What qualifies as a still life? Is Weston's image of a dead bird a still life?
You my think I am jesting, but i am serious.

I believe one of the qualifications is that the subjects are arranged by the photographer.

And the scene is usually indoors, neither landscape nor portraiture.
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_life) (emphasis mine):
"A still life (plural still lifes) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on). With origins in the Middle Ages and Ancient Greek/Roman art, still life paintings give the artist more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture. Still life paintings, particularly before 1700, often contained religious and allegorical symbolism relating to the objects depicted."

Don't believe all you read on Wikipedia. Anyone can make incorrect statements there. A photographer can make an arrangement outdoors as easily as indoors, and can even control the lighting if they know what they are doing.

I think it became a monthly thread (like the portrait threads) when the open-ended "Post Your Still Lifes, Take 2" thread hit 778 replies. If you think the thread should last longer, perhaps a "Still Lifes, 2011" for a year at a time?
I'm good with whatever...
Good enough. I changed the title.
If you adjust your settings to show the newest posts first, you don't have to navigate through countless pages to reach the end: the software brings you there immediately.

Scanned from print with Epson 4870
Harman Direct Positive FB Paper, preflashed, ISO 1.6, 4 second exposure indirect north light, 150mm binocular lens on Speed Graphic, about F/10. This lens has nice bokeh and funky off-axis aberrations. The results from some testing done today. To tame the high contrast I'm shooting this paper under indirect north daylight, rated at about ISO 1.6, with a slight preflash to improve shadow detail. I also found out that important to achieving rich black shadows is fresh, new paper developer.
Straight scan, white and black points set on scanner, no additional image manipulation except resize for posting to Internet.
My way of thinking about this paper is that it's very similar to wet plate collodion, in terms of speed and lighting.
~Joe
PS: You can see along the right side of the bottom edge of the paper a bit of shininess from the scanner. This fiber based paper has that nice Ilford glossy shine, the shadows are very rich and deep, provided you use fresh developer (I used Ilford PQ liquid concentrate, newly purchased). These one-of-a-kind paper images have the potential of being very nice when matted and framed.
BTW, the background along the edge of the scan is white printer paper behind the Harman positive, included as a reference.

Harman Direct Positive Paper, same setup as above, about the same exposure (3.5 seconds). I gave this one a bit less preflash, hence the shadows are a bit too dense. Olivetti Lettera 22 manual portable typewriter, olive green in color. Indirect north light.

Harman Direct Positive Paper. A very impromptu still life, salt and pepper shakers on the dining room table, indirect north light through sliding glass door behind camera, 30 second exposure. Same setup as previous. Included are dust and fibers on the paper, and a tong mark in upper right corner. Must see about replacing my almost 20 year-old paper tongs.
BTW, I metered the scene using a Gossen Luna Pro F set to ISO 1.6, referenced the exposure time for the lens F-stop (around F/11.5 with bellows factored in), no additional compensation. Just ensure there's no artificial lighting to confuse the meter; the paper isn't sensitive to incandescent lights, only UV/blue.

Lucian, That teapot is looking good. The lens is short enough to to get some tangible perspective.
Steve mentions a seamless white background - something I've been fighting against for a couple of decades. Here's why: Seamless white backgrounds were a magazine kludge. They were used to make it easy to cut out (knock out) the subject for a printed page before computers came along. Seamless grey backgrounds have been used traditionally to 'formalise' a full-length portrait done with a medium format camera that cannot reproduce the shallow DOF of a large format camera. For still-life, a horizon makes it easier for the reader to locate his own position in space with regard to the subject. A horizon also makes it easier to adjust the tones beyond the subject so that they contrast and set-off the edges.
Serge, That's another blast from the past - totally different and less mature style compared the glass jars. I've been flipping through Fox-Talbot to find it's ancestor.

Dupont, Double bed sheets on a stretcher for the large ones and artists canvas for the small ones. See her (https://picasaweb.google.com/cjbroadbent/Backgrounds?authuser=0&feat=directlink)e. Paint is roll-on white wall-paint with additives, misted over, while still wet, with weak solution of white sprayed gently from above.
Rosco canvas and paint is the expensive way to go. Rosco is flexible and can roll up.
I don't use Rosco.

Thanks Serge and Zaitz. It was for Brides Magazine so the blown-out haloes were ok. Anyone who has done silverware knows that the text-book solutions are crap. Note the ring-light fill smack in the middle. A standard problem with a tabletop page is how to fill the empty space above and below all the products. My remedy is to stack product stuff upwards and hang decorative stuff downwards.

"Ken, can you tell us what your lighting technique was on that shot?"
I shoot in my living room, next to a window. There's a white cloth behind the subject - or a black one - far enough away to be out of focus.
The key to lighting in this case, was rotating the blades to an angle where the reflection on the brass blades was attractive, but not excessive.

Ari, are you able to tell us how you set this shot up?
Ari, are you able to tell us how you set this shot up?
Sure, Tom.
The camera was almost level, and the mushroom, resting on some dark fabric, was propped up by a book under the cloth.
The standards were adjusted to be parallel to the mushroom.
The whole set-up was done on my kitchen table using daylight from a nearby window.
Exposure was 3-4 seconds at f8 on a 90mm lens, racked out to about 200mm or so.
The top 1cm of the photo is cropped.
Thanks

So Ari, the mushroom was vertical?
Was it resting ON the fabric, or a was it a bit in front/above it?
Thanks for that information. I want to do the same with a pine cone I found :)

Tom,
The mushroom was nearly vertical, resting on the fabric (propped up by a book underneath the fabric).
I hope that helps.

I'd like to know if you're hand-colouring with Marshall oils, because they usually have a different look.
Your hand-colouring is very vibrant but delicate, whereas Marshalls gave a more pastel look.

I shot this once before (on 4x5, with another Petzval (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showpost.php?p=759600&postcount=165)), but wasn't happy with the harsh rendering and bokeh. Reshot today on 10x12 FP4+, using the Darlot 10" f/4 Petzval. Much more pleased with this one.

I set up my camera the other day in my backyard and called my daughter to sit for me. She would not, saying that she was ugly because she had a pimple on her face.
"But I am going to use a lens that will not even show that pimple!"
She did not believe it and would not sit on that chair.
"Are you mad at me, Dad?" she asked me a little later, sensing my bad mood.
"No." I said, but not happily.
I had to shoot something. So I went to her room and took that hat from her cloth stand. Then I went the garage to find someone to put the hat on.
