Went to the Wilsall Rodeo last weekend. But instead of taking the Nikon, I decided to bring the large format camera. I think I managed about 16 photos. Of course if you were there on Saturday, the whole thing was only about an hour and a half long. Still working on developing the film but here is one that is done. Used the Horseman 4x5, Fuji 450mm lens, Ilford HP5+ rated at ISO 1600. Lens wide open (f12) at about 1/125 th second. I hope to have a couple of more photos ready later tonight.

Fantastic, Ken.

Is it rain what I see falling far behind?

A 450/12 for action, that's sick. Congrats on getting a good shot!

But not enough to make me give up the nikons for action...

I imagine he focused on the barrel and waited for the rider to come into position, rather than trying to pan and track ;-)

Frank's got it. The rider has to come around the barrel. That's the drill in barrel racing. With a 4x5 it's a huge challenge. Great shot! Waiting until she's around the barrel means the riders speed is at its lowest, otherwise there's no way that 1/125 sec would get you a sharp image. I used to use a RB67 w/ a 250 for those shots....and same thing...wait until the film was processed to see what worked. I'll have to

I used to run a champian barrel horse when I was 12 years old ( 16 sec) we never called them rodeo's here, just horse shows...

Here are a few more photos. Yep, pre-focused on a spot and hoped they got close. Easier with the barrel racers. The horse and bull riders was more luck than anything I think. Seems to have turned out OK.

Darr asked about the challenges...Shutter speed was my biggest concern. That's why I went with 1600 on the HP5. It was sunny when I was setting up and then some clouds and yes a little rain. The bull rider was my last shot and you can see the sun had come out again. Also I was worried about framing. I even went and concocted a wire framing device. Couldn't use it though, the fence rail I was sitting behind was in my way. The 450mm looks like it worked good on the barrel racers but looks a little short for the horse an bull riders.

I also had a bunch of little kids ask about my camera. A couple of them had a look under the dark cloth and thought it was cool.

Anyway it was fun, would do it again.

Hmm. I shoot the web and press release shots for our local county fair and rodeo every fall. Looks like I might have to schedule a little personal project time during some of the day events. The mule pulling events might be interesting. Pre-frame and focus with a long release so I can still get the action shots I need with SLR's. Something to ponder.

Ditto on the very nice third one with the horse rounding the barrel. It's like a wilder version of the famous Eisenstaedt photo with an ice skating waiter and a chair.

Thanks everyone, I had a lot of fun shooting this. I didn't catch it at first but it looks like the horse is actually smiling in that 3rd photo.

Very nice Ken. Thanks for posting. I was just thinking the other day how did those guys in the old days shoot football with a 4x5. Looks like you could have done it just fine.
