I need advice for buying a new 22 inch LCD monitor. I'm not a pro so I would like to find something for less than $300, or a bit more if it will have significantly better image quality. I know I won't get something great at that price, but that is my budget.

Dell outlet has great prices on refurbished monitors.

I just got a 24" refurbished monitor from them, and can not tell the difference from the new version I bought a year and a half ago.

I think they have the price range you want.

I have been using a Dell 19 inch Ultra Sharp monitor for several years now and it's really good. The Dell Ultra Sharp 22 inch widescreen monitor is $269. The color on mine is very stable. The thing about these less expensive monitors is that they don't have a great angle of view but it's fine. The thing is that most of the time you work in the center of the screen anyway. The edges of the screen are usually where you have the things other than your actual images.

The really expensive monitors have very very wide angles of view but you have to pay at least $1000 for that. I know a lot of photographers who use the Dell Ultra Sharp screens. Good luck and have a nice day.

Beware most (if not all) 22 inch panels are TN panels, which are the worst for photo editing due to there very limited viewing angle. You ideally want a panel with s-ips or failing that pva tech. Most monitor specs don't state what panel type it has. Heres a good link that'll help you with it.

Just type the name of the monitor that your looking at in the search bar and it will tell you which panel type it is

On the Canadian site it is listed as ips, but on Dell's USA site the display type is not listed, but this is probably what I will opt for:

I just bought a 22" HP monitor #W2207 at Best Buy which rotates for vertical images for $260. They should have done this years ago! (Maybe they did, for all I know?)

Dear Ron,

Just a side note, and realizing your budget happens to be very tight, but when you have a moment take a quick look at this site: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/638065.html ...

My previous comments in another post referred to a manufacturer that continuously tries to deliver a quality monitor with an IPS typed panel, and because their sales may increase to a point that prevents them from using the IPS typed panel, they periodically must switch to a different supplier and, or a different manufacturing plant, which may have a non IPS panel available in inventory. This site was not the source of my data during my own personal review, but this site is one of many that regard the preferred screen differences to be annoying.

A few sites that you might take a moment to review are as follows:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/monitors/display/lcd-parameters.html

http://www.pureoverclock.com/article641.html

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/panel_technologies.htm

The differences, and especially the opinions between IPS and PVA, happens to be greater than all the Carter Liver Pills ever made. I hope you find a great inexpensive monitor that performs to your expectations... :)

Widescreen vs. 4:3 ratio screens? Why would anyone use a widescreen over a 4:3 screen for doing photo editing?

Widescreen vs. 4:3 ratio screens? Why would anyone use a widescreen over a 4:3 screen for doing photo editing?

Mainly because it opens up your editing area in huge ways, mostly by absorbing the pallet and panel space in software such as Photoshop and Lightroom, CaptureOne, etc.

I am not a big fan of how wide screen monitors look on your desk, but I am a HUGE fan of how they allow you to organize your workspace for image work.

Let us know how you like that monitor. It seems like an incredible value at $299 with free shipping and an IPS panel.

I am very pleased with it. It appears equally sharp to the CRT I had, color gamut is good and the stated viewing angle of 178 degrees seems accurate.

I got recently a demo 20" NEC LCD2070NX (S-IPS panel). It is really great. I paid 160 euro for it. After calibrating it looks really great. The screen of my new MacBook is color-less in comparison to the NEC.

I was also considering the new Dell wide screen 2408WPF but it costs more.

24" wide screen has the same height as 20" normal screen: 1200 pixels. I think that 20" widescreen makes sense for photo editing as you have enough space for PS tools and still cca 1200X1600 pixels for the image. But with 20" monitor I prefere 4:3 as the wide screens win this size are not tall enough anymore.

Why are you looking at 22"? The resolution will be the same as 20" screens (wide or normal ones).

I am recomending lcd with matte screen - you can avoid the reflection of the sunlight :) Sometimes it's really annoying:/

Ok sorry I didn't see the date ;) but matte screens are much better, I am using glossy screen in photobooth and sometimes it's difficult to see anything...

Nothing wrong with reviving old threads - I'm always surprised how much I learn from the oldies but goodies.
