Here's the first neg out of my new (to me) Seneca Improved View whole plate camera.
Subject matter not too exciting, but I'm happy the camera is finally operational.
Front yard - Black Eyed Susans
TMY-2 in Diafine with a 9" f5.6 petzval lens.
I wanted to make a really nice swirly image with this lens. The coverage of the lens is considerably smaller than whole plate at infinity and focusing close (about 3 feet) almost covered the film giving a nice sharp center and some great swirlies on the ground glass.
Then reality struck. Hmmm, 400 iso film outside in daylight with a barrel lens and no shutter. I figured the fastest I could move a piece of black mat board up and down over the lens (Galli style shutter) was about 1/8 second, so I had to stop down the lens with a waterhouse stop to f32. There went the swirlies except for the extreme edges of the glass.
Exposure was pretty darn close! Disappointed about the swirlies, though. What a great step up from 4x5.
