I'll be driving up from the south, up the 5 and the 99. The directions here

http://www.sequoia-kingscanyon.com/directions.html

say to go all the way up to Fresno, then east on the 180. But it looks like taking the 63 to the 180 would save about 50 miles. Is the 63 a real slow road?

The drive through Fresno to the 180 up to Grant Grove is a nice drive and very easy. Can't comment on the alternate.

lot's of small towns speed zones, stop signs, stop lights and slow farm traffic. Not many passing lanes.

It's not a bad drive, but not a time saver.

99 To 180 will save you time. It looks longer on the map but its quite a bit faster to drive. 180 is an honest to gosh freeway all the way to Sanger the last time I looked! BTW,there is a fine little fruit stand just East of Centerville.

David, Robert, John,

I'll go up to Fresno and turn right. Thanks for helping me on this. (And I will definitely stop at the fruitstand east of Centerville - gotta get something to feed the bears.)

We will be driving up there tomorrow! The wife and the kids can't wait to go, most of the camping stuff is packed, and I have today to get my camera junk ready to go. I am really looking forward to this trip.

If you drive clear to Fresno you will have overshot your turnoff by quite a ways. I'd
probably exit Hwy 99 at Kingsburg.

Exit 99 @ Visalia, rt. 63 no. to 180. The farmers along 63 are, for the most part, in a hurry to get somewhere. I'd travel on "work" days, too. Everybody goes to the mountains on weekends.
