I've got the Schneider 3x and give it two thumbs up. There may be more economical or smaller ones but I doubt there is a better one.

Have no idea of best, or even what would be the criteria, but I quite like my Pentax loupe.

Is that 5.5X? One of my friend recommended this loupe.

I am VERY happy with my Horizon 4x (with square 50x50mm base). I find it sharp with good contrast and rather convenient to use I use it for ground glass focusing too. Recently I acquired a very small 8x Docter loupe. Very sharp, but after longer use it my eyes eventually start to hurt, so I try to use it just to check small details and sharpness. I had the Rodenstock 4x few times in hand and it was very good too.
