I'll start us off with a portrait of my father-in-law done Thanksgiving day.

Fred W Gray

A good friend to me for 36 years and a truly grand father in every way.

Done with a 13" f4 Achromatic Meniscus no-name lens @ about f8 on the 8X10 2D.

Jim,
That is a simply wonderful image that exemplifies the sort of deeply personal care and emotion that the best of portraiture should evoke. Now if only you had some decent lenses to work with.
Best,

Jim, Your F-I-L portrait really touches my heart. It reminds me very much of the last portrait I took of my Dad, about 18 months ago. But I hate to say it... I hate it. It brings tears to my eyes because I see the mutual love and respect, but there isn't a single point of focus and I'm left rubbing my eyes wondering when the fog bank will lift. (and I even like soft focus) Next time, get closer. He's a handsome man... much more handsome than the swirlies in the empty background. Maybe I'd like it more if cropped to a "two-button"??

Most fotogs hate to be on the wrong side of the lens, but I would really want top shoot Al super tight if he'll sit still, he has a great face for it! It would make a great big print with lots of detail. (forgive me eddie, I cropped your frame to how I would want to shoot a sheet or two on this guy)

yeah, al is a good one to shoot. maybe i will get him back over and tie him to the chair....he was not too excited about sitting as it was......he is talking about shaving after he plays santa.....

Definitely NOT shaving, just a trim. I am a little too self-conscious for too many pictures, but Eddie helps take the fear out of it, and maybe I can learn how to make someone else relax on that side of the lens for me. So much to learn...

Frank, I assume that you are addressing your question to me...if not forgive me for responding. Of course there is manipulation in the printing of these images. Mostly masking (both sharp and unsharp) of the backrounds in the first two...a straight print on the third image. The facial tones in all of the images are as they are on the film.

Photography is a very personal thing, one man's treasure is another man's junk,
but I love that frame! :)
The wrinkles and raised eye brows are perfect.

I hope I will see that print in real time one day.

I envy you for having the time, energy and conviction to play with and master different processes. As my British cousins would say....Bloody Brilliant!

My son has reached that glorious age (2 years 10 months) when he is now interested in the photographic process, big cameras, and posing for photographs, esp. when he can wear his skeleton costume. This is one of my first experiments with a newly acquired Conley 5X7 self-casing camera (with rotating back) and a convertible Wollensak RR type lens. Open flash used.

Awesome photos, guys.

I finally took my first really good portrait with 4x5 film. It's of Adam, sitting on the couch, freezing his butt off because he's too stubborn to get a blanket. I'd show it to you, but I have to go have it scanned because the 2450 FINALLY completely pooped out on me. :p

Jim, I'm even more committed than you think because I hauled the semi-centennial 1A stand up there....! When you are hauling around a darkbox and other assorted wet plate paraphernalia, what's a HUGE stand?! :)

maybe we should get together as allen suggests. i also plan on using my studio stand, 10a, and huge lenses on location.

i am planning to out fit the stand with some "off road" wheels and take her out! i agree that it is so much better than a tripod.

I didn't get any more portraits today because I accidentally loaded the film the wrong way last night (long story short, I was very tired), but I did get to scan the one of Adam. It appears that my problems have been Viewscan related all along. I tried the TWAIN driver and it worked like a charm.

This is Adam. He's my boyfriend, and about the only person I can get to sit still for me at the moment. 210mm Geronar with a decent amount of fungus growing on the inside of the front element wide open at f/6.8 on Forte 400.

Frank, Thanks. The shadows are blocked out. Can't squeeze anything out of them. Strong Polaroids have this quality/defect. With film I would try for some detail.

When my hair started turning gray a few years back, my hope's were :
- retain a full head of hair (successful so far)
- that it would all turn the same shade of gray/silver/white (getting there slowly but surely)
- that the unruly hairs would make me look like Einstein instead of Alfred E. Newman (Thank you Turner Reich for the compliment.)

Thank you , also, Allen in Montreal for making me sit again ( you are right, I don't like being on the other side of the lens.) Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and I've gained a lot recently.
