Since there is another thread in the camera section talking about light weight 8X10 cameras. I think it does make sense to talk about light weight lens kit. Well, the lens has to have coverage for moderate movements. For example Nikon M300 has IC 325mm, that doesn't count.

I would put a few lens down first. Fuji 450c, 600c. I don't have a 300C, so I don't know if it has the IC for moderate movement.

Anyone?

The Fuji 300C has a 380mm image circle and the Fuji 240A has a 336mm image circle.
Both are small, light-weight lenses with adequate coverage for 8X10, with movements.

I might give 300C a try. I don't think there are any new 300mm lens in copal 1 that covers 8X10.

Don't forget the 305 G-Claron, it is not as small as the other lenses mentioned but is not particularly heavy.

You might be able to find a Fuji 300A that's EBC coated. It's in a Copal 1 shutter and been discontinued for quite a while. More expensive, but a super lens.

"A" stands for apochromatic (6 element lenses).
"C stands for compact (4 element lenses).

I followed one thread about 300C and 300A. There is only 2 degree coverage difference between these two, but I haven't seen people compare these two side by side.

Wolly 159mm f12.5 Ex WA in Alphax 3 (not much bigger than Copal 1) coated. 210mm f9 Computar in Copal 1 270mm Schneider G-Claron early (dagor type) in Copal 1 360mm Ronar in Compur 2, 450 Fuji C in Copal 1. If like me you can live with a Packard inside the camera you can do it all with barrel lenses and get even smaller.

210 is one of my favorite focal length. How does 210 computar compare with fuji single coated W and bigger Sironar W?
What is G-claron early dagor type? I thought G-claron is 6 elements in 4 groups.

Why I love my Cooke XVa. Three lenses in one. All configurations optically brilliant.

With it and my 240 mm, I can cover most of my needs.

The 210 Computar some claim is usable on 11X14. It has a lot of wiggle for 8X10. I wouldn't use it on an 11X14 though. The earliest G-Clarons around 1968 were dagor type. 3 cemented elements each group. I just favor them. Wonderful contrast characteristic.

Jim, I have a Wolly 159mm f12.5 Ex WA in an Alphax. I would consider that a marginal 8x10 lens -- corners are dark and mushy, but I do like it for images that call for dark and mushy corners (and they do exist). But perhaps it is just the individual example of lens that I have. Even though it is marked as an 8x10 lens, if one wants a sharp, evenly lit negative, 5x7 is about what mine really covers (perhaps full plate would also be covered.)

A nice small 210 would be a Wolly WA Graphic Raptar, but mine is not in a shutter.

Basic - 3 lens - 210 Kowa, 300 Fuji C, 450 Fuji C; 2 lens - Germinar 240-W and the Fuji 450.

I also have a Cooke Series viib 158mm which I carry if I foresee a WA opportunity - this is mounted in a Copal 1 shutter; and the longest lens I ever carry is a Fuji 600 C - which is a gem for such a long lens. I do have both a Fuji 300C and a 300A - very hard to pick them apart although I tend to take the A out with the 8x10 because it does have a bit more coverage... I've tested them side by side a few times and it's just about impossible to pick them apart. I used to have a Fuji 360 A which is a fabulous lens, but I just never really felt the need to have a 300, 360 and 450 in the bag at the same time. I do have a huge Rodenstock 360 Sironar which is handy for shooting at large apertures if there's wind and I need fast shutter speeds - but it's a "from the car" only lens.

I use a 121mm Super Angulon, 165mm and 210mm Angulon, 240mm and 300mm Symmar, and a 355mm G-Claron. The 300mm Symmar is far from light-weight, except when compared with the 360mm Symmar which I keep for indoor use only. The 210mm Angulon goes along for the extreme coverage, which I frequently find myself needing.

The two "portable" Symmars have the added benefit of being convertible, to 420mm and 500mm respectively.

I'm positively addicted to the Fuji 360A and 450C, but often use either a 240A or 250 G-Claron as my wide lens, and sometimes a 600C on the long side. When I want a lens
for selective focus I use a 14"Kern dagor.

BTW does 14" dagor (not the Kern dagor) fit in any shutter?

Don't dump on the 300M Nikkor until you have tried it. I have never run out of light with mine. The commercial Ektars are nice too.

The lightest ones I have are the 240 G Claron & 159 Wollensak EWA. In the longer focal lengths, 19" Artars are quite light and compact for what you get. If you come across an aluminium barreled version it hardly wieghs anything!

The 300 M Nikor is also a nice lens. Movments appear to depend more on the individual lens---mine is too constrictive but some get all kinds of wiggle room out of the lil' thang.

The 159 Wolly in also limited very limited when it comes to movements. The 240 G, when stopped down, gives you so much acreage you might want to plant corn! :D

I have tested mine, with some rise, the image at corner is not acceptable even on the ground glass. I believe if you shoot straight on, the image is very sharp, but if you just move out the claimed IC, the quality degenerate immediately.

Another advantage of the Fujinon 300C/450C combination is that both lenses use the same 52mm filters.
