8x10 to 16x20 enlargement

Before I start seriously thinking about this enlargement, I'd like to ask for some help.

Assuming I have a 300 mm lens for enlarging, what would the film to paper distance be to accommodate this 2x enlargement. I need to know if I need to plan to do this vertically or horizontally.

You can easily do this vertically, I make my decision to go horizontal enlarging at the 30x40 range and up.

I agree with Bob, you can easily make a 16x20 with a vertical enlarger. Although I think my lens is a 240mm which is more common for 8x10 enlarging.

Great meeting you at Indiana Dunes. When not shooting 7x17 I shoot 8x10 and enlarge on a converted cold light Durst 138. My darkroom ceiling is only 7’2”. I place the head 1” from the ceiling and use a 300mm Rodagon. I move the table with easel up and down for rough focus and adjust the lens up and down for fine focus. I have no trouble making 20x24 prints from full frame 8x10 with the table still 10-12” above the floor. Naturally if you are cropping you need a little more room, but then there is always a 240mm Rodagon. I have one but have not used it in four years.
