I'm trying to remember the name of a photographic artist. I believe he's based in Vancouver and he's kinda young, around 28-35 or so. I read about him in a FFWD magazine here in Calgary, Canada.

He constructs dramatic scenes with actors and lighting and stitches 30-100 large format film photographs together into one image. I remember a scene with a horse & carriage and a woman in an old fashioned dress walking through snow with the horse. He's fairly well known but I can't remember his name for the life of me.

Does anybody happen to know who I'm talking about?

You might be thinking of Jeff Wall. He's not young, but does huge display transparencies that are heavily produced.

You might also be thinking of Gregory Crewdson, whose work has the big cinematic production as well. (He's not a Vancouver guy though).

Nope, neither of them. I just fired off an e-mail to FFWD to see if they can tell me who it was and which magazine it was from from the description of the work I gave them.

I've met Scott, I should have mentioned him, but my recollection of his work is the series in the gardens. I haven't seen his more recent work. He's a very sharp guy.

Excellent work. I've been thinking along very similar lines.

Thoughts on how the "Sugar Shack" photo was made? I really like it. Maybe taken at just the right time of dusk - then burning in the trees etc to make it look more like night? Or do you think it was an HDR shot from a DSLR?

Nevermind, I found this regarding the photo:

"In this image Sugar Shack we see McFarland combine a digital composite from several negatives. The photograph was taken at night during the maple sugar season which is late March to early April. McFarland claims that “It is naturalistic in the sense that the image captures a real person making maple syrup. I was particularly drawn to the alchemical nature of the process, and its visual relationship to photography. For me the Sugar Shack is almost like a metaphor of the darkroom.”"
