter and light wieght (plus the filters from my old Nikon SLR kit fit ;) ). Other possibilities you may find worth considering would be the Kodak 14" Commercial Ektar & 10" WF Ektar, 375mm Ilex Acuton, 12" Goerz USA Dagor, Wollensak 1A triple convertible & 12" Velostigmat(the 12" Velostigmat is a big lens though!) 14" Artar, 16-1/2" Artar & 19" Artar.

I purchased a Fujinon W 250mm f/6.7 off of ebay for $270.00 including shipping. The only thing wrong with it being a touch of Schneideritus. I have since seen examples of the same lens sell on ebay from $300.00 to $350.00. What a bargain for a great lens!

If you are patient they show up occasionally.

I started off 8x10 with a Fuji W 300/5.6. Not a light lens, but have enjoyed it. I work a lot under subdued light (under the redwoods), so the f5.6 throws a lot of light onto the GG. Out in the open it is not as much of a problem. Focusing f11 lenses in the dark forests takes some extra time.

I found the 300mm focal length (on the wide-side of normal) very easy to work with, and it is my lens that sees the most use.. I did recently get a Fuji W 250/6.7 that I have yet to get on a lensboard, but I am looking forward to working with it. I have a small 210mm barrel lens (Wolli Graphic Raptor) which is also a fun focal length for 8x10.

So while I would prefer the 300mm as a single lens kit, I can see where the 240 or 250mm lenses would also work as a single lens kit. My preference just happens to be closer to the "normal" focal lengths.

I can vouvh for the Fujinon 250's excellence; the f6.7 version covers almost 400mm of IC, and it's a very sharp lens in a relatively small shutter.
