Website Update

My daughter has today completed an update of my website. The images span the years 1953 to 2009. The majority are large format, either 8x10 or 4x5.

Merg, you have a really, very, very serious problem with your web site.
For some reason the color is not being transmitted, and the images are only showing their grayscales. I hope it's just a problem with your scanner, and that it's not because all your Ektachromes have totally faded -- but if you had not been too cheap to shoot Kodachrome this would not be a concern.

I should mention that I have printed as large as 16x20. I like to put a few that size in an exhibition to break the visual monotony. However, I have always preferred the intimacy and detail of the smaller image, forcing the viewer to look closely. My first camera was a 4x5, and for five years I only made contact prints; some of those were purchased by Eastman House. Then I moved to 8x10 and made contact prints. Growing up around West Coast photographers in the 1950's, most all of the work I saw was in this tradition, or with minimal enlargement. The exception was Ansel, who was a forerunner of the current big print craze. I recall seeing his mural sized prints in a local bank, and they were certainly impressive; they were landscapes, and the size worked well. But for me, with my choice of subject matter, I have pretty much remained with the small print tradition. In fact, I have discarded some enlargements simply because they did not work as well as the smaller rendition.
