epson 3550 repairs

My son retrieved an Epson 1640-XL scanner that Florentine Films was going to dump in the trash. A freebie. He wants to scan 8x10 negs and play.

Problem is, it doesn't work. How should I go about finding out who/where/how/how much for repairs?

Contact Epson directly? I know their customer service kind of sucks though. E.P.Levine in Boston also does a lot of repairs and are quite reputable. I would also check all the drivers, and possible downloads you could possible find on the web. It's also broken which is probably an indication of why they were going to throw it out.

Yup, broken, so therefore tossed. We're just hoping we can get it fixed cheaply and he can use it as a "toy."
