Thanks, Daniel. I never tire of looking at portraits, or discussing them with other photographers, and I could ask a hundred more questions about how your relationships to your subjects inform your decisions about the lighting, materials, and equipment you use to portray them. I'm often surprised when looking through proofs of a session, a subject chooses his favorite. I think most people want to present their best appearance to the world, and these choices are revelatory, in more ways than one; they reveal something about the subject's self image, and something about the tension between the way the subject wants to be presented, and the way the photographer wants to be represented. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work; giving me something to look at, and something to think about.

On 5x7 Alum, about 4 secs. Tried to swing the back of my Century to get the far eyes in focus, but didn't get there.

Test shot, from my first couple of sheets of 4x5 (some scratches from not trimming my nails before I tried tray development, think a Combi-Plan is in my future). Taken with the Aero Ektar wide open at about 1/2s on Arista EDU 100, using the "hat shutter" method.

Apologies on the scan quality, I loaded a blank webpage on my laptop, set the negative down on it, and took a picture with my DSLR :p I've got access to a flatbed that does 11x16 transparencies at work, I'll probably be using that for my more serious stuff.

I like the spontaneous quality of your portrait. It looks more like MF work than most LF work I see. With view cameras, focus is so critical due to the typically shallow dof at close working distances, and due to the shutter lag between composition and exposure, any impression of movement is rare in this kind of work. Well done.

Some of the more technique-minded might find fault with your image, but I like the intimate, casual feel of it, and given your improvised scanning method, I can imagine a real print would look considerably more hi-fi. I used to use a lot of EDU 100 and EDU 400, when it was available; I think I have one more roll of 120. I must have gone through hundreds of rolls/sheets of that stuff, and made some of my most satisfying images with it.

Thank you for your comments - I love the shallow DOF of large format + slightly longer focal length. With that exposure and this additional one i just posted I used a slight forward tilt to gently throw out everything but the eyes (or in this case the eye). Then it's a matter of pleading with the subject to not move!

Yes, it's 5 sec exposure with 40 inches bellow extended. Indoor available light was used.He's not the 2nd owner, Dwayne Ealy was.

It's this silly little 50mm Dallmeyer projection lens (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rabato/4403800690/). I got it thinking I could try putting into a Polaroid Land 250 and ended up making a lens board both for a Hasselblad and the Toyo 45A. It can only do macro. Taking the front element off I can step a few cm away from the subject. I might have placed a Copal 0 shutter in front for picture taking.

Thank you for the kind words. I was having trouble getting the image in the ground glass properly in focus without a proper loupe, so I kind of guestimated. It looks like I missed focus on the closest eye by a little bit.

Focusing a LF camera is always a challenge. and compromise is often necessary. A good loupe makes a big difference.

Arista Edu was Forte, and I used a lot of that stuff in a lot of formats, up to 8x10. I have an 8x10 portrait of my youngest son that I really like, made on Edu/Forte 400 and developed in a rapid universal developer I formulated. I'd post it here, but it was made several years ago.

I have yet to make a LF portrait this month- maybe before it ends I'll have one to contribute.

A member of my photography group got engaged and several of us were invited to practice "working with models." Everyone was shooting DSLR except me - Toyo-Field 45AX, 210mm Schneider Symmer-S, Pentax 400AF flash, on Fuju Pro 160S. Printed last night to 8x10 on Fuji CA.

Getting very fed up with my Canoscan 8600f...

morca, besides from the blue toning, this scan seems fine ; it's sharp, with details in shadows and no blown highlights.
You just need to correct your color balance, when scanning OR with photoshop afterward.

However, I'd adjusted the image to look as much like the original slide as I could, (it was overexposed a half-stop, with slight flare) I prefer the washed out look.
My real quarrel with the 8600f is that it wasn't designed to do film larger than 120, so I have to stitch multiple scans together for 4x5. And that I can't adjust focus points.
Well, and that it's hopeless for higher contrast scans. I just finished scanning 4 rolls of Velvia 100, and the scans are pale (or rather, stark) shadows of the original slides.

Yes its Yaowarat Rd, morning.

The freeze is actually 1/60 (as far as i remember), all the makeup and hair are done by the professionals from M.A.C cosmetics Thailand. There are around 8 to 10 people behind this shot including me - the assistants, stylists, makeup etc.

Yes, there is a tripod, i'm not handholding F2 with 210 ApoSymmar with front rise, shifts and swings applied to both standards and lens almost quite open. ;))

Miguel that's an amazing shot. Im generally not a fond of the 'soft' look but that one is perfect. Enough sharpness to give focus to their faces and her profile, but not enough to become clinical or to draw attention to a tiny depth of field.

Miguel that's an amazing shot. In generally not a fond of the 'soft' look but that one is perfect. Enough sharpness to give focus to their faces and her profile, but not enough to become clinical or to draw attention to a tiny depth of field.

Camera movements and orientation are of great help when focusing wide open, subject position, light quality, momentum...
all these needs some awareness, step by step...

It's beautiful portrait! 24 seconds almost sounds eternity for many sitters and that's why wet plate portraiture has that interesting eyes! :)

My friend Eric poses for a 5×7 wet plate collodion tintype (on aluminum) wearing some of his Society for Creative Anachronism battle gear. That’s a two-handed Scottish broadsword, known as a claymore, he’s got in his hands. The hand tooled, leather scabbard was made by his father. He doesn’t use the claymore when he’s actually fighting. At that point, he uses a considerably less pointy sword made of rattan.

With a Star Camera Co. full plate camera and a German petzval lens at 10 seconds.

Wow, this is a good one! The swirl on the background is just rihgt, not too crazy. Post it in Chinese LLF and they will drive up price of Petzval lenses. Like Tri did in Vietnam LLF. :)

I love the pose and the idea but the amount of photoshop stress to make the face jump out of the image troubles me. Petzval on steroids. Petzval doesn't need the steroids.

Since I never photograph people (with rare exception), I've never participated in one of these 'portrait' threads. But I did make a portrait of sorts recently. This is an old terra cotta bust that I found in the Gladding McBean pottery company, in Lincoln, CA. GMcB produced a lot of architectural details for large city buildings and structures. Been around since 1875. Now they mostly make clay sewer and water pipe, and work on architectural restoration. But, a lot of old stuff is still laying around the factory. This statue probably was a second, or reject, and legend has it that is a likeness or Ray Crock.
