Hi guys, I have recently delved into the LF photography world, and am finding a few teething issues... While I have grasped the whole 5x4 photography thing reasonably well, I am wondering if there is anyway I can attach a roll film back (say 6x9 or 6x12 or something) to my camera?

The other problem is I'm not so sure what the camera actually is, ha. I am reasonably sure it is a Plaupel Profia, but it is just the lens boards that suggest this?

Thanks,
David

I have no first hand experience with the Plaubel camera, you can certainly use a roll film back with it. If it has a "universal" back...one on which the ground glass frame is easily detachable and which has slides to hold accessories in its place...you can choose from a wide variety of roll film backs. If it has a "spring back"...one on which the ground glass frame is not readily detachable...you will need a Calumet or similar back which will slide in below the ground glass frame like a sheet film holder.

If you'll post a pic of your camera someone will identify it easily.

oh, by the way, since this was your first post: Welcome to group therepy! :)

Attached are pictures of the camera, plus the system that holds the back/ground glass on... It does detach easily, I'm assuming that's a good thing in this case?

Would someone be able to point me in the direction of a compatible roll film back?

Hello
The back seems to be reversed in the upper picture. Turn it around, and see what it looks like. I think some older Plaubel backs had no way to conveniently remove the ground glass frame, they were probably constructed to take metal one-sideded sheet film holders. Later models had Graflok backs, and if that is the case here, you can use a number of roll film holders. If not, you may want to look at the slim types that go under the ground glass, such as Linhof Rapid Rollex, the old Adapt-a-roll (for 620 film format, different spools than modern 120 format) or Calumets C1 / C2 (and some others).

Good luck!

David, the backs for the "Profia" 4x5" where always made for double-film-holders. (Single-holder-backs where made for early "Peco" cameras.) But for RF holders one needs a special back, "PS 7433", with removable ground-glass. In your second pic you have removed the whole back. Can you show us a pic from this back?

hi david,

your camera is a plaubel peco profia. 3 ways to use rollfilm.
1. see peters way: 4x5 back with removabele groundglass. you frame your picture remove the gg adapt the rf-holder and shoot.
2. usual 4x5 back with the calumet rf-holder. you don't habe to remove the gg and just insert the the calumet holder just like a 4x5 holder.
3. plaubel made also an appropriate gg 6x9 for their "rada" rf-holders. i imagine this item is hard to find in the usa.
enjoy your plaubel! made in frankfurt.

The ground glass does look quite easy to take off, just need to unscrew 4 screws and hey presto...

The four screws are for exchanging a, broken, groundglass only. As mentioned before the "PS 7/433" back is a different one. This back is aviable from Plaubel as one can see http://www.plaubel.com/download/Plaubel.pdf here.
