Just curious - what qualifies as ULF? I know it's a semantic issue, but I be curious...

One simple way of looking at it is that 8x10 isn't ULF. So ULF is anything larger than that, either by longest dimension (which would include, say, 7x11 and 5x12) or by image area (which would exclude 7x11 and 5x12).

The terminology has been confused in recent years by the Ilford annual special order program, which is often referred to as the "ULF" program even though it includes smaller sizes.

I thought it was anything larger than 10x8, by image area. I would have seen 5x12 as a panoramic format, which in itself is just an extra long shot of a smaller size (like 6x12 is medium format, just like 6x4.5)

I thought that ULF was the sound you make when setting up a camera bigger than 8x10.

More than 80 in. sq. of image area??

I would say 11x14 and larger would be ULF, leaving 10x12 as being in the gray area between RLF (Regular LF ;) ) and ULF. In the panoramic sizes I would say ULF starts at 7x17, with 5x12 being in the gray area. I guess 2.25x3.25 sheet film/plates would be TLF (Tiny LF) and 4x5 PSLF (Pretty Small LF) :D .

But these are rather arbitary distinctions.

I always thought it was greater than 8x10 (more than 80 sq in), so 5x12 would not be ULF but 10x12 would be.

I tend to look at it in the way that Jim and Richard do.

While the 80 square inch criteria is probably the best, my thought is that ULF is a size that no sane person would try to enlarge.

Funny this topic would come up. The day before this topic was posted, I had my 8x10 Deardorff out on a tripod checking out a new lens and I looked at it and thought of it as a medium format.

I agree with Oren. For me ULF is longer than ten inches in either dimension.

And perhaps the size of the person using the camera has something to do with it! Someone 5'2" and 110 pounds might consider 8x10 to be ultra large! ;)

Well, I'm 5'7" and 140 lbs. and still for me ULF is my 8x20, 11x14 and now 14x17 cameras.
