What's so special about this, Ken, is the trust in the viewer. By showing less, we are forced to imagine more. The door being ajar, give the idea of movement and happenings within.

Thanks - It's always rewarding to hear the impressions of others. I just saw the scene and liked the look. These things are largely subconscious I guess - but I see it when you point it out.

Thanks Mike. It's good on occasion to come across a place that hasn't been altered. Seems to have been quit shortly after the being wired for electric lighting. Gave me a good idea of what our place must have been like before all the various `improvements' to keep it habitable ;)

Love this, Randy. Was in SW Virginia a few years ago for a wedding and was enthralled by all the old abandoned buildings. This was before I started LF. I took a lot of digital images that I liked at the time--not so much now. Very nice.

Hard to see here, but even Merritt's lock is custom, with a big 'M' on it! If you're looking for elaborate tombs in the Bay Area, Oakland's Mountain View cemetery is tough to beat.

Good thread idea Ken. I have a few door pictures, some of which pose the old question "Green door, what's that secret you're keeping?".

The first is a triple doorway at the ruined Tintern Abbey in Monmouthshire.
The second is one of the barn doors at the medieval Bredon Barn in Gloucestershire.
The third is the door to the anglo-saxon church at Deerhurst in Gloucestershire.

It's mysterious and well-crafted, but may not have an equivalent degree of sheer beauty or whatever makes a third leg of the "tripod". If there were a story connected to it - if it were a documentary image - then it would be brilliant. As a standalone image (in my humble opinion) it needs something to complete it, to compliment the mystery dimension.

Here's a variation. I'll remove it if you like, since it is more than a mere comment. I've exaggerated certain elements, and diminished others.

http://www.kenleegallery.com/images/forum/FollyHallway.jpg

Your photo reminds me of a door photograph that has always impressed me, by Paul Strand. Among its many admirable qualities, is a "spiral" carved out by the alternating layers of architecture.

Hi Ken,
Thank you for your comments, with which I heartily agree. I only had a couple of lenses with me that day, and my time was also limited. My intent was in part documentary, to show as much of the architecture as possible, as well as artistic, and the compromise I came up with leans too much toward the documentary side.

I love the Strand photo, of course, and I will have that in mind should I be able to get back into the building. I think a longer lens will be better, leaving out the skylight, which will still show the planes created in the ceiling. But the distant door and outer door/window will be more dramatically central to the image. I will certainly post the resulting image, if I can get back in there soon. Thank you again for your thoughtful analysis!
Dave

Hi Ken

I am happy the way the image appears here.

When I preview the post it appears to be enormous.

In preview the image filled my screen - in the actual post it looks a different size. I guess if I stay with the settings that I used it should be constant - fingers crossed.

Thanks

Advice appreciated and needed.

The lines are not straight. Either the camera wasn't level, or it wasn't perpendicular to the building, or the building itself is off a bit. If you view the image with a grid superimposed, this will become evident.

Also, the tones can be adjusted to be deeper, and bring out the rich textures you got by shooting when the sun was low in the sky. I'd say it's off by 1 zone.

The "sunny 16 rule" says that under bright sun, we shoot at the ISO of the film, at f/16.

If you shoot Acros at 100, then the exposure would be 1/125 at f/16, or 1/60 at f/22, or 1/30 at f/32, or 1/15 at f/64. You shot at 1/15 at f/27, which is between 22 and 32, so it's around 1.5 stops over. (Of course, later in the day the light gets weaker, and your exposure may have been off by less).

If you wanted greater detail in the shadows, that one stop extra exposure would help - but then you would want to develop less, or adjust the contrast downward, to keep the high values in place. That would be N-1 development in darkroom terms.

It's easy to adjust the contrast curve in Photoshop, to bring down the upper part of the scale. In this version, the bricks feel like bricks, the wood feels like wood, and the brass feels like... brass :)

Ken,
Yes, I did overexpose. Bought a small level today to assist with levelling. Following your advice and example with curves, I played around with exposure, curves and white-point and got a much better image. In fact the small white notice on the door could then be read (at 100%) whereas it could not in my first version. This type of advice is what makes the Forum so valuable to beginners. Many thanks.
Cheers, Tony

One of my ex's friends from New York, after just graduating from college, was visiting Los Angeles and went on a date. That type 55 has character.....

I agree. I was really lucky with that shot. The "goop vignetting" was just about perfect and the texture seemed to go with the image. Other sheets from that pack have not pulled as well through the rollers.

I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph the inside of this historic theater for an afternoon. In my haste (and, admittedly, I was a bit rusty) I neglected to use proper movements to keep the perspective under control, hence the slight convergence in the wide angle shots. Live and learn!

This is one of my first 8X10 images. It is a casual portrait of my son about seven years ago. Since it was taken in a doorway, I thought I would post it here. I'm pretty sure it was made with a 240 lens. As far as the film, either FP4 or Polaroid 804. The camera was a Toyo 810M that I wish I still had. I was really into Sally Mann. I think she is one of best.

Thank you. Using old Polaroid materials is both rewarding, as in this case, and nerve wracking since you never know just how much coverage you're going to get from the partially dried up chemical pods. On this shoot of the theater I shot T-Max 400 for all the "official" shots and then used the expired Polaroid stuff for my personal work. I would post more from this series but there are no more doorways in the set!

The theater was built in the 1920s and while it maintains some of its former glory the photos I have seen of its heyday are amazing.

EDIT: John Conway: very pleasing shot. Sally Mann-ish, too. Have you seen Deborah Parkin's work? She's done a great series on Fuji instant film (and recently wet plate collodion) of her young children.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for the compliment. I dig that polaroid image. I was a big Polaroid fan and when it went away I stopped doing large format. I had the whole 8x10 system as well. My return to large format is exciting. The Fuji has my attention but I have not been able to find much info about it. Thanks for the Deborah Parkins reference. I will check it out.

John,

The image is well deserving of praise (as are most others on this thread, but we can't say something about each one, can we?) I love Polaroid materials, too, and am tenaciously holding on to my dwindling 4x5 reserves. I still shoot with it, albeit sparingly. I'm bummed to have missed the opportunity to shoot 8x10 Polaroid, but I'm happy enough with my 4x5 stuff. Old Polaroid film goes for WAY too much on the auction site these days. Not sure why, but come on!

Cheers.

Yeah, the prices are out of control. I actually still have some 8x10 Polaroid( 804 or 803) and maybe the holder, but the machine is long gone. I always used the hand crank, never plugged it in.It was so nice, and a great way to learn 8X10. If I remember correctly, the 8x10 was about 120.00 a box at B&H. At the time I thought it was a lot, but now it would be a dream come true. I guess the Fuji is it now. Just seems so limited. I wish one of the other film companies would take interest in a Polaroid type film line. One of the many great companies that make traditional film that are sold through Freestyle perhaps. I am just about done setting up my equipment and must decide what film I will use.

Jonathan

It was about a 45 second exposure, and I was praying the whole time that no one would pop out of there. It was surprisingly busy that morning. Actually, it took me a long time to set up and get everything square (don't look too hard-it's still slightly tweaked) and I kept startling people as the doors slid open. I guess when you get off an elevator, the last thing you expect to find is a big view camera staring you in the face. :)

21-Aug-2012, 13:32
Thanks Ken, Ramiro. Yes, it was a very long exposure, something like four minutes (!) if I remember right. I thought the blades on the windmill in the background would turn into a solid white disc, but you can hardly see anything at all. Thinking about it now, I imagine this is because they were turning very slowly and so more sky shone through. I would like to go back and explore this area again-it was over 100 degrees when I went (and sheer torture under the darkcloth), so I didn't stick around too long.

Ramiro Elena

I like the puff of white as it is. Less cliché, more misterious. Makes you wonder how and doesn't draw too much attention. I also like how you usually expose the whites, you always get a nice range.

Both are very cool, but the oldy Tri-X came out very interstingly.

Thanks. This was my first time trying the Tri-X, I really didn't know what to expect. I got the box with my Speed, complete with 6 absolutely destroyed wooden film holders, a primitive electronic flash, and a cute typewritten list of 9 shots to take during a wedding. I opened the box in the darkroom, realized the sheets were all stuck together, and threw it on a shelf because I didn't think I would be able to shoot it. Reading here, I realized I might just have a treasure in that box, so I carefully pried the sheets apart one-by-one and loaded them up, and took a wild guess at exposure. I think I might have to de-rate it a little more, and use a more contrasty lens next time. But I like it, and it was a lot of fun to try.

It is at the door of the Perigord - better known for its truffes - by the river Dordogne. There are several bastide or fortified villages and smaller fortified manors. This was by one of them with smaller houses or rooms attached to the walls. The doors were a little bit atypical and this grabbed my attention.

Small World...we plan to be there again next year. Likely a night in one of the nice hotel in Falset and visit to Montblanc and surroundings.

Cheers,

I like the symmetry and elevated POV. The photo does what the building does: it dwarfs the human element.

If you hadn't mentioned the ladder I would have assumed your camera was capable of a monstrous amount of front rise!

Being up such a high ladder was a bit scary. Even being that high, I didn't quite have enough rise. Camera was a Canham 8x10 light weight. I used a friend's 110XL...

This first image is a door way in Bonito Pueblo at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. I made the image with a Nikon 90mm lens on my Linhof 4x5. This is a very short doorway - the top of the doorway is about 4 feet above the dirt floor. This section of the 3 story pueblo has no ceilings. I made my images at Chaco Canyon in late October to take advantage of the low sun angles and sun azimuth to capture direct sunlight passing through upper windows that aligned through the doorways.http://lenbruffett.com/LFforum/Bonito Pueblo Doors - Chaco Canyon.jpg

This a "Keyhole doorway at Bonito Pueblo - again it is another very short doorway.
http://lenbruffett.com/LFforum/Pueblo Benito - Key Hole Door.jpg

This door is at Taos Pueblo - it is an active Navajo residence (notice a freshly washed soup ladle drying on the fence post on the left side of the building). The Taos pueblo holds the world record for the longest human inhabited buildings in the world - (1000 + years). The image was made shooting into the early morning sun with my Rodenstock / Linhof Select 150mm lens.

Yes, just a bit of front swing to set the plane of focus parallel to the faces of the buildings.

I avoided rear swing to avoid distorting/exaggerating the convergent lines.

Replying without an image of such, although I have many. I have wondered for decades why
images of doors fascinated me, I post one possible psychological possibility here (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-walking-through-doorway-makes-you-forget/).

It matters not why we do what we do, really, but for the curious ...

Windows offer similar effects. One which transposed the composition against the American flag in the Sixties Days of Rage in Chicago....
