Cross shadow and dandelions overlooking Rockland Harbor, Rockland Maine. IR converted D5100 with Sigma 50 hsm lens. This was a real hit on the my facebook page, where people normally don't get excited about my B&W photos. I guess it's a neat mixture of texture, shapes, tone, and subject. I've had a IR converted D100 for ages, but borrowed a friends IR converted D5100 and was astounded. Dynamic range has improved greatly (as expected for a newer camera) which is very useful for IR as contrasts can be quite high for digital when sunny weather makes for good IR. Dynamic range is probably more useful in IR than in color since you can't judge it with your eyeballs.

So, what do you think of the Qualls monobath? It's impossible to see grain characteristics on-screen. Do you get any mottling or unevenness in areas of even tone such as skies? How's the tonal range?

Peter,
The tonal range is remarkably good for a method of development that allows no variations, and grain is much reduced compared to the same films developed in HC-110 or Rodinal. Mottling etc? - that's another story! I cannot make this work in a conventional tank. Only continuous rotation in a Rondinax works reliably, and the example above was done in a homemade motorised Rondinax. But outside the propensity to obvious surge marks, using this stuff in the Rondinax is actually well worthwhile. I started out making up the solution as a one-shot bath, but after investigating both pH and specific gravity, I felt confident enough to make up a litre for repeated use. I'm now at film #6 (I expect it to be good for ten) and I can see it changing as I go along. Less contrast than at first, but less tendency to unevenness too.

In short, I can't imagine why a curious person wouldn't want to explore this!

It's digital. For the general approach check out post 6838 in this thread. I can't believe that was 2 years ago.... A lot of that has to do with my raw files from the 5d.

Lots of aurora activity tonight. It's way down into the US and visible even with the moon in the sky. This is at Beech Hill in Rockport ME. A rare hill that's not totally wooded and accessible at night and without light pollution.

While I was letting my once-a-week Mexican Coca-Cola "breathe" before consumption, I decided to exercise my 1971 Asahi Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm 1:1.4 lens. This was shot at f/2, 1/25th, and ISO 100. Light source was the quiet early evening light coming through my north-facing living room window. When I proudly showed the image to the lovely Mrs. Welker she said; "I hope you did not leave any moisture rings on the living room end table". I guess all artists must suffer

Thanks again to Scott Schroeder for helping me find this wonderful lens. The build quality is exceptional and it renders images most wonderfully. Heck, using this little tank with my 5D3 is as addictive as the Mexican Coca-Cola

This is an old motel in downtown Burlington that, if what I hear is correct, is about to be converted into shelter for the homeless. If that is true, I applaud the city for funding such a thing. If not...well, that's how rumors start.

I shot this with a 60 year-old Ricoh 519 Rangefinder that has been my friend for 48 of those years. HP5 developed in Rodinal.

Yep, it was intended. That's 3200, very low light, no flash and probably 50/1.4 maybe 50/1.8 wide open. I have no idea what the shutter speed was but she's pretty sharp for those conditions.

At the Rockland Breakwater after sundown. The breakwater is in places submerged whenever tides exceed about 11 feet, which happens for an hour or two on a few days each month depending on how the earth and moon line up.

Thank you, Scott, for your thoughtful comments. The image is one of three in the same general area. I'll try to post the others when finished. The image was processed in LR & PS which enabled me to get the shadows and background trees exactly as desired.

Friend of mine got a drone so we've been test flying it a little bit. Tonight we tried it in the dark, to see how the camera worked in low light. Decided to go to a well-lit but remote post office parking lot that was in an open area. 15 minutes later the cops showed up to investigate, lame. Said we should go to the high school down the street. I asked what the difference was, they're both gov't property. He wasn't particularly pleased.

Anyway, shot this of the drone flying. Leica M9, 50mm f/1.1 Nokton:

Yeah and I'm not sure where the bar will be set with regards to flying drones. We discovered that I have a nice "helipad" in my yard where there's a storm drain and a straight shot up over the trees, but then where do you go? And who "owns" the airspace above your property? Anyway, too many political issues with this topic...

I haven't seen much of the footage yet (it is my friends toy, after all) but it seems to be decent. It's not as good as my GoPro4, which is of course not nearly as good as any DSLR, so, it's really not much to get excited about for us LF guys used to 20+ square inches of film!

Jmarmck
25-Jul-2015, 11:58
Thanks Bryan. This one was parked over Enigma just east of Tifton. It was moving your direction but very slowly. But this storm was really active. It was just a bit too far away. I was using a 70-200 zoom at 135mm. We had a electrical storm here earlier this week that was extremely dangerous. It has been many years since I have seen one like that. But I do not attempt taking pictures of those. I like these big thunderheads in the distance where the thunder can't be heard. The bolts shooting in around and through them is amazing.

Corran
25-Jul-2015, 13:05
I agree! I don't know of many places down here to shoot far-off storms except a fire tower that isn't really accessible in the late evenings (it's on military property, and I had a friend run out of there by military police at night before). The parking deck on campus works but it's a rather drab foreground for photos! 90% of the storms I've seen have no real bolts (that I see).

Jmarmck
25-Jul-2015, 13:32
That is why this time of year is the season. These are summer heating storms so there is little surrounding lower deck clouds. This makes the middle and upper portions visible at distance. The season is middle of July to middle of September. I have an old golf course as a front yard so there is some distance before trees. But there are a lot of city lights to the north (Albany) NE (Marine base) and NW (airport). I have to jerk around with the white balance. But if you can find a large field that should work. You only need a hundred yards or so to the tree line.

Corran

We're out in the middle of the lake in the canoe, sun gone over the mountains about 30 minutes ago, and I tell my wife to stop paddling every few minutes while I take photos. I'm She's probably thinking we'll be out in the real dark soon with bats and such. Oldest daughter took the kayak instead.

For a few minutes while the clouds were orange, the water looked like the cover of Porter's "In Wildness..." book but without the fall leaves and I couldn't get a nice photo of it. Then the sky cooled off and the water colors likewise.

I'm a fan of the water shapes from the paddles, partly because it's exciting to see, and I photograph it partly inspired by John Paul Caponigro's Resonance series.

HI took this a few nights ago after a concert at the Paramount Theater in Peekskill, NY.

The image is a composite of six bracketed shots taken at varying exposures and fused together to expand the dynamic range.

The lighting, despite the expanded range, required a fair amount of adjustment for pleasant balance.

The color temperature of the sodium vapor streetlights was a problem in particular. The orange-yellow of the streetlights cast an overpowering tint thru-out the image. This required a large amount of selective desaturation. I'm still not sure I took enough out.

There are at least 4 different types of lighting which add interest to the image - tungsten, metal halide, fluorescent, and sodium vapor.

I'd be interested to know how others have dealt with the color cast of SV streetlights.

This also comes across well as a B&W image.

I like those results a lot. I've used both the Jobo press kit and that Unicolor. I think they are one-in-the-same. But I dunno. I can't adjust the purple out of the blacks during scan to save my life with Portra 400 and my 9000ED. I'd really like to shoot more color on film but that kind of holds me back.

tuco,
I used the trick of scanning a blank frame with Vuescan, locking the exposure, then re-scanning, locked the film base and saved the settings as a preset for Portra 400. Then I did a raw scan and used ColorPerfect to get the colours just about right. Finally, in LR I used the WB dropper to find a neutral spot and clicked. Not much else needed. I don't usually go to those lengths, but the two portraits were taken under fluorescent light and the initial scans had green shadows, so I felt I ought to make the extra effort.

Thanks. I've been down the raw scan->ColorPerfect road some years ago. A roadblock at the time was ColorPerfect did not have OSX support. I don't know what it's like now. I've e-mailed the guy at Vuescan and asked if he'd add more color profiles for modern films but apparently he only updates it for running on scanners and not color scanning.

My girlfriend Meagan had to say goodbye recently to one of her favorite prints I've made. I donated THIS (http://valdostafilm.blogspot.com/2013/03/big-34x27-print-from-8x10-negative.html)big print to a local charity and it was auctioned off. I was surprised and elated that it ended up being the 3rd highest-priced piece in the auction. Now if only they would buy my prints when I have them at shows/galleries, as this one was actually at one time (it didn't sell, obviously, and was priced much lower than the auction hit). It's for a good cause though.

Here she is in front of the print as we left.

Is this a new lens? I looked it up and it sounds good. One guy mentioned it had to be calibrated for a M9 or something like that.

Corran
20-Aug-2015, 15:56
I think it came out around 2010. It's a really good lens. Some softness/spherical aberrations wide-open but quite sharp at f/1.4 or so and gets even better stopped further but there's no reason to use it stopped down anyway - other smaller/cheaper/better alternatives are available. It's got great DOF / 3D 'pop' at f/1.4 or so. Some barrel distortion, but not awful (not as bad as the Nikkor 50/1.2).

Focus is tough. Easier on the 0.85x VF of my M6. I calibrated my M9 specifically for this lens BUT it's also the only M-mount lens I own, so, I'm not the best person to ask about that (all my other lenses are adapted or screw-mount). However I find it easier to focus than a fast SLR lens, assuming I remember which way to turn the focus (it's backwards from all my Nikkors!).

tuco

Bryan,
It's a standard 35, with a K'nex cog wheel epoxied to the winding knob. I have a K'nex electric motor (all these bits supplied by my son, who was fond of K'nex when he was little) screwed to a baseboard, and that has some quarter round pinned to it so the tank can be placed on it and the motor engages the cog wheel. I can lift it off to pour out, return to the base board and pour in the next solution. 200ml is all it takes to fill up to the axle of the film reel.

The baseboard:

Tank in situ:
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/362/20002044451_385b1b8eec_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/wtvGXn)
New motorised Rondinax (https://flic.kr/p/wtvGXn) by chrism229 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/chrism229/), on Flickr

I made one modification since those pictures were taken, and that was to cut a slot under the edge of the tank below the winding knob. If I overfill it, solution will drain out from around the axle, and a slot lets it run through the board into a couple of layers of kitchen paper folded underneath, rather than accumulate on the base and risk wetting the motor. In an earlier version I did have a potentiometer to control speed, but it wasn't right for the job and it works fine without.

Very neat. I like the idea of an automatic rotary-style processor but I've never used one. I do color dip 'n' dunk style. Proper agitation is sometimes hard to do.

chrism
23-Aug-2015, 11:34
I tried it out with Diafine today. I was a bit hesitant, since Diafine gets grainy with too much agitation, but it worked quite nicely. Rather than double post, here is the result (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?118637-Tiny-Format-Portraits&p=1270378&viewfull=1#post1270378) in the Tiny Portraits thread.

Scott, beautiful photos! Mind if I ask what camera setup you have and also are these darkroom prints or scanned? Thanks!

Hey Brian. These are digital. 5D (original vwraion) and a super takumar 50mm. I post process in photoshop. I wrote up my PS stuff in this thread somewhere. It's more or less the same or similar to how I do it now.

I just got back from a trip to new Mexico and Colorado. I ran out of disc space so I had to buy a new drive today. So y'all are gonna get a boatload of photos soon. Haha.

The wider flowers photo is nice! Overall a good batch of photos.

I'm using my IR converted D800 (and 50/1.8 d af) for these at Rockland Breakwater lighthouse. I walk it with two cameras. Today the speed graphic was the 2nd camera, other days, it the TLR or color DSLR.

Take a read of Command and Control for some various tales about nuke weapon safety. Apparently the fuel and age of the rockets was more of a risk than the warhead. It's a cheap book used.

Yes, back in the 80's a couple of the older missile silos in Arkansas blew up due to aging and rocket fuel.
I also read that there were cancer issues in Cedar City, Utah from the weapons testing.

This does not have the special qualities that made Jeff's airplane shot so nice but for any of you airplane buffs out there maybe you can ID the plane. I shot this at an airshow in Aug 1990 using PXP + yellow filter. I think it is a Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar but can't say for sure.

That's how the front looked for sure, thanks. I don't recall what the tail looked like which would probably have helped a lot. I'd love to visit one of those plane gravy yards.

The "Lady Lodestar" was a regular on the airshow circuit- I saw it several times- until a difficult landing (due to a hydraulic failure) bent the structure enough to make it unairworthy and uneconomical to restore to flying condition. It sat for some years in VA and was nearly scrapped... now it's going to be a static restoration. Nice shot, Tuco.

I was finally able to get my 38mm XL onto my Linhof 70. It takes a bit of finagling, similar to using a really wide angle lens on a Linhof 4x5 by putting the front standard inside the box and focusing by moving it directly.

Shot a few photos today before a big thunderstorm rolled in. Notice the huge Wolf Spider on the front tree, which is what caught my eye first.
