View Full Version : Getting an old Ilex Acme shutter to work with a Pocket Wizard

Howdy all. I recently got a fine Ektar lens in an Ilex Acme Synchro Shutter. The shutter itself seems to work fine, but I need to hook it up to my strobes via a Pocket Wizard.

Here's my problem: the Ilex shutter uses a double-post as its flash adapter; the Pocket Wizard uses a monoplug.

I've searched the net and am having a hard time coming up with an elegant solution. Now, the guy who sold me the lens included a double-post to household plug adapter. The best I can find online (at Midwest Photo Exchange, and also Adorama) is a household plug to PC adapter. That would mean:

post-to-household + household-to-PC + PC to PocketWizard

Is there a better solution? Or will I have to wire up three different cords to get my shutter to fire off my PocketWizard?

Thanks for any advice. :)

If you are comfortable with electrician tools, you should cut the household plug and attach "Right Angle Male Flash Plug" instead of it. Like this one:

This would eliminate one cable. A photo of connectors might help as well. Because if your double-post connector is removable from the cable without cutting, you can cut off PC socket of Pocket Wizard's cable and attach double-post connector instead of it.

Cheers,
Marko

Another option is Paramount Cords (http://www.paramountcords.com/bipost.asp).

I bought a "BP-PF Bipost to PC Female ( 6 inches )". It attaches to the bi-post and has a PC cord receptacle on the other end, leaving your options open to whatever sync cord you may encounter.

I would vote for making your own. Find a cheap PC sync cord you don't use anymore with a monoplug end, cut it strip it, cut the household end of the double-post cord strip it, attach both wires together solder and put heat-shrink around it and your done. Cheap and easy.
It should save you about $30 over Paramount Cords.

The cord I bought from Paramount was $25.50, shipped.

I addition to the numerous stock cords Paramount can make custom cords. I just ordered one from them. The prices seem quite reasonable to me. I also had a question and was able to reach a real person directly on the phone who quickly identified which end I needed and took my order.

Not counting the cost of the two cords used to make one. Of coarse a good solution requiring no cash outlay and no wait to order a cord. For my application I butchered a cord to use temporarily while waiting for my Paramount cord to arrive.
