While I was in the US recently I bought an Epson 2450 for $20 on craigslist to use for scanning 4x5 negatives. I have two objectives for this:

1. to scan negatives to post on the LF forum, or other websites
2. to scan negatives of family photos I took on my trip to save an distribute on a cd to other family members at a quality level that would allow them to print up to 8x10.

Can anyone suggest the dpi level I should set for these two specific applications?

Thanks, Tim

1200 for up to 8x10" prints should do it. For web purposes 720 should be enough.

For convenience you can select the desired print size and the printer's DPI (if known) on the Epson Twain window. I prefer to scan at higher resolution to allow for cropping and for unforseen future use. Image editing needs to be done only once for any size future print. The images can be downsized for whatever need one has.
