Check the settings. I don't think PS takes 48-bit color or 16 bit monochrome.
That's where I'd start.

Could it be something in PS that's not right?

My experience with anything Adobe would indicate that a reboot tends to have about a 60% chance of fixing any problems that pop up. By that, I mean when something that normally works stops working.

All of the sudden I'm having problems with my Epson 3800 printer and my Epson V700 scanner. It's quite frustrating especially when you are not that saavy in the new digital world.

With my V700 PS won't take it in 64 bit mode, so I run a 32 bit version for the scanner. I heard somewhere that the latest version of the software is compatible with 64 bit PS.
Also PS will take anything the V700 can send.

With the 4990 I just save the scanned image to a file and open the file in Photoshop.

I normally do the same thing with the Silverfast program that came with my scanner. I've found it to be easier to separate the functions. It also allows me to work on one picture while the scanner is working on the other.
