Did it come with any whole plate holders? If so why not shoot whole plate. Film is not to hard to find, holders on the other hand are a little harder.

Whole plate film isn't the easiest to find, and whole plate holders are very expensive, whether used or new (from Chamonix or a few other manufacturers.) Also heard tales of some whole plate holders not fitting some camera backs, but I have no personal experience. But it's a cool size.

A back for 4x5 or 5x7 could be bought, if one could be found specifically for a 2D, or modified from another maker, or built from the ground up by someone like Richard Ritter. (Glennview and SK Grimes also come to mind as possibilities.)

Such a back would simply replace the removable whole plate back currently on your camera.

Simon,

Whole plate holders aren't standard sizes, so you'll need to check the width of holder you need. I have some extras but they are probably slightly too small for a 2D. As long as you want to shoot HP5+, film is easy to get. you can also get FP4+ by ordering in the Ilford Large format Cutting extravaganza once a year.

Or, you can sell the camera to me!

Cheers,
Richard

Hello gerbil62:

Whole Plate cameras are not that common anymore. More used 8x10 cameras are available, and 8x10 2-Ds are not that pricy. I would think that keeping the WP camera intact would be an act of stewardship or conservation. There is someone out there who wants this whole-plate for what it is. Find the right buyer for your camera and find an 8x10 2-D (or an Ansco . . .or a Burk & James) for you. Lets keep these remaining old cameras intact for future generations to enjoy. I have thought to get my 2-D converted for front swing and tilt, but chose not to do so for just this reason.

Cheers.

Simon,

My extra holders are 7 1/2" wide, 9" long to the rib, 10" to the top (not counting the dark slide handle). If the wooden part of the back around the area where the film is exposed is wide enough, you can often fit more narrow holders in there. you can either shim it or just be careful. I've done both before.

Don't know about Canadian sources, but both Midwest Photo Exchange in Columbus and The View Camera Store have HP5+ in stock, for around $78/25 sheets.
Cheers,
Richard

Simon, take a look at Steve's 8x10 to 11x14 expansion back. This is what you would need to do to shoot 8x10 on a 6 1/2 x 8 1/2:
