I'm clearing out 40 years of accumulated junk. How do you dispose of LF trannies? They seem undestructable.
The polaroids are easy. Just tear them up. But how to store the keepers other than by scanning? Is the chemistry going to last like bromide prints?
Here's a keeper on 4x5 done with a 120mm Sironar. Any one else got polaroid portraits?

Easy Christopher-
send them to me-

I like that one, I've seen it before I think-
Interesting that he's leaning on a horizontal plane...

I've got some, posted here already in the other threads-
ok to include some here too, do you think?

should have said that I've seen Him here before-
I'd make a terrible lawyer, everything thrown out on technicalities...

Now that I see it again, I think I prefer the second,
more enigmatic, with the shadow-
but he's a very memorable character-

They look like they're scanned from the print-

These ones T55, scanned from the neg-
Both shot on a small French cinema projection Petzval, 185mm-

From last month, I have a habit of posting at the very end of the month-

Joseph. There must be a lot more to chew on in a polaroid negative. How do they scan compared to other negs? I only know pola prints and give up on low tones and let them drop out altogether making virtue out of necessity.

jb7
3-Dec-2009, 15:44
Christopher, I've got a limited experience with other b/w negs-
I've only used Foma films-

They scan beautifully, really soft tonality, imperceptible grain-

These were both slightly underexposed,
in that they produced an acceptable print-
but they weren't underexposed by much-
there weren't any tones lost that I didn't need-
perhaps the stated exposure guidelines refer to printing rather than scanning-

It's a lovely film, and I'm rationing it-
I'll only shoot one per setup,
and usually I'll only do one setup per person...

Vinny, thank you...

Those glowing tones are what I like about T55. I don't know what to attribute it to, so finding a replacement is difficult.

Ken Lee
4-Dec-2009, 08:15
The glowing tones: Could this be a matter spectral response - which we notice when shooting skin tones ?

Or might it be just something unusual about the density curves in the upper values ?

Jim Edmond
4-Dec-2009, 08:46
It does seem to be most noticeable with skin tones, but is there to some degree in still life too. Spectral response is an interesting idea as you'd think curve shape would be easy enough to duplicate.

In it's heyday you could book the Polaroid 20x24 studio in London, Boston, NYC, Tokyo, and ? plus they would send one on the road. In the mid-90s when I was tempted I think it cost $600 plus $30 per pull. It came with a technician too. Didn't they use like six of the largest Elinchrom packs for basic lighting?

But I am sure Christopher will give us the details since he actually used one.

benrains
4-Dec-2009, 11:44
The 20x24 Polaroid cameras are still around and in use. John Reuter and friends have the equipment for making the developer packs, and are close to having everything in place to manufacture their own developer chemicals- http://20x24studio.com/

They're also running a portrait special next week, $1000.00 for 3 photos-

Have a look at Joyce Tennyson's (http://www.tenneson.com/polaroid/polaroid_images_01.html) big polaroid stuff.
I was once working in a N.Y. studio next door to where she was doing her edition of the Pirelli Calendar and dropped in because we'd met in Italy. She was getting an amazing one good shot in three - Polaroid technicians are really stingy with film. I got the idea that the art-director was secreting the non-keepers for auction.
Joyce has a way with polaroid and has a lot more experience on the big camera than most.
My go on the big machine was insignificant. I did an ad campaign for the SX and got invited, with others, to try out the machine in wheels. There were Elincas and it took some argument to use them bounced. I missed the nasty cheek light that was not turned off for Panza's shot. Colour polaroids come best with soft light but you can get through a box of 8x10 before you get the hues right.

They say on that website that they have enough film "to last many years".

I thought that Polaroid film had a limited lifespan. At least, it couldn't go in the freezer. No?

On their Facebook page, they also say that the Dutch group (Impossible Project ) is indeed looking at bringing out film in larger formats.

In it's heyday you could book the Polaroid 20x24...

One of the 20x24 visited our university many years ago. I assisted the photographer (one of our professors who go a grant to use the camera) and made "ghost" prints, though I don't think they were every used. After the print was fully developed, I transferred what was left of the image onto watercolor paper.

The 20x24 folks bought out Polaroid's remaining emulsion coated film stock for the those cameras. The emulsion supposedly lasts a very long time. It's the developer chemicals that have the limited shelf life. (The developer packs are loaded separately from the film with the 20x24 camera.) I've read they've enough film to last them at least 4 years at their current usage rates, and they've enough good old stock developer chemicals to last them a while, but they're going to soon be manufacturing their own developer.

I've heard the same about the Impossible Project doing LF films, but I don't know. I think their main focus is still with replacing integral film. The pack/sheet films are very different beasts. And even if they did come out with an 8x10 replacement, I doubt many hobbyists would be able to afford it, but I'd love for them to prove my skepticism unfounded.

In the mid-to-late 1980s, there was an instructor in the Fine Arts department at the University of Ottawa, who went by the name Evergon, who made 40"x80" Polaroids. At the time, his work was controversial, but he had a following and I recall being quite struck by prints that I saw at an exhibit of his work. They were unlike any photographs that I had seen before. He now teaches at Concordia University in Montreal. Info on him: www.evergon.ca

I wonder who else worked with Polaroid's 40"x80" cameras.

Christopher,

I just checked my notes (this photograph was made in 2006 with natural window light), and it is a Type 55 neg scan. The original PS file shows a global contrast correction of the scan with levels and a burn-in vignette at the borders.

An optical print with the negative made on Ilford WT paper, shows slightly less burning and slightly reduced contrast in the face.

I'd like to print this one again, since I had just started darkroom work back then...

The formal chair (but weirdly proportioned - what's with the legs, and rail between the two front legs - are they original, or is this chair some kind of gerrymandered amalgam?), the floor, moulding and wall, the especially the unplugged plug, are perfect.

Well, not too weird. It's a very typically designed wingback style chair, although this particular one is fairly modern--I'd guess late 1960s or early 1970s based on the upholstery fabric. That said, the aesthetics of the chair are much less noticeable when a beautiful lady is sitting on it.

vaughn

hi Vaughn.
It is SO simple.

overexpose with approx 1 aperture - let the image develop for 10-15 sek (depending on how solarized you want it), and then pull the pos/neg apart, and give the negative a "shot" from a flash - let it stay for about half a minute, and then rinse/fix as normal..

Actually on Type 55 you can partially solarize! (due to the size).do as the 665 but don't use a flash to reexpose, but use a little strong flashlight (maybe with a small black cardboard wrapped around it to "control" the light - then "paint" on the developing type 55, and you decide where to solarize!

Great fun!

Thanks for the comments.

Wow Great Gandolfi. Reminded me of this I took years ago and more by luck than design I was toning the neg in copper toner, keeping it in the soup for much too long and voila! Solarized. I think at the time I was more impressed by the tone than the solarization, there was a nice depth to it.
The second version shows an adjustment on the red channel in PS to bring out the facial details.

A couple of "portraits" of a musician. She is one of my students, and plays very well on her flute.
We wanted to try and make some alternative portraits of her, playing.

Painted with light. Solarized.
Pol 665 Pos/neg.

http://www.apug.org/gallery1/files/4/8/8/7/fl_jte-_5.jpg

and then this:

http://www.apug.org/gallery1/files/4/8/8/7/fl_jte-_6.jpg

We also made a more "classic" looking portrait.
Because of her facial features I wanted to try and make her look like the old photographs that was made of native americans (holding a pipe).

I don't know whether I succeded, but it was fun to try!
