pretty good!

I did some pictures today.
first time in a loong while, and it was GREAT FUN!!

I have a student that has a beautiful/ interesting face. And she is classical trained flautist.

So I made a "portrait of a flautist" - my way...

Not only beautiful / interesting face but sure it's a stoper! Strong and yet retains very artistry. You're the BEST!

I've come to love these monthly portrait threads; eveybody doing the same thing, but so differently and so well. Portraiture must be the most worked in (and worked over) genre in photography, and it's somehow reassurring to know that there are still original and thoughtful portraits to be made... :)

Oh, and I just realized, I lied about the lens on mine. That one was done with the 99-cent, 9-inch focal length magnifying glass. We were switching lenses around a bit that day...

Damn! You made us all think it was done with a Velostimat when it was really done with a 99c lens! :D
I recently went out to the $2 store and got me a couple magnifing glasses. Still looking for a 75mm barrel to fit them (it). Did you use one or more glasses for yours? My glass is pretty green looking.

Yeah, I'm soooo ashamed of myself! :o

The $2 store? Gee, you're getting the expensive ones! Mine is just the single bi-convex lens with the handle cut off and glued over an appropriately-sized hole in a lensboard. And yes, it's got that coke-bottle green color, the sign of fine optical glass!

Thanks all. ajsikel, you've inspired me. Some great work here. Garrett, the Euryscop should not be overlooked for portraiture. The sharp-soft character really makes the subject grip the frame. I'm guilty of not using them enough.

gary, petzval

......but I had gotten my notes confused and didn't catch it until I finished a 2nd batch of portrait films today. Earlier I said this one was done with the Euryscop. I've replaced that portrait that was #8 on page 1 (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showpost.php?p=576012&postcount=8) with the proper photo that was actually done with the Euryscop. It's a lovely picture but totally different from this. I remember when I posted it thinking how much that Euryscop looked like a petzval. Should have listened to myself.

Anyways this portrait is done with a 12" Voigtlander Petzval at f4. Click on the hot link above to see the REAL Euryscop portrait. Sorry for the mix up.

How do I get the file to display in a larger size, without thumbnail?

If the file is stored somewhere on the internet (e.g., your website or in an ISP network folder) you can write the html image code for that address into your post and the picture will magically appear. Or, select the small yellow icon of the mountains in the formatting menu above the text entry box where you compose your message and the pop-out submenu will ask for the image's internet address and write the code automatically for you inserting the image in the message at the cursor point.

IOW, you don't add an attachment to your post, but rather reference the image storage location on the net.

Stephane, the classic Nicola Perscheid look! Nicola himself couldn't have gotten it nicer I think.

Thank you Jim! But the credit is all yours, by your years of experimenting the otherwise forgotten magic/distinct look of the classical lenses, and by unselfishly publishing the results on your site.
The effect with this lens is quite amazing: there is that other picture (view from my kitchen window) in the thread of city scapes that was shot wide open with that same lens. It gives a freaky 3D effect if you look at it closely.
Next lenses for me will be by some french makers (I am french and do not own any yet). I am looking for an eidoscope and an achromatic single meniscus covering 8x10 at infinity. When I go to France this summer, I will be looking actively.

Since I never photograph people (with rare exception), I've never participated in one of these 'portrait' threads. But I did make a portrait of sorts recently. This is an old terra cotta bust that I found in the Gladding McBean pottery company, in Lincoln, CA. GMcB produced a lot of architectural details for large city buildings and structures. Been around since 1875. Now they mostly make clay sewer and water pipe, and work on architectural restoration. But, a lot of old stuff is still laying around the factory. This statue probably was a second, or reject, and legend has it that is a likeness or Ray Crock.

You're uploading pictures as attachments. Those of us uploading larger images are just putting in IMG links to images hosted elsewhere online.

First shot for me with my B&J 8x10 field camera I bought here from ImSoNegative . Nothing too fancy for setup or subject. Just learning what to expect for depth of field, focusing, function, developing in trays, etc... Depth of field seems to be about 2-3" for this sort of work at f/16. Dark cloth is not optional for focusing. (It is option on my speed graphic with it's flip open hood)

Schneider symmar-s 300/5.6 at f16. Fomapan 100 in xtol 1+2. Scanned on epson v700. White lightning 10000 flash on my left with umbrella. indirect WL5000 on the right illuminating the room.

Scan is unbelievably sharp and detailed. The eyelashes and eyebrows have more detail than I've ever seen, and I didn't even scan in at a high res compared to 4x5in or 6x6cm which I usually deal with for B&W.

Dust is a problem here. I'm going to have to clean everything real good before I make more photos. I don't know if it's from the film holders, camera, darkroom, etc.. I usually use a combiplan tank for 4x5 and paterson tank for 120/35mm. Perhaps my trays I used for 8x10 had a little dust in them. Lots of new variables to figure out for dust. I have very little dust on my 4x5's.

Ari,

I love this portrait! Everything comes together perfectly; the camera is suited to the subject and the casual mood, right down to the vignetting, and the format renders the detail and tonality luxuriously. There's so much to look at and wonder about. Coffee and keys; is he on his way somewhere? Very well done!

Here is a shot I took yesterday of two Red Shirt guards (they are actually dressed in black). The film is Adox Art 50 developed in Tetenol Ultafin. First time I have used the film, and I kinda guessed at development, then scanned the negative on a super cheap flatbed, so the quality of the image is low (but the negative is nice, and I can see myself reflected in his sunglasses). I took five other black and white shots of police, soldiers and demonstrators, and one color (my last sheet of Velvia 50).

Great "cadre" for a beautiful woman portrait !
... some more ?

Dear Miguel,

Merci... :)

A few more illustrations are coming, as I slowly process my current set of negatives, where I am capturing a few "Cowboys and Cowgirls," young and old, along the seven hundred kilometre plus "Cowboy Trail" located here in Alberta. There is a plethora of handsome rugged individuals that work the land, their wild horses and their free range cattle along the trail, that I meet during my time on their very large tracts of land, while I try to capture a few landscape images. I am also waiting for a few classic free range ranchers to agree to have their portrait taken, as their ranch time permits, where I am eagerly awaiting their approval to include a few interesting Albertan Cowboy portraits to my portfolio.

I do find this to be a fabulous challenge, since I do not consider myself to be a portraitist, and especially when I am surrounded by rambunctious wild horses that happen to be very curious about my large format equipment, while standing in their open ranges. They will nudge me out of the way to take a look at the ground glass, sniff the equipment, press their lips and tongue against the equipment for a curious taste and, or stare at their reflection in the lens, until I press them out of the way to capture an image.

A mare last weekend, placed her head on my shoulder to see into the ground glass as I worked the camera's controls, and she would not move until I took the cloth away from my camera, allowing her to see into the ground glass. They are curiously powerful animals, and seem to tolerate my presence.

Again, thank you, and I will try to present the images as I finish them, during the coming summer months...

That's really fascinating! I can't imagine having a horse resting its head on my shoulder as I work my camera. Or wanting to see the groundglass. You must be somewhat of a gambler too, to allow it to get that close to your equipment.

Looking forward to more pics.

Dear Peter,

I only gamble on the golf course, where I graciously take my Doctor's hard earned money and his associate's money, from their deep heavily vaulted pockets... :)

I only get spooked, when something pokes my leg in the bush, while I have my head under the dark cloth. As for the mare, she was in heat...

This was from 2003 - acquired via this forum. It lasts a lot longer than you think, someone on here mentioned they had been shooting with 64T from 88 and it just showed some base fog, no colour shift.

Feel free to post me that expired film if you don't like the results ;)

Brad, I really like that. You have infused in this portrait a sense of reverence that tells us more about the man than his physical features. And if the backlighting was something you did not want, I think you really have benefited from a happy accident, as the light streaming in is surely the cultural metaphor for the presence of God. I think he should be very pleased with this portrait.

Dear Jon and Mystery Jig,

You are obviously not from the west, and because you may have a wee bit of difficulty understanding why things are the way they are here in Alberta, I would like to invite you to Alberta to meet this rancher, and provide you with the opportunity to speak to him directly. He happens to be a well respected friend of mine...

That said, I am certain that he would be more than willing to answer your questions for a minute or two, before he exercised his true Alberta manners... :)

Dear Steve,

As I approach the ranchers, because I must ask them for permission to be on their property, I usually follow up with a question or two about their horses, gear, and whether they might be interested in an image or two, while they are wearing their range clothing, and riding their horses, or working their cattle. A few respond quickly, and few are not interested, but their wives usually get the better of them when their wives say yes.

That said, I have a few more images scheduled over the next few weeks, and I eagerly await the images of a few true blue Alberta Cowboys, and Cowgirls.

Very familiar looking old cowboy...

Dear Scott,

Thank you too... :)

I cannot imagine anyone from Southern Alberta that would not know this Southwestern ranching legend, especially if they are ranchers, or even closet cowboys.

As a side note, Dewey was very explicit with me regarding the placement of my equipment, because of my equipments size, and because it might disturb the wild horses, and even the more gentile trail horses. I was also instructed to not remove or move anything away from the proposed image site, because everything had a purpose within the immediate work area, and the horses knew when something was disturbingly astray, even momentarily.

I set my equipment just beyond Dewey's shoeing area, which happens to be just in front of this scene and behind my camera, where I calculated my exposure, set my focus, and sat down on the shallow porch to watch Dewey wrestle a wild stallion, while trying to put the stallion's last horseshoe in place. The stallion was extremely rebellious, forcing Dewey to the ground, so Dewey got up and immediately brought that stallion to its knees with a well placed powerful Alberta Boot, which allowed Dewey to finish clipping the hammered nails and shave the hoof. Upon completion Dewey walked over to the saddle and bridle cabin, grabbed a bridle, stood in the doorway, asked me where he had to look, and click.

We had a quick coffee and chatted a bit, before he took to the trail with his wife and a new hired hand, where he had to survey the trail for the next day's trail ride, upon the newly shoed and subdued stallion's back. Just another memorable moment when I look at that image...

By the way, how is that 150 treating you... ?

Dear benrains,

Unfortunately, that is not what I meant at all. Alberta's Cowboys tend to acknowledge our existence, and they tolerate very few city folk irregularities, and when you play in their backyard, they are more poignant to you than expected, because they are looking out for your safety. Cowboys understand the animal's temperamental and excitable nature under their care, especially when city folk are in unfamiliar territory and may create an unfortunate or accidental incident, where this is not considered to be irrational... :)

Jay Dusard happens to be a powerful inspiration for many of these images, especially since these ranchers are within striking distance of Calgary, where they present an excellent image making opportunity, going forward. Well you're certainly on the right track. Jay is a cowboy himself so in many ways his photography is a reflection of himself. I did a portrait of him a while back holding his much loved cornet. He is also standing in front of one of his best known portraits of Julie Hagen in Wyoming 1981. I'll post an the photo for you.

Make a long story short this is Photographer Jay Dusard, photographed in Scottsdale, Arizona 2008. Jay is an American Master. He documented the North American Cowboy through the support of a Guggenheim Fellowship Grant in the early 1980's. Some of Jays portraits have sold for over $7,000.00 dollars (US). He is an author of several books on the subject and has had several documentaries done on him including a PBS American Masters special.

The picture was made on an 8 X10 Deardorff camera and cropped to strengthen the composition.

Dear Brad,

Thank you for sharing the image of Jay Dusard, with a well placed image of Julie Hagen, which I happen to admire in the background... :)

I was introduced to Jay's images and Ray McSavaney's images many, many years ago through Bruce Barnbaum, while Bruce conducted a printing workshop in Calgary. Bruce mentioned that Jay taught him a few tricks with ferricyanide at an Owens Valley Workshop during the previous summer's session, where Bruce graciously passed the technique onto me for whatever reason. I was totally amazed at Jay's luminescent images, which I try to emulate to this day. Unfortunately, my web images do not show my image's luminosity all too well, but I still remember what Jay's intentions were, through Bruce's excitement, and that moment positively moved my images to a new direction.

All I can say, is that you are very lucky to know him this well...

Again, thank you for your comments, and sharing this image of Jay Dusard with the group.

Yeah, I know, I'm dragging up an old thread. But I just met Mr. Guildner at the post office on Saturday! I was picking up a package, and he was mailing some packages. I commented on a used Adorama box, "Oh, looks like someone is into photography," and we started chatting. Nice fellow! He's teaching at the local community college.
