Hi Alex,

Very fine portrait of your daughter. It's interesting to see that there are so many wet collodion portraits that exhibit this intense look, just like this one. Probably very white eyes??

Anyway did I said, that I like it?

Cheers,
Marko

My bad, Alex. Sclera on wet plate became very, very white and the contrast against the rest of the face tones looks like it intense the look. Uff, that's a bit more complicated to write down in English, that I would prefer:rolleyes:, but hopefully you'll understand.

I like this too, I remember me and the model starting climbing the mountains at 6:30 in the summertime, and looking for this spot were the light is spilling from the back for few minutes, so we had to hurry up and climbing. I used to shoot with my Arca F line, and a heavvy Bogen-Manfrotto 055 and the arca ballhead on it.

I used delta 100 film, and 180 Sironar-N. But those are only poor details...

thanks for all of you for appreciation.

Salmacis in color, in the back of her there is a fall.

The blurring of the water tell the long exposure,
something beetween 1-4 seconds for those shots.
I appreciate a lot this marvellous still model!

There is something a little menacing about this. Maybe it's just me, but it brought to mind a film called The Bad Seed. It's partly the expression, but more so the lighting. I wonder whether the digital image and/or my computer screen accurately capture the lighting and, if so, whether this is what you intended. Or perhaps my reaction to the photograph is unique to me.

Michael/Daniel - thank you both
r.e. - interesting - I suppose b/c I know her I never felt it was a menacing image - but can see that perhaps it could be interpreted as such. It was window lighting but printed/processed dark.

Well, you're doing great work- I like the self portrait too-
Well done on the camera, and holders, you're making good use of it-

If I could ask- what introduced you to LF photography, and what inspired you to make the camera? ( http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showpost.php?p=786198&postcount=365 )It seems unusual that someone so young could be so accomplished at something that could be seen to have a limited interest to the youth of today-
Do any of your contemporaries share your interest?

For an activity that demands a beard, preferably grey, you're doing very well-
and if more people like you continue to demand film, then maybe there's hope yet...

Will look out for more pictures from you-

Well, I started out about a year and a half ago with a 35mm SLR, shot mostly color and had it processed by the photo-lab. Slowly, I took up developing and printing my photographs and moved up to medium format with a TLR. However, once I saw a collodion plate done by a fellow photographer in Bulgaria, I knew I wanted to do large format. So it seemed a natural progression - 35mm-6x6-8x10. I decided to go with 8x10, because it is large enough to contact print, so I circumvent the expensive LF enlargers and equipment. The camera and holders were a fun project to do with my father, and it involved a lot of research and staring at photographs of other people's equipment :)
So, here I am, doing LF photography in my spare time, trying to do something worthwhile in it.
As for any peers taking interest in large format, most people are excited to see such a camera, but here in Bulgaria, it is too expensive for most average people to go LF.

No Aero Ektar here and nothing for sale. One is Universal-Heliar 36cm. I set the softness between 3 and 4 and closed down the aperture a bit to F/5.6. The other is P&S wide open. :)

I just have engaged in, what might be the most challenging task of my photographic life..:o

I am teacher at a highschool here in Denmark, and untill about 1980, all the former headmasters was portraied for us to see. Then it for some reason stopped...

We have discussed this from time to time - and time runs, so now I decided to try and make portraits of the headmaster and his wife, from the tim ewhen I was student here...
Very intimidating actually.. If successfull, these portraits are ment to be the "official" portraits for all in the future to see.....

I have chosen bromoil printing as a base here, as I wanted the images to be seen as a hybrid between photography and "Art"... (yes! : here in DK, photography isn't art!!)
I also wanted the pictures to look schetchy - almost unfinished, and here, liquid emulsion is a great help.

first I photographer the couple: that was the easy part!
Then I applied liquid emulsionon a rather big paper (50x105cm or approx 20x 41") - marking the forms of the couple first, so I could put on the liquid emulsion whew I wanted...
Then developing (difficult, as my trays are not nearly big enough...) - and then the bleaching (even harder...).

I have now put on two layers of paint on the pictures - first warm brown - then some more black, to highten the contrasts..
Not sure I liked the result, I then added some strong coffee... to give warmth to the pictures...

Almost there - my question now is, whether I like the almost white background.... Or if I should do something to it ?

I consider three options (if any):
1:oilpaint (not as bromoil, bit as a "real" oilpaint)
2:Coffee... to make the background more dark and warm...
3: cigarette ashes... (can give a beautiful greyish tone!....

I am sorry to bother you, but I thought I'd give you a chance to see the "almost finished" portraits before I (maybe) destroy them.....

(In any case, this is a "secret" - the school doesn't know about it, so I can just throw it all away if not satisfied....)

Those are AMAZING portraits. I'm not familiar with those "alternatives" processes you used, but i wish i was. The rendering is sktechy, full of energy, vibrant, and put the focus on the character of your portrait.
I couldn't give any advice concerning the rendering, but i definitely love it as it is

I suspect they'll be gladly accepted, and then either they will have trouble getting something better from the next round of headmasters needing photos, or you'll be official portrait photographer for life.

Since you have some insider knowledge, keeping in mind the space they will be hung might factor into consideration your suggested changes. Some alterations might be better or worse for the room they occupy or the frame they are likely to have.

I wouldn't over-do it without something clear in mind for an end result. Since you're waffling between oil paint, ash, and coffee, it might be a good time to stop and call it good enough.

Gandolfi (Emil?), are there any archival considerations for these prints? I ask because as soon as I read that you had run them through coffee, my heart leapt into my throat!

But otherwise, these are amazing! I think you have very successfully merged the "Photography" and "Art" aspects. They really are spectacular. If I ever come to Denmark, I'll want you to make a portrait like that of myself!

You're welcome - just come on over...

As Ash states, the images last as long as any "real" painting - the coffee too...

(I once heard that Kodak actually recomended coffee as toning/vintage look... so I am not worried..)

Emil,
I always enjoy seeing your work on here. This is no exception. The headmaster photo can be frustrating because you have so many options. I recommend you find a nice clean box to store these in and set them aside. Make more. Try different "versions" of the same photos, then bring out the originals and compare against your other options. Like you said, this will be what is hung out for all to see. I'm sure whatever you create will be admired by most (you can't please everyone!). Comparing against other techniques, as well as considering the viewing environment may help you find the one that you think will be most appropriate fit for the spirit of the school, as well as the headmater and his wife.

Comparing against other techniques, as well as considering the viewing environment may help you find the one that you think will be most appropriate fit for the spirit of the school, as well as the headmater and his wife.

Kip, I think that you and the young man from Bulgaria, Nikola Dulgiarov, are doing the most interesting work in this thread. Like your photograph of a woman on stilts, this is refreshing and alive. It is so nice to see people using large format to do work that doesn't look like it was ossified in amber.

This was my first family portrait. Carl Meyer 12" Apo-Process on 320TXP shot at 1250. Developed in xtol, then contact printed on Ilford Glossy FB. As I do more of this lens/format combination I'm beginning to like it a lot.

I can't help but look. There's so many.
This portrait easily holds my attention, or at least keeps me looking at all the detail. I probably spent more time back and forth on all the qualities of the photo, as well as shapes and lighting of the jewelry in this one image than any other this month.

I like this one better than the photo of the tuba player. It separates a little better from the background, but it still looks rather impromptu and alive.

Have you tried darkening and or further blurring the white region above the gentleman's shoulder? If you cover it with a finger tip, the musician appears to pop out of the image: things become quite 3-dimensional.

Another thing you might want to explore is revealing more about the cool clothing. See this image (http://www.kenleegallery.com/images/forum/CheeseBuyerStrand.jpg) for an example of a typical Paul Strand portrait, where the textures and tones of the subject's clothing, are part of the charm. It's more posed of course - and thus a bit more contrived - but pose still seems rather natural, and the choice background enhances the foreground.

I love shooting wetplate, because after shooting film for a month, wetplate is fast, easy, fun. Time from getting out my chemicals, mixing a batch of collodion, setting up my darkroom, pouring and shooting a plate - less than 1 hour. This is the quarterplate, still wet in the rinse, an hour after thinking, "I should shoot some wetplate." There are some things wetplate isn't good for, and I'm loving LF film, but I don't love the 3 day process of shooting, developing, printing before I can see what I shot.

It isn't the shoes.

It's that, against the background, he looks like a cut-out character.

As a photograph, i think that it might work as part of a series, but not as a stand-alone.

I think that it is weaker than what you have uploaded here, and maybe a throw-away.

???? 3 days?

i shoot the film. unload it. develop it for 9 min. dry it and then either scan it or print it in the DR. could have it all done in less than a few hours (at most)....

No, but your NY lip is a lot faster!

I exaggerate for effect. But when I shoot film if it involved a hike like the other day, I'm too tired to develop when I get home. Develop the next day, hang the negatives to dry. Too tired to switch chemicals and print. Then the next day I contact print. I guess we get tired faster in AZ!

Harrumph - "Critiques should only be offered if requested by the original poster." From the top of this forum. I don't recall the poster asking.

Personally I like it. He looks a bit like a man out of time. The shoes are the one element that isn't, but really stand out from the rest of his clothes. It makes him even more of an anachronism.

Maybe you should read the whole exchange, including the comments that I made on two other photographs that Kip Praslowicz contributed to this thread, and his responses, before you launch into harrumphing/telling other people what they can and can't say.

r.e.
26-Oct-2011, 22:10
I didn't say you couldn't. I personally thought it was rude. My opinion counts not at all so I'm sure you won't let it bother you.

I think that you wrote that without having read the discussion about all three photographs and that this is a classic example of taking comments out of context. Furthermore, if you think that your opinion doesn't count for anything, what is the point in giving it, let alone upbraiding others for expressing theirs, especially when the person that you are upbraiding has been rather specific in admiring the work of the photographer that you have decided to "defend"? Meanwhile, I think that Mr. Praslowicz knows exactly what he is doing and that he doesn't need you running interference for him.

Here's the bottom line. You took my comments out of context and you had no idea what you were talking about.

I think, whether or not you deliberately channeled Irving Penn, that your focal length is great, just perfect, and refreshingly different.

My friend Milt offered to bore out a lensboard for me to fit a Compur #2 shutter for my new-to-me Schneider Xenar 180/4.5 (c. 1960). We also tapped the holes for the flange (inexpertly, but good enough). In exchange, I offered a portrait session for Milt and his wife Mary which we did this past Sunday. I ended up only using the Xenar 180/4.5 for all the shots. Here are the 3 that I like the best:

I could do more to reduce the hot spot on the side of Milt's head.

ok, ok almost done. Another (I think better) picture of my sousaphone friend:

That's all for a while...feels like outdoor portrait time is meeting its end in ol' Boston.

Paul,
I like all the photos of dudes with their brass; good stuff.
Did you lug your 45G around for those?

Thanks Ari...no they are 5x7s, I did them with my Kodak No. 33, which is a lot more portable! I always wonder though if it needs a little tune up, the 4x5 pictures I've taken with the Toyo are usually a lot sharper. I just love working with the 5x7, the ground glass looks amazing.

This is part of a new project I'm working on focusing on Orange County, CA. Here's something we don't see too often these days with TV, the internet, games, etc... Children seldom play outside as they did in previous generations. I saw these kids hanging outside with their Mother and I had to make this picture. I introduced myself to her and asked if I could take a picture. She didn't mind if I photographed her children and her house, but she didn't want to be in the picture herself so she quickly retreated. After I set up the camera, I spent about 15 minutes pretending to be looking for something in order to get the kids to forget that there's this huge camera pointed at them. They soon ignored my presence and I was awarded with this scene.

I really like this.

I see it as a sort of post-modern Norman Rockwell. The kids almost look as if they were posed. There is an honesty to this photo that seems to show a slice of the American Condition without a heavy value judgement added. Nice work

Wonderful! It somehow reminds me of Paul Strand's The Family, Luzzara, Italy, but totally fresh and new. I agree, such a single work cries out to be the start of a series.

I agree. It has a certain timeless quality to it that appeals to me very much. Aside from the plastic tricycle and, to a lesser extent, the more modern design bicycle, this could have been a photo of my childhood.

They don't play outside now? I mean, I hear that they don't as much but haven't been paying attention - you mean, not at all? When I have a family, mine will.

Ken, that was nice! Pitty it is gone, your ps work that is :)
And it made me realize how brilliant and timeless the original (in color) is...

Isn't it what it is all about, to show that we are not different from people 100 years ago, or 100 years from now?

Besides, it's a monthly thread, so interesting posts like yours made December interesting.

[control] Z still possible?

Not sure why my reply was deemed off topic/disrespectful and removed.

So I will try to explain myself.....

The Santa Ana, CA image by dperez is excellent.

The reply with the cut & paste job by Ken Lee was not only damn funny, it really made me realize how timeless the photo was that dperez posted.

Eh, you might have found it disrespectful to the creator of the original (though I don't think he minded) or to the work of Strand but just to be clear, I certainly meant no disrespect to the person asking about them, nor to you. (Sort of looks that way with the "reason for deletion.")

Ken Lee

It was my posts that were possibly offensive - and to remove them, I had to remove people's replies too. The "reason for deletion" got assigned to all of them. Sorry.

Better to be respectful whenever possible, and not be a "thread hijacker".

Roger,

You know, I shouldn't have wrote it the way I did, it was an over-generalization. I just don't see young people hanging outside in their front lawns or around the house as much as I recall in my youth. (Heck, we used to build forts and stuff in the front and back yards). I think part of of it is due to what I mentioned; TV, internet, etc. But also, it seems to me that a lot of kids are very busy nowadays... They often have to juggle multiple schedules; after-school programs, sports practices, music lessons, etc.

I wasn't trying to come off as saying kids of such and such generation had it better or worse off, it was more of an observation. This neighborhood is very different than most I am familiar with in Orange County in that people tend to spend a lot of time in and around their yards; to some extent they live part of their lives out in the open.

Thanks again,

-Daniel

No, I did not stage this shot. I was driving through the neighborhood and I noticed the family out on their porch. I recognized an opportunity. I asked for permission, and after focusing the camera I realized that the kids were very attentive to what I was doing, so I just waited them out by pretending to be looking for some gear. Once they got bored of watching me I started making pictures. I made four exposures and one instant print, which I gave to the family.

So this was staged then? I am a bit confused...

Finally printed these mid-October. Originally tried as salt prints, but this set is of platinum/palladium prints.

8x10, taken with x-ray film, processed at the hospital. Recently printed, but taken about 8 or so years ago.

These are cool. So being that you recently processed them, did you show them to the kids who I guess are around 18-19 years old now?

Thanks! The boys are 14 years old (freshman in high school) -- and yes, they have lived with the images for awhile. I made silver gelatin contact prints not too long after the film was processed, and I have been looking at them with the boys. It just took ten years to print a full set in the same process.

The prints are framed up and delivered for a group show going up the walls soon.
