Good midrange price scanner for B&W negative and photos

Am looking for a good midrange price scanner for some B&W work particularly for scanning images fora portfolio and some negatives but don't know the first thing about them any advice?

A good start would be by looking at threads about the Epson 750V.... then it goes on up from there in price and quality.

Define midrange. Midrange between free & $1,000? Midrange between $2,000 and $10,000?

Under $1,000 & multiformat (35mm, 120, 4x5, 8x10) you have your choice of Epson, Epson or Epson. Current or previous models. The 4990 is older, but decent. The V700 & V750 are current, new and maybe a fraction better than the 4990.
