View Full Version : Fashion & LF
I was inspired to start this based on a thread I saw in the January portraits.
Anybody have a contribution?
I'll start with an excerpt from a project I did in 2007 in Paris, shot on a converted Polaroid and T-Max 400.

It maybe helpful to get technical with fashion shots. Three sources (euww). Getting some directional light out of gridded dish. A little ring-light mounted on the lens to get some darker edges and and umbrella for the background. 4x5 Ektachrome. Underexposed and pushed in E6.

Lovely as always, Christopher.
Creamy skin tones and great texture on the grays.
In the spirit of giving, here's another from the same series as the photo in the OP.
Same technical information as well, but I burned in the sides of the photo to help her stand out better.

Christoper,
you just don't use the light. You make the light sing to whatever tune you want played... I'd be happy if I understood just 10% of the mastery you have... ;)

Deep in the Canadian Forest I have discovered the freshest model to hit the scene in 20 years.. Her name is Tweedy and she reminds me so much of Barry Langavin's great find Twiggy.

About half my work is large-format, from 4x5 to 5x7 to 8x10
There is more http://frankpetronio.net/
None of these have been for real paying clients mind you... I am skeptical that anyone can really make a living from doing creative fashion photography outside of the largest cities or without a lot of backing.

Robert it's La Senza, an underwear retailer. In the UK they've become a "sexy yet affordable" brand. Although their sizes are quite broad they still don't cover the full range, so larger busts or waists do miss out from the basic "xs, s, m, l, xl" sizing. I think 28" and smaller / 36" and larger are both disadvantaged. It's been a while since I was underwear shopping with the other half so that's all I remember.

My favourite fashion photo thus far, perhaps even of all time!
Maybe we should have stopped after this? What more needs to be said? :)
But Tomas and Frank had more fine work to add to the subject.
So good stuff, everybody...keep it rolling!

What is really crazy , is that I actually am setting up runway shoots on this theme in a large pine forest. I actually want to send it to Vogue when I am far enough down the line. I have been collecting outfits and models to work with Tweedy and will post next fall when I have more.

Bob, keep us posted and post some pictures, of course.

Great image - I love it.
I'd love more details on the ring light.
I haven't seen too many set up examples of ring light and LF. You say its mounted on the lens?

.......... I am skeptical that anyone can really make a living from doing creative fashion photography outside of the largest cities or without a lot of backing.
A while back The Gazette ran a story on the break page of the business section on the marketing behind Le Chateau, a large Montreal clothing retailer.
The main picture was of the web designer shooting in the inhouse studio. She was huddled over a Rebel xti or some such camera.
That contract use to go to real photographer.
It seems a fotog now shoots only the billboard type shots and the rest is done by the very young and talented inhouse staff web designer. :(
