Here's two I took a few nights ago. (I'm having a Graflex shipped out here.)

I've been waiting for about a month to get this shot. I did our command photo today and was able to have the helo parked where I wanted and the tail rotor rotated to unmask the unit's tail art. So after the sun went down all I had to do was wait for the airport across from us to shut down for the day and turn off their huge lights. Lucky me, they finished up at around 4am. But I got my shot and I'm very happy with it.

I have no idea what kind of bird this is, but I found him today:

All very cool photos!! Especially of the rivets on the second one.

Went to a car show last weekend. It's hard to get an isolated shot of a car without all the people being in it.

Great job; Basically nothing you can do about people being in the reflections on the beautiful surfaces. As far as being in the picture at all, use of depth of field is helpful at making them less distracting. (see my d-type wheel and nose in the old things thread) Longer lenses can make people cropped out, but at the expense of the 3-d shape of the car. I've found I've sometimes had to wait for a while for people to clear a scene, and then I only have a second or two before people wander back into the scene again. Sometimes I had to come back (and hope the cars were still there.) Thus, I appreciate good car show photos like this...

Yesterday was not a great day for landscape shots but I still took the Medalist on the hunt.

Tuco, this is a great shot. I see what appears to be a '39 Packard off to the right. But I think your subject might be a '35 Cord, but I can't really tell. It does have the pontoon fenders and the manifold ports. If I could just see the coffin nose ...

Great photo, great look.

Thank you!

It's takes a bit of editing. I start out by double processing the raw file in ACR. Dropping the clarity for the background and out of focus regions in one ACR edit and raising the clarity for the in focus subject in another. I also perform selective color adjustments for each ACR edit. Selective sharpening is done only the subject as well. Once in CS5 I mask them together. A soft focus type effect is performed on the background:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64-23bvHi3Q

And ColorEfex tonal contrast performed on the subject. These two operations result in more subject/background separation because of the more stark contrast in smoothness and detail/sharpness. The eyes are heavily dodged and sponged to increase saturation and brightness. I use SilverEfex to convert to black and white lowering the structure for the background. A red/orange filter is used on a separate SilverEfex edit to really bring out the eyes. That is then masked into the other SilverEfex layer. Both layers are toned in SilverEfex and the color further modified via a colorbalance layer to adjust colors from a green/blue to a more brown/red. A subtle but strong vignette is done by using a large soft brush to darken the edges while not being 'heavy' and readily apparent like a black overlay. Dodging the center with a large soft brush too.

Thanks. I believe it to be a 1937 American Cord 812 Sedan. If you look in at the hubcap reflection, you'll see what looks like a 1928 BMW 327/28 Cabriolet which I wrote down for the frame on this car. I took several pictures and came back and wrote down the car model but apparently recorded the wrong one for that car.

Thanks. Do you mean brand of filter? It's a Tiffen Center Spot Filter. It is a special effects filter that has a moderate degree of diffusion surrounding a clear central area. I've never used it much but on a wide angle lens it seems I get a lot more diffusion in the shot than with the portrait lens used in that girl shot.

Hanging out at a buddy's cabin. Be careful what you ask for. I had a slow shutter to get the needed DOF for this lens and asked these guys to freeze! They did and it looks like it too.

This is great! I think their expressions really make it actually. Looking at this picture, you can feel time just s-l-o-w-i-n-g down. I think they're waiting for winter to end. Reminds me of 'Fargo' for some reason.

Sorry about the ground glass. If it makes you feel any better, I've destroyed both a Toyo 4x5 and a Yashica Mat out in the field. You kind of go; "Wait-did that just really happen? Oh no, no no! Can I please take that last moment back? Please? Arrrgghhhh!!!!!"

No crying, just faces. A valley in Chitral in the NW of Pakistan. Theese people, the Kalash, descended from Alexander the Great's armies and are probably the only non Muslim people in Pakistan. Some of them dont like pictures, which is unusual for children who now expect cameras to have a screen on the back and come with a supply of sweeties. Probably one of the most stunning places on earth. Their culture is under threat and this area is now bothered by taliban insurgents.

I did not :(. I still keep 'experimenting' with the digital instead of 'wasting' film. I need to get over that. But I also need a 400+mm lens for 4x5. I hear ya on the landscapes. Tough gig when you feel it's uninspiring around you. I try and make my way hours north to Superior but that is all I like around me.

Corran
4-Oct-2011, 22:41
I know exactly what you mean about film vs. digital out in the field. I have started trying to NOT bring the digital camera at times and focus on film. But for a special trip I always bring digital so I know I have some shots. And consequently film suffers.

400mm+ lens has been helpful to me. Good luck in finding what you want! I scored with a Nikon 360/500/720 set in the classifieds on the cheap.

The closest landscapes I feel inspired by are about 10 hours away so that sucks for me.

I invite you to come visit southern GA. Unless you enjoy photographing the exact same expanse of pine trees over and over, you will be disappointed. Of course you could also try photographing some old buildings and risk getting shot by the locals (I have been chased off property that wasn't even owned by the threatening person).

Also I wish I could visit Maine.

I've spent the weekend in Braselton GA a couple of times, visiting Road Atlanta for motorsports activities. Yes you do have lots of pines in Georgia, but lots of nice small stuff in the woods too!

I've taken a liking to "intimate landscapes", even though we have some nice big landscape opportunities here in Maine. If I wanted scenics, I have to go no further than a calendar or postcard. I live across the street from the ocean and can walk to multiple beaches, but I turn down frequent scenic photo opportunities because I've seen them in better lighting conditions so I get fussy. Just being there and with a camera is not enough. The lights gotta be right, the tide right, etc...

Largely inspired by Porter and Thoreau, I enjoy going out for a hike in the dense woods here with a single lens on my DSLR, such as a 55 micro or a 300/2.8 and see what I can come back with. I'm often quite pleased. Eliot Porter was stuck on a <1 sq mile island for the whole summer and turned out lots of great stuff.

I'm sure there is lots of intimate landscape material in Georgia. Borrow a couple Eliot Porter books for color examples, or Paul Caponigro (especially the polaroid material) for B&W.

After soaking that in, head out into some woods for a couple hours with a camera and one lens.

Brasselton is not south Georgia. I've been to both.

I understand the points of both sides in this. I can shoot LF and find subject matter here in metro Atlanta, both nature and urban (and hell, even the suburban, like where I live, if I look hard enough) but it sure was easier in the mountains of east TN when I lived there, and still is when I go back to visit.

You can find subject matter anywhere, but it's also safe to say it's easier some places than in others.

Hi guys. A clarification: I registered that site now 4 years ago. I was still using my parents' address for things like that. I live right now in waaaaay south GA (I am 17 miles from FL). So yes, I am in the south, not Atlanta.

I have heard the same adages stating that you can find stuff to photograph anywhere. However I would say that while somewhat true, the other problem is being inspired by what you see. I was greatly inspired when I visited the Great Smoky Mountain National Park though! I do get out fairly normally to go photograph but I find my travels expanding ever outward, mostly towards Florida, which has a really diverse landscape (I'd like to visit closer to south FL). But within 10-15 miles of my place, it is pretty bleak. A city big enough to be ugly but not big enough to have cool buildings, and a couple wildlife areas that are 99% pines and dense cypress on flat swamps, and I just don't care about that, though I admit I like grand vistas but should focus more on intimate nature shots. I just got a real field camera (wood!) so I am planning on attempting more adventuresome LF rather than meticulously planned excursions with a 20lb monorail.

Also some exploring has lead to some bad run-ins with country folk like I described above.

Anyway, I see your point, and I hope you see my point a little better too.

Randy, Hello. Thank you.
This is a picture of Interstate 80, made near the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. It was about a 15 minute exposure made at night with my Yashica Mat. The film was Tri-X. Basically, what's happening here (the weird light does make it a puzzler) is that the foreground is lit from the lights of a rest stop (out of frame to the right), the street light, and from the passing cars and trucks. The line/streak of light on the horizon is the headlights of vehicles passing by on the freeway. The two little squares along the horizon are the exits signs for the rest stop. Also, though it's hard to see on the computer, if you look up near the top, you can see a few short star trails.

How is the coastline in that area? I hear where you're coming from. It seems after you've picked all the low hanging fruit in your area picture-wise it becomes more difficult to find good shots and you need to travel to find new turf when you're into landscapes.

Well the coastline for one is over 3 hours away. St. Simon's is nice for about 10 minutes but 90% of the island is private property with huge mansions. Maybe interesting if I want to risk being thrown out by security. The beach is plain vanilla with no outcroppings or broken up piers, at least that I've seen, so not a lot of foreground interest. Jekyll is okay but mostly touristy stuff (mini golf, etc.). I do need to explore more out there but a lot of the islands are accessible only by ferry and at limited times of the day (not the golden hour for sure!). I am planning a camping outing to Cumberland Island (wild horses, old ruins) soon which should be a great locale I hope but I gotta get the time / money as well as camping stuff.

Anyway, I'll not derail the thread any longer. I'm leaving in a minute for a barrier island in Florida for a 3-day getaway hopefully with many opportunities for LF as well as digital shots. Wish me luck!

Something totally different. On Sunday I went hiking with a friend a little bit outside of the usual trails. It takes about 20 miles of 4x4 on decommissioned logging roads to the start of this barely marked trail plus some scrambling on clear cuts left over logs and overgrown berry bushes (best place to meet a bear - black or grizzly judging by the scats). But boy is it worth it.
I took the Hasselblad with Distagon 60mm (hell of a lens BTW) a couple of rolls of TMY-2 on a light bag (good thinking based on the amount of scrambling...).

I started scanning the results.

After seeing my photos I've taken while deployed my public affairs office decided that they must have my photos. And that I need to be added to their roster of photogs on the base for taking official photos. Pretty happy about that. Did some flying today and took some more photos. And even took my old Graflex Speed Graphic along. But I will have to wait for a few weeks before I find out how those look. I wish I could have gotten a photo of the solder face when I pulled it out of my case and set it up mid flight.

You might try some slower shutter speeds for some of the photos where rotors or props are pictured.

Your last image reminds me of a B17 flight I took, but yours is more dramatic with the wide angle and bright sun, and mine is more geometric.

Essantialy I did not take my 4x5 for two reasons like everybody else:
1) Weight and bulk of the tripod

Yeah, poor attempt at making the sky darker. I think it looks better without it so I replaced it. And the guys here lock you out after a time period from replacing it preferring instead to see a big blank white space.

Interesting too is this camera puts a purple cast in the really dark areas (second shot which was so dark I needed a head lamp) much like I get from the New Protra 400 film.

What I don't get about photographing trains is you can take shots like in your scene but take one of it standing still at a train station and chances are they'll be all over you about it. Have you ever had any issues with that?

I have a Canon P with Canon 35/50/100 lenses. All in all a very nice little kit. But when I look at 35mm negative I still miss MF so practically my light kit has become either fixed lens camera (Autocord, GW690, Medalist) or the Hasselblad (I am leaning a lot toward selling the 50 FLE and the 150 to keep only the 60 and if possible get the 120 Makro for a two lens kit).

Hi Luc. I noticed you are developing with TMax at 1:9. Is there a reason you use this dilution over 1:4? I notice your skies are very nice. I still struggle with TMax to get the skies to not be 100% white without either using Pyrocat or a serious N- development. Just wondering.

According to what I read, Tmax at 1+9 is diluted enough to have a slight compensating effect and keep the highlight in check. It also increases slightly accutance just like Pyrocat does. Note that I use 17 minutes at 20c, one minute agitation then 10s every minute or so.
I use Pyrocat with Ilford film and Across. I just could not get Pyrocat to work for me with TMY-2.

Thanks for the info, that's what I was wondering. I tried 1+9 once and didn't notice much difference but I don't think I was looking for a compensating effect, just acuity. I will try again next time.

Might I suggest a separate small-format thread for nudes or otherwise NSFW images? The Nude thread in the Image Sharing section is clearly marked. I think it's prudent for when one may be at work or other place that such an image would not be appreciated.

And frankly, while I find nude images made with film interesting from an artistic point of view and have made them myself, that last one is simply crude and does not express anything of value. Of course that's just my opinion.

Ever heard of a lunch break? Ever heard of a public library computer (or using your computer in a public place)? Ever heard of self-employment? I apply to all of these at various times. NSFW is a general term for "don't open this up when in polite company, or someone who would not appreciate it," not just "not safe for work"

Why am I not surprised you included a backhanded insult. Typical.

Hi Zaitz,

I don't normally copy the image in a reply, but I thought it necessary in this case.

Is the indistinct area in the lower-left quadrant due to blowing sand? If so, how do you protect the equipment?

BTW, this whole dune series is great! Thanks.

Thank you! It was actually very easy. The wind really only blew the sand along the dunes and about a foot or so up. I felt like such an idiot. One day it started blowing really bad and I still had ~4 hours to wait before sunset. I tried laying down behind my big pack for protection. After about 45min of getting coated with sand I was done. I said that's it, I quit. Got up to leave and the sand was only hitting my shins and below.

The 4x5 is by far the cleanest piece of equipment from the trip. No sand at all in it. The really fine sand made it through the zipper and into all the film holders though. Probably just from the few times I needed to open it.

Thanks! The reply above explains most of it. Yup, that is blowing sand. I just stood up! It blew quite fierce at times, especially on the two highest dunes:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/5513/317gd.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/zboumeester/)

You can see on the left the blowing sand isn't very high at all.

I think that Acros calls for an orange filter. Yellow filter is not enough in that kind of range. It was OK on these shots but for many others the range (the way Acros lighten blue in the sky) was too much.

Cheers,

Some 6x7 I shot with an RB67 on 160VC just before I sold the camera. I'm going to miss that 50mm lens and can't wait until I can afford to get one for my new/old Mamiya 7II. It represented my 90mm's field of view very well and was great for site research/studies.

Very nice. Was a filter used or did the film separate those cirrus clouds from the sky without one?

I just bought three rolls of 120 Acros to give it a try. Weirdly, it's one of the least expensive films, probably THE least expensive from a major manufacturer, in 120 yet one of the most expensive in 4x5.

Thanks.

Medium Yellow filter plus a tad bit of burning. I do not have an orange filter in 77mm or 82mm but that was I would have used otherwise.
Grain, reciprocity and price are a good argument to use this film. I use FP4 in 4x5 and I am going to try Delta 100, once I choose one over the other in 4x5, then I might consider testing these in 120 to use only one slow film in both format. But then again grain, reciprocity and price :)

Cheers,

Luc
