I have been given a Linhof Technika III that has corrosion on the aluminum frame. Can anyone suggest a good safe way to clean this?

Hi Simon,

I had an Arca Swiss model A (?) that had the aluminum frame in pretty grungy condition. Some Mother's aluminimum and Mag Wheel Polish cleaned it up. One word of caution is the metal must be uncoated as the polish will clean off any coating and is not recommended on Anodize. The bare aluminimum cleaned up nicely.

I should think you could find an equivalent at any car parts store.

It's a labor of love but the results are like new.

Enjoy your new camera.

Best,

Tim

simon,

i have got a III where the aluminium frame is chromed! i believe that was the way linhof finished the bodies trimmings in the early 50's. since mine was very clean when i got it i just had to polish it a bit. be very careful with anything that could rub off the chrome trimming in case your model is treated in the same way. depending on the amount of corrosion i would rather leave it the way it is.

Bare Aluminum is difficult to clean in small batches,...
But easy for a person with patience.
To what extent you can afford to remove the specific part.... the better.
Otherwise, it's a kitchen sink job.
