I just picked up a Thermolyne on eBay, and was wondering for those that use a stirrer/hot plate unit in the darkroom:

Does the unit emit a slight electrical-type odor when operating the hot plate?

Curious...'cause this one does.

I have an old, very well worn magnetic stirrer....no odor at all

I also have a NEW, Hot Plate Stirrer combination and it gave off the elecrical-type odor you described the first few times I used it. I don't use this very often, but I believe the last time I used it the odor was gone.

I have an old Thermolyne in my darkroom and the only discernible odor is of heat from previously spilled chemistry. If its odor is very strong it's a bit worrisome. Connect it in a safe place (outside) and let it run for a day. Check occasionally for smoke and fire. Or remove the outer case and check for burned or singed interior components.
