I just got my Father-in-law's Kodak Medalist II back from a five-month, $400 stay with Ken Ruth. The 120 conversion and CLA is first class and well worth the wait and expense. I had shot a little 620 with it prior but with the CLA it is much nicer to focus. The magnified rangefinder is wonderful.

I'm real happy with the results, the bokeh, etc. I'm comparing this to Fuji 6x9s, Hasselblads, Rolleis, Mamiya 6s, roll film backs on 4x5s, and vintage folders... I think this camera is as good as any of them. So far my only complaint is how it balances off the strap lugs.

Just scanning from the Epson 4990 for now. Maybe I'll start using Edgar's Imacon more with 6x9 but for now the Epson does fine for posting, etc.

I still have some available. :D

About 20 sheets of HSI, two rolls of HIE, and one roll (just loaded it into the camera) of EIR. I have six cyan cc filters (5, 10, ..., 50) to play with for this roll and then I will have no further use for them. :(

I regret selling this lens recently as I wait to upgrade to FF.

No need to regret, 17-40/4L is every bit as good and some more for about the same price. At least mine is.

I am going in the opposite direction - since I am probably not going to upgrade to FF any time soon, I am seriously thinking about selling my 17-40...

I shot 17 rolls in 2010 and fell in love with it all over again. :(

I have to acknowledge that I and photographers like me were responsible though. I hadn't shot film since 1998 or so and even then hadn't shot Kodachrome since the early 80s, mainly because I could and did process E6 myself.

At least on the good side, shooting up a bunch of Kodachrome before the deadline was one of the things most instrumental in re-igniting my interest in photography. (A very artistically inclined girlfriend being the other one. :) )

I started this sickness in 2006 or so with a Nikon D50, then a fateful purchase of a Mamiya RB67, which started the landslide of old cool film cameras on up to and including 8x10. For some reason I never tried Kodachrome until right before Christmas when I bought the last 5 unexpired rolls off of eBay, had them fedexed to me for a trip to AZ to see my family, then fedexed to Dwayne's... I think all in all it cost about $30/roll, but I'm glad I did it as it will never happen again.

My girlfriend (now wife) taught to to develop film, so I'm with you on that one!

Interesting to meet people who started with digital and moved to film.

I started in photography in the middle to late 70s in Jr. High and High School. Oddly enough, I was into astronomy and my first interest was in developing astro photos, which quickly turned into photography as a hobby and being on the yearbook staff as the photographer. I did darkroom work in my parents' basement. In college I roomed with a ham radio buddy who had been the yearbook photographer at HIS school. Years later he ran a pro lab. I let it lapse for a while then got back into it in the mid to late 90s, with more money, and bought some stuff including my 4x5 enlarger from him back then, bought a 4x5 camera and built out a proper darkroom in my parents basement. In 1999 I moved to the Atlanta area and pretty much dropped photography as a hobby (I have others). In spite of moving back to TN for two and a half years I never got back into photography. I bought a Nikon Coolpix 995 for snapshots and recording events and such but that was it. I still have that old Nikon and it's my only digital aside from my iPhone. I moved back to Atlanta again in 2003.

Last year I started dating a wonderful woman who is very into all sorts of art and loved the fact I used to do photography, really loved the old Linhof when I showed it, and just generally sparked my interest again. She's mainly a poet but hangs out with artists and has quite a collection of various visual art (which she will shortly be hanging on our walls...) She definitely re-awakened the love of photography in my, but photography is my thing.

I was already feeling extremely antsy over not having had time to get the darkroom set back up yet (I did retrieve the gear from TN) and now double so because I saw a great photo of her on the TLR ground glass today that I can't wait to develop and print!

A tiny fraction of the Kodachrome I shot last year is up on my Flickr page:

Nice Kodachrome shots, and that's cool that you're back into it! ...I feel like if I ever get out of this hobby, I will become financially solvent again...

Also cool that you have a full darkroom. I have to Dexter the bathroom with a sheet of plastic every time I want to develop... so it tends to not happen that often unfortunately.

I have a lot more to add (not just the cat roll haha), but here is my flickr kr64 gallery:

Geez, this thread is getting long.

I caught these yesterday at Saintes Maries de la Mer. Beautiful sunnny day, spring break for some school kids.

I call the first one "Patience", the second "Hard Sell."

I did use a Fuji S5700 digital. My wife won't let me afford a Nikon or Canon.

Hi John,
Your creativity expressed through photography is really quite refreshing. Do you mind explaining how you come about these creations?...by that I mean the technical side of things. Are these photograms of graphic (pen, ink, and crayon) creations?

Best wishes,

hi donald

i don't mind at all ...
these last 2 images are photograms ... i hand coated paper with the cheapest of the liquid light emulsions.
this particular emulsion is 15 years old ( i figured i better use it up since i hate throwing things out ! )
i also was gifted some emulsion from ron mowry which is about a year old and used that as well.
i had no idea what would happen but i alternated coats between liquid light and ron's grade 3 azo type emulsion.
( 2 coats each ) ... i used a hake brush
after, i cut the 8x10 rough torn sheet into 4x5 sheets.
i exposed them with yard-stuff (evergreen branches, leaves, flowers &C ) for about 4 days ... mostly through a window...
the last day they didn't seem to get any darker so i just took some crayon and water colors and added color ... and scanned them.
i adjusted the levels to pretty much match the print ... photo emulsion can be a lot of fun
when it is used to make sunprints. lots of different colors come out of the emulsion, and if 2 different emulsions are used ( faux pas i have a feeling )
and a brush, well it can give interesting effects :)
the main down-side is these images can't be fixed. even with very weak slow and buffered hypo they bleach / turn to white.
i know i could rephotograph them but color film isn't permanent either.

as for how i come up with this stuff ...
i guess i am always looking for something to do
that is easy and i am not spending endless hours in the dark :)

Ibenac, nice pano. Can you elaborate on the head? I purchased a Manfroto head that is very confusing with all of it's options, scales, and dials. I was wanting to use it with my Mamiya TLR (I also have an Autocord...not as pretty as yours though).
How do you find the nodal point on a TLR?

Number 2 is a web on my garage/front door in Domazan. The web is occupied but so covered with road dust, I have to wonder how spider was able to sneak around.

Today I bought an old T&H Summarit for my Leicaroid. Should match in softness the 360mm Suter Stella on 8x10.

This is a recreation of an interesting effect that I had obtained with a digital last November at Joshua Tree. I returned there in April to expand on the photography I had made from the previous trip with another visit to the Cholla Garden.

This photo was made with a Bronica 6x6. The film is Efke IR used with an IR filter. I also used a close-up +1 lens to allow close focus and blur the background. Unlike the earlier photo, the chollas in the background do not exhibit the halo glow.

It turned out to be a truckrise. A few days later it was gone, which could have meant that it ending up in the Bering Sea, but a few months later I saw it around town.

Both grumpy and mean, actually. He had a troubled mind. He's gone now though-hopefully he found some peace on the other side.

Hey, this is an interesting twist: the liquid look mixed in with some more solid columnar shapes. Looks a bit like a red tornado hitting a Greek temple. Did the ancients have trailer parks?

Thanks Vaughn!

It's Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West in Scottsdale, AZ... my folks have a place in Scottsdale close by; we were there for Chistmas, and I was shooting my first and last Kodachrome ever. The place has hourly or so tours, I usually lag behind the tour and snap away... it's nice because you can get a shot without any people. I was going nuts with two Leicas (M6/R8) loaded with Kodachrome; I'm sure they thought I was on something.

During the tour, they show FLW's bedroom and his wife's bedroom, so it's sort of a private residence, sort of a school.

They still take architecture students at Taliesin, the students have to build their own shelters/homes up in the brush behind the main buildings. I'm no architect, but it's a pretty awesome place, definitely worth checking out.

There are more shots on my flickr (haven't posted them all yet, but I'm getting to it, maybe this weekend):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/urs0polar/sets/72157626738884862/with/5728862936/

... and you can find info on wikipedia and various places around the net:

Good luck to your son!

If you take your boy to Taliesen West , don't miss Paolo Soleri's place, or is it places? now. Go in the AZ monsoon season so you don't dry out too fast.

The males should be sitting the nest, the females feed them till the eggs hatch.

Beautiful photos. I'm a hummingbird fan. Hopefully my friends are hanging around till I get home to put out feeders in OK. I usually have them out on Good Friday. The little ones arrive on cue that day.

Thanks for the information and compliment. I have never seen a male at our feeder though. I suspect it's the same 1 or 2 females even later in the year. I am going to try and attract some more though. Would also like to get them by the flowers but they come in only for the feeder and then are gone.

My block was not harmed. These shots are from about 4 blocks over from my house. Very close, but I had no idea how close or how bad until I went to look last evening.

I saw some of the Joplin Missouri F4 storm damage on the news - it's a whole different dimension of devastation there. Nothing but rubble. We got off relatively easy.
