"Chops" and Claudia.

Claudia had just come home from a week and a half at Stanford University Hospital. She had been diagnosed with stage four lymphoma just about six months prior. She had had a rough week of therapy and looked like...well, bad but finally at peace. This is the last time I saw her alive. Chaps died a few months later.

Those two pet shots will win a lot of affection.

I’ve always yearned for a LF thread on wildlife, but suspected the difficulty of the subject would limit participation.

Yet I’m sure the efforts out there, by the most patient among us, would interest everyone. :)

Broadening the topic to include pets – as you’ve done – would help such a thread endure. And maybe including macro shots of tiny critters would help too. (For example, many plant & flower shots incidentally include insects.) Even beach shots often have shell fish in different shapes and colors. Many times in the forum, I’ve noticed distant animals or flocks of birds accenting landscapes…

It's something I've been contemplating for some time now, I have my son's dog, a Terrier, at home and would like to make an 8x10 negative of him. He would have to be tired though because he is a like a pistol when he hears any noise and gets distracted easily.

A touching story Brad, and a nice photo to accompany it.

I hope its successful Heroique, I have a bunch more pets to photograph so I will add some more to this thread.

Curt I have a Japanese Spitz that is in the same boat, Ill have to take him for the longest walk of his life before I can photograph him.

Beautiful tones. I have one question. The plant in the foreground--was that a deliberate incorporation or just circumstance?

My late but great Brittany Spaniel Quest I had a difficult time as it was using a Nikon D200 and usually only got the tail end of her disappearing out the frame. Some lovey shots posted. Jim do not remember if it was that shot or another that you posted elsewhere but it is a fabulous portrait of a cat.

Thanks !

The plant was a circumstance that I was obliged to incorporate ;)

As we know, pets don't often stay in one place very long. I was shooting some flowers in the yard, and noticed the dog. I moved the camera, changed the lens, and compsed, as quickly as possible.

Yeah, terriers are like that, that's why we love them :)

The alternative to waiting until he's tired or falls asleep (you might get there sooner than him!) is to set up, focus and meter for a certain spot then wait until he gets there. Flash would be better than any other light, IMO, since it would allow for smaller aperture and you wouldn't need to worry about long exposure time.

I posted this a bit ago in the alternative print thread. My brittany using a single miniscus lens of sorts, 8x10 salt print. She's all business in the fall, hates to see me with the camera instead of the shotgun... (yeah that's also her in my avitar)

Great thread, thanks for starting it. I have enough trouble photographing our two dogs and two cats with my digital camera. I've gotten some great shots on rare occasions with the digital (and 35mm in the old days) but never been brave enough to try it with a LF camera so nothing to post but I'm enjoying the thread.

Dear Frank,

The right image looks like an image from an old Walt Disney master animal trainer guide... :)

I used that guide to train un-trainable Beagles, where the thumb along side the nose with gentle pressure activated a nerve, and when applied properly with a firm "No..." immediately after they are caught doing something they should not be doing, generated a long term memory cell. I have not seen that training technique for several years. I wish that I could apply this technique to a few fourteen-year kids in the neighbourhood.

Hi Bob

Aggie is a pound rescue, so we don't know her early history. She has alot of Dalmation but with wire hair. At about 40lbs she is quite a bit bigger that a Border Terrier, but smaller than a Dalmation. Oh, and her eyes don't match.

Do you guys sedate your dogs to keep to the still long enough for a nice picture? :)

I am dog sitting Scarlette over the holidays, she is almost 15 yrs old and won't sit still long enough, and, after one flash, she never looked at the camera again. :(

This is the best LF I could get out of her after two attempts. I gave uo and went 645 after this one.

This is one of the few shots of the many I have of our dogs that I'm certain was LF. Ordinarily they would never stay still long enough. But I remember Ted had been set up for half an hour shooting a bird house in our back yard, and Shelby finally got fed up with trying to get him to come play with her. She planted herself right in front of him, threw back her head and gave him a piece of her mind. He was still under the darkcloth when she suddenly appeared, and he shot it.

That was two houses ago, and he was in an "exclusively B&W phase"... might it have been his Ebony? Don't know.

Hi Pete. I believe the the standard for Whippets in Britain are smaller than the AKC. But for a US Whippet, she's small. The standard in the US for males is 22 inches at the withers. I think females are the same or one inch shorter. She's about 19 inches and looks a lot more petite than most of my friend's Whippets. She's a great one, I've had 3 in the past 15 years and have a Saluki now too. Here's (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2517/4072434175_09031f79bc_o.jpg) a pic for scale with the chair and my daughter.

Great thread, trying to get a decent LF portrait of my husband's beloved beagle and beagle mix dogs is a real goal of mine. The mix is 100% his dog and remains suspicious of *all* of my attentions -- especially anything that looks like a camera.

Almost got the beagle once while I shooting in the backyard-- and she was crashed under a tree, until our neighbor saw her and offered the always food-obsessed animal a "snack"-- sigh.

Here’s a dog from the wild to throw into the mix.

I was composing a shot when I heard this coyote in the grass behind me. So I simply swung my camera around and snapped a shot. Moments later, he pulled a rodent out of the ground, swallowed it whole, and trotted back into the screen of trees.

I think his hunger brought him into the field – he didn’t seem too curious about me or my tripod.

You're right, a rare wildlife shot in my 4x5 portfolio.

Here’s a grainy crop of my wily friend – quite a handsome fellow, don’t you think? And a healthy coat of fur.

Had to try to photograph my rabbits with Toyo monorail camera yesterday :)

They were somewhat sleepy so I could focus and take a picture. The angle where picture is taken from is not a perfect, but I could not go lower - they would came instantly and lick the front element of my camera's lens... Or eat the lens hood :D

Some practicing and prefocusing and perhaps I could take a portrait in the living room.

Some great shots in here, I am especially fond of Michael W's shot.

I have a recent shot to add, of our Ragdoll Merlin. I thought this shot was a loss after scanning with Vuescan, but upon the installation of the OEM Epson software it scanned fine, go figure.

2nd shot is of Kira, a Burmese. There are some newton rings in the scan as I had to scan it directly on the glass, because the film holder cropped the tip of her paw.

Heroique,

You didn't need to go way out there to photograph a coyote! The Seattle Times has been running stories the past few days about coyotes doing very well in the urban environs of greater Seattle, with Magnolia prominently mentioned. Out here in our small town on the north Olympic Peninsula and Admiralty Inlet, we've had them in our yard in broad daylight, and recently there's been a lot of howling nearby at night (within 35-100 yards). Our sixteen year old cat, a very smart feline, has become very, very cautious. (Lots of black-tailed deer here too.) Sadly, I have no large format pictures of any of these local residents, so I envy your coyote photo.

Keith

Keith,

I'm glad to hear your cat is cautious w/ coyotes roaming near your yard!

Yes, our urban coyote population is growing, and our neighborhood cats are disappearing.

Usually, they go missing after we hear a late-night, high-pitched, spine-tingling cat shriek. Then eerie silence. But not a sound from our city coyotes. They've learned never to yip, yap or howl. Attracts too much attention!

"Scout," a pound puppy Newfoundland/Spaniel mix (figure that out) in Yosemite this past fall. Not too patient for a LF shooter, but I guess the bed of big leaf maple leaves were soft enough to keep him settled long enough for this portrait.

Nice thread - I mean, the countless opportunities of stalking wildlife with the large format... I recall that big buck that strolled through my frame while I metered, set the speed, cocked and pulled the dark slide... damn! almost got one. :-)

Oh, the soft focus effect is all PS - I long for that soft-focus lens, but for now I have to cheat.

This shows a black dog in shade, with sunshine lighting the trees visible through the windows. Without the extreme compensation provided by divided developer, this photo would have required either special lights, a reflector, or prolonged stand development. The resulting image might not have the same natural feeling. Instead, the dark values on the dog were placed on Zone III, the leaves outdoors fell on Zone XII, and... normal development in Divided Pyrocat HD took care of the rest. To make the final image, I had to add a little contrast.

Getting animals to behave for LF photos is always difficult, but sometimes I come across subjects who are quite cooperative. This camel didn’t even blink during set-up, exposure, or take-down. And what a noble smile! To thank him as I left, I fed him a carrot and scratched him under the chin. (At lower left – me, my tripod, and camera in shadow, my only LF self-portrait.)

How lucky are you, camels have a habit of spitting, this one must of been well behaved.

Poor Rusty didn't make it much longer from when this was taken. He was my grandparent's dog. There's no way I could get a photo of my dog with LF. I can barely get anything of her with much more mobile cameras. Even when she is tired. :)

Very close! A lot of people, even in person, say that. But he is a Bluetick coonhound. A rarer 'all blue' dog with no brown. That is his perch over the backyard for watching the squirrels and, more importantly, the rabbits! It took a while to get him to sit like that!

A way too slow 1/125 as its the fastest it can go. I felt like trying though. If you get lucky with the hovering or wait for the bird to perch it could have been sharp.

This was one of my earliest 4x5 images. It was the epic year of 2003 out in the Lancaster poppy area. It was a simple tilt focus, which in those earliest days, took me about 20-30 minutes to set up. By the time I got ready, my Lab had wandered into the scene. I exposed one sheet of Velvia 50 with her in it and then shooed her out for another sheet. The one with her was the better image.

Just this year, I learned the Antelope valley is crawling with Mojave green rattle snakes (Crotalus scutulatus), with about the deadliest venom in North America. Needless to say, my Labrador will not be wandering around in this area in the future.

Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia last month, with the Wista 45DXIII and a Nikon 300mm f/5.6 lens, TXP320 and an Orange filter. Whilst I was setting up, the mum here sort of charged at me, so I stood up on tippy toes, held my jacket out and said 'raaahr!', to which she stopped in her tracks, eyed me curiously for a moment, then slowly returned to her duties (as did I). Seems to me that's as good a technique as any...

Hello Marc,

May I ask how close can you focus with your M-300/5.6 and the Wista DX?
Or is the DXIII a version that has a longer bellow?

Hi Luc,

Probably not a lot closer than that (about 8 metres away) - I've never really tested it, but certainly the front standard is nearly as far as it can go. Now that you mention it, I'm going to definitively test this when I get home later...

I just got a Wista 45DX to leave with my family in France and I am using it with only a 210mm.
I do not think that it has enough bellow extension to use with my M-300/9 if I compare to my Chamonix 45N2.
Other than that, I love the DX.

Scott: (Bearded dragon photo) - I find this shot amazing! Can you provide a little of "how I did it?" I look at the picture, the first techinical things that I think of are bellows extension & correction factors, reciprocity, do bearded dragon move really really slowly, and so on. IOW, not as curious about film processing as how you actually took that excellent portrait. I guess I also have no idea how big the bearded dragon is, I guess if it is the size of a medium dog that isn't as much of a close-up as it appears. But, as I said, you really got me interested!

Thanks, Peter! The lizard's about 10" long, including tail. The head is shot about life size. I set him in the sun, hoping he'd bask and not move, but he wasn't happy to be there, and kept spinning his head around. I focused on him in roughly this pose, rated the film at 400 so I could get a reasonable shutter speed with the bellows compensation (about 3 stops). Think it was about 1/15 second. Inserted the holder, pulled the darkslide, and waited for him to move back into the position he was in when I focused. Then hit the shutter. A lot of luck...

It's not a dead thread, just one of the less active ones.
Capturing pets on LF, particularly cats, is a greater challenge than capturing a landscape or still life. :p

Every time I set up the camera, the cats insist on coming up and sniffing the lens, so I spend the next hours cleaning it.

Tigger is a nice cat. :D

More gators!
I'm ecstatic with this shot. These little guys were patient with me while I set up the 4x5. I have never seen baby ones in the wild (don't worry, I was in a safe boardwalk area with no way for mama to get me, if she would've shown up).
I luckily happened to throw in the 300/9 Nikkor before going out today. Shot with some expired Velvia 100F, f/45, 1/2s exposure, front tilt, slight crop:

Yeah I risked it, but I wanted to really make sure they were in focus as I just kinda took a stab at how much tilt I needed and focused by eye. The boardwalk has a high rail, so I was leaning the tripod on the rail, pointing it way down with as much fall as I could do, to get this. Think 45 degree angle. It worked out, barely. The rear one's legs are moving a bit.

Not even in an aquarium though? I must say, seeing any animal out in the wild though is 100x better. More exciting when you nail a shot too!

First dog, a Llasa Apso, would just sit and ham it up - never hard to get a pic even when setting up strobes, etc. Then came a Toy Poodle ... had her since 4 months old, never did anything that would put fear into her, but as soon as she'd see the lens aimed at her (forget coming over to investigate) she'd scurry out of the room. I once knew a woman who was the same way. Strange.

They're both over 12 years, so not great at jumping. They'll both stay on the chair as long as I'm paying attention to them. Nigel is pretty good at sitting still. Pixie is a bit more difficult. She moved from focus (or maybe I missed) in one shot, got bored and laid down in another. A few negs in the trash too. Two together increases the difficulty exponentially.
