majestic gearhead question...

I am looking at a majestic gearhead to hold an heavy 8x10 monorail. They seem to have 3 series:
1000 series with 3/8" tripod mounts
1200 series with 1.5" post mounts
1900 series with 1 7/8" post mounts

My question is "is the 1000 series just a 1900 or 1200 series with the aluminium adaptor, ir is it a better mount in it's own right for a standard 3/8" tripod?"

Hope that makes sense...anyone actually have a 1000 series head? Does it have a removeable tripod mount?

1200 and 1900 with an adapter, can be used with 3/8" tripods, they are readily available. If you have a D&S or majestic tripod, you want the appropriate head for the post size.

I've had the 1000 series, and it is a solid drilled and tapped mount, not a post-mount with an adapter. I've also owned a Majestic tripod with a post-mount head.

Ditto for my experiences. The "post & plug" head is as sturdy as the"solid" head. They are a great for ULF cameras. A platform that is 6"x7" is hard to beat. Good luck.

True, the only thing that works better is the 10x12 platform on my Saltzman.

I guess what I have is the 1200 seriesbut could be the 1900. I use it on my studio stand and have two different platforms but mainly use the round 4 ?? Inch. I think its 4 inch. I hand also used it on my twin leg extra heavy duty majestin tripob. The tripod is the one with the extra heavy duty geared post designed to lift 50 pounds. Not Sure if its still made but I used it with a heavy 11x14 in the studio and onlocation with absolutely no problems. Very heavy duty and built to work a lifetime of hard use. I guess I've had mine since 1974.

Thanks - these are coming up on E-bay all the time. I guess I will go for the 1900 series with an adaptor to hold my Horseman 8x10 monorail (26 lb with lens, slide, filters hood etc).

These were mainstays in commercial studios when view cameras were regularly used. Now that digital has taken over, they generally aren't needed because of the smaller cameras used. They are very sturdy heads.
