Canadian actress Natalie Brown.
I had to shoot her for the paper, I dragged my dad's speed graphic along that day and tried to shoot all my jobs (none due for the next day's paper). It was tougher than I thought and it gave me new respect for the gang that came before us, dragging a SG and graphmatics all day long and had to shot a job with one or two sheets.

She was great to work with.

Hi PViapiano
Thank you very much !
Yes, it was taken at backstage and the whole 'theater' is a bamboo scaffolding structure built in a week and could host 800 people.

300mm Imagon on an 8x10 2D.

I hate this lens. Worthless fuzz, not worth the crappy glass it's made from. These lenses are truly an embarrassment to any camera you put them on. I'm ashamed to say I ever used one.

(oh, and if anyone knows of a 480mm Imagon for sale, please let me know...)

Awesome, Mark!

Got a few new lenses to play with yesterday. This is a Rauber-Wollensak in a Solograph shutter (which is spotless and works flawlessly) on 5x7 Arista.EDU Ultra 100.

Been way too busy in the studio with the digital moneymaking photography to post here lately, but I was having a tidy up and found this unwashed 55 neg hiding in the corner from a session earlier this year....
scanned as is with all the dried up polaroid gunk still on it plus dust that stuck to the gunk...

I have uploaded this portrait in the "alternative printing"thread, so sorry for that, but Finally I have made my self a new portrait..

Laura is a student of mine. she is a fantastic person - extreamly beautiful - pure gold in her soul..
And to top it, she is a fantastic painter! With a large, impressive production behind her....

So I made this portrait of her in bromoil - and I did it "wrongly" on purpose - to get a sense of sketch in the image. Because of her being a painter..

Thanks all - it means a lot!!

I know the way I, and my girlfriend, makes it, is not the common way..

We havn't figured out how to do it with normal bromfriendly papers... - we use liquid emulsion as matrix.
It gives other types of results, but it certainly has some possibillities you don't see the "normal" way..

Thanks again.

(PS: my girlfriend is also a member in here, but I havn't been able to pursuate her to submit images yet... hopefully she will - she is very talented!)

Lovely, Emil! I wish my monitor could do justice to an original bromoil print. The coming together of image and craft is perfect.

And Scott, the sincerity and directness of the gaze from those young eyes is powerful.

These portrait threads have become treasure troves... :)

What's not to like? I know...Moms always want a big smile.

This is better than a smile...wonderful portrait!

In his new book, The Printed Picture, Richard Benson talks about the ubiquitous "smile" in so many photographs (wedding, celebration, etc) and the moms always wanting the smile no matter how forced...interesting.

Haven't had anything to contribute in a while. Saturday was the culmination of the Nevada Boomtown History conference in Tonopah, NV. and many of the attendees came in their best camp attire for the evening meal and dancing. I was present with the 1880 Anthony and Scoville fitted with an early Euryscop II Portrait lens.

Victoria,

That's pretty remarkable work.

I'm curious, what's your market? I see from your website you're a commercial photog, which makes me wonder whether this is personal work or if this genre, too, fills some kind of commercial demand.

Is an envelope pushing "...stays in Vegas" campaign about to hit us like a ton of bricks :D ?

let's keep this wide angle thing going...

yeat another self portrait, maybe someday i will learn to do this so i can shoot other people also

I was trying to get everything out of my cheap ass equipment, shot with Raptar 90mm f6.8 @ f32, quit a bit of lens and film movements where involved in this shot. Nice to see this lens actually can deliver.

I ran out of room a bit for my strobe, and got only a dim sidelight to hit my eye.. shame, it kinda was a big thing in this image.

Victoria,
I'm curious, what's your market?

Commercial work went digital when century turned over, nobody needs or cares about film too much for commercial work:) Nowdays I do LF film only for editorial/personal work. Pics get published here and there and I do have constant editorial demand, but by no measure there is any "commercial demand" or any notion of "market" per se.

My granddaughter was willing to sit for a few minutes while I "fiddled" with my "toy." After I shot the picture she ran to the ground glass to see the result (a product of the digital age) - after explaining how it would be a while until it was done she went on to other things. I haven't tried too many times to use large format with the family, but she is happy with the results and said she will do it again. It was on HP5 using a 5x7 Canham with a 240mm - open shade at 1/4 second around f8.

this is a portrait in downe, kent UK, of the descendants of Charles

so the hermagis was an obvious choice.

Looks like a strobe firing through a giant silk (or even gianter softbox) as a backdrop, with the subject lighting coming mostly from the light wrapping around and bouncing back.

All: thank you very much for the high praise. I am very new to large format photography but i absolutely love it. It was shot on a Horseman L45 with a Tokinon 135mm lens that i got with another old 4x5 Burke & James.

Bensyverson. That is absolutely spot on. Its a silk-like material, actually a white fabric used as inner-curtain when they make showercurtains. Dirt cheap and have similar optical qualities to the front cloth in a softbox. hint here for those who want to make their own modifiers ;D It was hung down from a background stand.

Behind it are actually an old Pro-2 unit with 2 heads firing at 600Ws which totally blows out the fabric. I then used a lastolite reflektor screen (about a meter diameter, silver) to bounce back light to her face or it would have been a bit too dark.

Supersimple to set up but creates a lovely angelic light.

Well, you may be new to LF, but it certainly seems to suit you!

I assisted a beauty shoot on Thursday, and we wound up adapting your technique for one of our setups. Coupled with a small softbox overhead to add a little contrast back in, it gave us a gorgeous natural look. So thanks for the dose of inspiration!

For some reason I like this. Perhaps the rock implies something about the portrait subject. (and that could be a variety of things up to interpretation.)

There's a lot more potential variety you could have here. I'd have the subject wear all black, all white (perhaps a tee shirt), staring down the camera, backed up and leaning relaxed against the rock with arms folded, vertical format standing on the rock, etc...
