Too bad the toolset isn't for the Mac:

I was going to try converting images to the new format to see how they looked and sized, but currently only for Linux, Windows coming soon, but no love for the Mac.

Oh boy. A faster 8 bit JPEG. What about the 16 bit JPEG?????????????

It's called JPEG2000. I convert all my 16-bit TIFF scans to JPEG2000 lossless after I scan in VueScan. The net result is files half the size of compressed TIFFs.
