I find the staining developers very interesting to work with, but PMK Pyro is the only one that has so far given me consistently high quality; I'm interested in trying a catechol based developer, but my experience with DiXactol when it was available a few years ago was that it was very inconsistent and several negatives were ruined. I've just come across another staining developer, Tanol (http://www.moersch-photochemie.de/content/shop/negativ/lang:en) from Moersch, and am interested in any experience you may have had with it, and any comparisons to PMK Pyro?

I have started working with it recently, and am very pleased. I have to say I have never used Pyro devs, so I cannot directly compare (would be interested in comments on that myself), but Tanol produces wonderful negatives. I have one result online at http://www.flickr.com/photos/csant/4106492529/
My notes on that picture:

I discovered staining developers, namely Tanol - and I am hooked… The negative itself could already go as a slide to look at, so smooth, creamy delicate and rich it is. (As a sidenote, Tanol seems to have a very pleasant smell, reminds me of that "combination of grassy notes with a tang of acids and a hint of vanilla over an underlying mustiness" somebody described old books with…).

So far my results are very consistent.

Just read the product description on the Freestyle website.

Sounds a lot like Pyrocat-HD, in glycol, but priced much higher.

And less poisonous?

Less poisonous?

Only if you drink a large quantity of it.
