Google and searches here came up with nothing regarding pros & cons of this stuff, mostly links to stores that sell ink refills. I don't own an inkjet. The oem ink prices for these things are outrageous. When I do purchase a printer, I'd consider Conecolor inks but I'd like to know more first.

I've have the sample prints, and they look good, and they don't cost much. Why don't you send for your own set? I haven't gone with them, yet anyway, since I have a full bw inkset in that printer.

You might try searching over on the Luminous Landscape "Printers, Papers and Inks" forum:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?board=6.0

Cone (and other 3rd party) inks come up in discussion fairly frequently there.

Peter, I've ordered the samples but that won't tell me about the ink in use, problems, etc.
Bob, I searched that forum and again, no actual users chimed in. The conversation always goes towards the b+w inks. Maybe I'll post there as well.

I personally find the LL list less than reliable, I'd ask here-

I think there are some experienced users there.

I have used epson printers for years. Yes they are expensive, but very good quality. I am considering going to Cone inks. In conversation with him online, he claims they are directly compatible with the OEM epsom 4800 inks. I would not have to change any of my color profiles. I pay $89 for Epson 220 ml cart and the cone carts are $55 for 220ml I spend about 4 thousand a year on ink, so i am looking forward to some considerable savings. I will be ordering this week 4 220ml carts for my 4800 printer. He claims that i can use cone and epson at the same time... we will see. and get back to everybody.

For prints that are family treasures or to be sold, permanence is important. I rely on http://www.wilhelm-research.com/ for information on this subject. There seems to be no recent tests of this product. Users may have a subjective opinion on the permanence of Cone ink, but a rigorous test that can be compared to Wilhelm's tests of OEM ink with OEM and some other media would be more reassuring. For this reason I usually use OEM inks and media. This costs little more in relation to the value of a mounted, matted, and perhaps framed print than using the cheapest products.

Wilhelm? Feh. Wilhelm works for the manufacturers.

If you want factual information on the subject, join Aardenburg Imaging and Archives (AaI&A) (http://www.aardenburg-imaging.com/). Aardenburg works for us. Big difference. Big.

AaI&A testing is far more intensive and informative when it comes to inkjet. Anyone who is interested in longevity of prints, especially anyone who is selling such prints, owes it to themselves to join AaI&A and to contribute to the research. Just sayin'.

Mike,

If I've read the fine print properly I think you have to swap ALL of the carts a the same time for the profiles to work seamlessly. Perhaps that has changed. I don't fault your strategy, I'm considering doing the same thing.

As a follow up, has anyone had any long term experience with the ConeColor inks?

yes I have for the last 3 yrs , direct exchange for oem and you don't have to change all at once. great inks. I have had to quit using them due to my 4800 died.and I bought a P800 and there will be no cone inks for it . I have 2 sets of carts 1 set with a lot of ink in them and 1 set I used for cleaning and extra chips and some un opened ink to get rid of that I am going to post in the FS soon..

Wager 123, that is interesting. Why no Cone inks for the P800?

Anyone use the ConeColor inks with a lower end printer like an Epson 1430?

Jon Cone stated on his website that they were unable to get past the tech problems they encountered with the carts . seems that Epson changed some things to make it impossible for the use of 3rd party inks.
but they were able to get past them for the P600

Thanks. I guess that is not too surprising. Epson wants to sell the razor blades too!

Any test results for longevity, fading and the like yet?
