I thought I would share my new creation, a rolling backpack I've dubbed the Mastodon. It's an unholy marriage between an internal frame backpack and a jogging stroller. I've only taken it out a couple of times, but it seems to be working out. It's about 4 feet tall and surprisingly light (and can still be worn as a backpack, if necessary). I just need to get some kind of kickstand for it so it can stand up on it's own. I think it ended up costing about $100 altogether.

Any feedback is welcome. Has anybody else tried anything like this?

Looks great. Can you take the pack off and carry it on your back, you know, for the final summit push?

Nice. Several here have resorted to stroller transport. It's an excellent solution for avoiding early exhaustion with a heavy load. Really good for photo excursions short distances from the car over moderate terrain. Does yours fold up in any fashion that would be suitable for small car transport?

Frank: I should have added that it's just the wheels and axle from the stroller, so it does not add as much bulk to the pack as one would think. Fortunately it still works as a backpack even with the wheels attached. Although the wheels do not come off, it can still be worn if I need to get over any especially rough terrain.

Nathan - it fits in the back of my station wagon, I don't know how it would do in a regular car.

I thought about just wheeling my backpack around in a stroller, but I decided to go the hybrid route instead. This is lighter and more maneuverable than using both, and I think will allow for longer excursions. I cover 5+ miles on a good day, so I needed something that would take the weight off my back. Haven't done a long walk with it yet, but I'm hoping it works out.

There's also the Sherpa Cart– http://www.sherpacart.com

I use one and it works very well, easily maneuverable and holds a lot. Not as lightweight as dalton's though.
