This is one of my first 35mm prints made in 1998. The scan is today from a damaged print, that neg is somewhere. I just like this image better rotated. I believe this professional model is now covered in ink. I have another image hanging at my house and during a party a guest exclaimed, I know her! He updated me.

That's good. Like the start of Barbarella. Right-way-round it's a good, competent nude. Rotated, it takes a step away from reality. Wynn Bullock produced some images of rock pools which he showed upside down. They look quite unearthly and unrecognisable. As you turn they 'right way round' they suddenly change in a snap to become ordinary.

I was going for a 'pictorialist' look with these. I pushed Tri-X 2 stops and developed in Adonal 1+50 with constant agitation for 20min. I still didn't get the grain I was hoping for, but with a little help from PS, they turned out ok.

This is what passes for Art in my neighborhood. This is our front door. Notice my studio is listed in tiny letters. The tag is Latin Kings' pitchfork. This is put everywhere. The are the dominant gang in Humboldt Park. I emailed the City of Chicago and it was removed 1 hour later.

I was looking at the latest W magazine, I am a long time subscriber, and in the back they had a few images with very similar grain.

You are in good company, W has very good photographers and excellent designer Art.

This issue even featured a Chicago artist, what next?

at 3200 ISO I enjoy taking photographs in low light sans flash (hate flash....)

Grain beloved....

I shoot wet plate collodion as well.

I enjoy a photograph looking like a photograph with abnormalities in reality tipping it off

That's remarkably even tone for Delta 3200. Is there a trick to that?

I can't remember who you said this was (gf? wife?), but she should let you photograph her more often. But, then, I'm a sucker for almond eyes, so maybe it's not so much the photographer. :)

Nice images, but that is a fresh rebuild, it is way too clean.

I always have loved how after a rebuild they just spray paint the whole engine, usually even the hoses.

I think Cummins used to dip engines in paint, it was so thick. The thick paint also slowed initial leaks and drips.

I wish I had photographed all the damn engines I worked on...

Wow, nice! How much did you color correct the scan? I cross-processed Provia once and is was so horribly neon pink I couldn't do anything with it. Also what did you rate it at?

Thanks Bryan, I started out thinking I would not be able to color correct it at all but I saw possibilities in the preview so I went ahead and tweaked the curves on Epson Scan a little. I don't think I did much in PS afterwards. Strangely enough the Portra VC was impossible, came out really bad.
I rated it at 100ISO. I don't play much with ISO ever.

I didn't shoot the Portra in this same setting but I'll look for it and post it later. It's the 400ISO so it comes out very grainy. I prefer Provia's fine grain even if the colors come out a bit funky.

Thanks! Feels tiny and so easy to use after hauling 8x10 around though. :)

I just used the 80mm 2.8 lens for this, but put a Tiffen dark orange (#21) filter on it.

I bought the light online. I've never been to an Ikea store. It was about double the cost buying online, but the lights are very handy, especially with macro subjects, and they still aren't very expensive.

I was out looking to do bokeh test shots with lights in the background with my new Sigma 35mm/1.4 and came upon this scene. This Sigma has onion rings in the lights reportedly due to it's aspherical elements but in reality you don't see them that much it seems. If you are shooting with available light, usually the high values in lights get clipped. But if you are shooting with a flash fill on the subject you can see them and only if it's a really large diameter light in the background. Nevertheless, the lens is shaping up to be a good candid lens so far.

I've heard extension tubes on the 90mm TS-E are a good combination. Got $1k lying around? Not much flexibility with tubes.

The better alternative would be a micro-Nikkor on a Nikon bellows with a tilting front standard, adapted to my Canon. But I haven't found the deal on the bellows yet. I tried mounting the 24mm TSE lens on other adapted bellows, but it's performance in the macro range was poor, and the working distance too short. I have also tried using a tilting adapter with a reversed 80mm lens, but I just couldn't get the right combination of extension and coverage and the apparatus was too cumbersome with all the adaptations I was having to make.

Here's where mounting a DSLR body onto the Sinar would be quite useful. I may pick up one of those cheapie adapters just to play with it. Or not.

Pretty sure that's the first image I've seen here taken from the door of a tractor. Looks like somebody taught Hayden the rule of 3rds.

Sony's RX100 seems to get most of the press in that class of cameras, but the LX5 and LX7 produce some amazing images.

Yes we are, but my friend and partner in this project is more involved with that than I.

In fact the demolition of the place is a slow and tedious process because they are salvaging everything. The bricks used in much of the building are hand-made masonry dating to the late 17th century, and there is currently about 20 palettes of them packed and ready to ship to a salvage company which will resell them (that kind of thing is in vogue right now I guess). They are also stripping the hardwood floors and salvaging massive crossbeams that are something like 4-foot square beams made out of a single tree trunk.

I don't always position the hand at 10:08, and even when I do, the damn things just keep moving. That's why I should let them run down first. But most are automatics, and even run down, any movement will get them going again. I was squeezing these sessions into spare half hours, and my shortcuts show.

I'm working my way up to attempting some 4x5 work, just to see what's possible. But I'll need a whole day for that.

Well it's all subjective. Of course I come from a classical music background - it's either right or wrong. Only a little bit of leeway for interpretations (20th century chance music and the like obviously not withstanding).

My photographic mentor and I will often have long conversations/discussions about "art" and dissect contest winners and gallery shows. It's interesting. I recently presented a piece in an open show and did not get any of the 25 "accolades" given out. He said I was "robbed" and should've gotten at least one of the merit awards (who cares?). It is what it is. Of course discourse is often hard in little snippets on an internet forum...

Thanks, yes, the tripod and me. And I used the WLF instead of the prism too. ;) I also used a flash fill outdoors and added that filter to cut the ambient light down because of the slow 1/30 flash sync on that camera.

Shot a destination wedding all weekend for a good friend (bride). Best location I've ever been to. I like shooting weddings until I get home and have 1500+ photos to edit. Gah!

I was messing with a hair light and messed up the film images, but this DSLR one the hairlight did not fire, so... still gotta check the film as it was a comparison of X-Ray to FP4, but I know the hairlight is bad news. Too powerful and a bad choice for this guy.

But (IMVHO) a hairlight is always bad news. For good news point it at the background .

In November, 2012, vandals snuck onto the grounds of The Grotto and attacked a number of marble statues, including this one of Joseph and Jesus. Jesus' head was located in a dumpster at the nearby Travelodge. Joseph's head, however, has not been recovered. Remarking on the perpetrators, Father Jack Topper of The Grotto stated; "I feel sorry for the people who did this, because they're lacking something in their own life and I hope they find it someday." Randy, in my humble studio, tiny-format-digiroids have replaced instant film for setting up large format. They often turn out better; mostly because it's easy to tweak the right feel in mid-tone. Converting digiroids to b&w with the channel sliders helps choose the right filter. I expect to use a light green on those flowers today for Tmax.

Feeling a little Eliot Porter inspiration the other day. His island was about 30 miles away though. Rolleiflex automat tessar with Portra 160 film.
Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge (and former US Navy bombing range) near Matinicus Maine. I was out there fixing their Internet and phone at their solar powered shack and had some spare time while waiting on technical support.

Nice poochie pic! Squares do seem to create a different viewing experience. All of that 'rule of thirds' stuff goes out the window (or at least it can). Thanks for sharing.

No amplification; we get a strong signal the old fashioned way; lots of antenna gain and minimizing losses. Amps just raise the noise floor by amplifying noise, and aren't usually legal, and don't work well with newer tech like mimo radios.

As just a DIYer, I build my own firewall/router, radio to copper bridge and write my own security policy using Soekris (http://soekris.com/) boxes and embedding OpenBSD (http://www.openbsd.org/). The antenna hack I made once for the radio was just a small 3 dB omni on a 1A amplifier in front of a wok lid as the "parabolic dish". The darn thing actually worked great, I later found out. Figuring I could do better with a real antenna, I bought a 15 dB dish type ( don't remember the kind). The signal strength was never as strong, amp added or not, as the the wok lid. I can't say if that was the right antenna for the job or not. I didn't think much about it beyond that.

I used one of these: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20169658/ . It was about 1.5" away from the flower opening, pointing directly into the opening.

I bought one of these just becuase it looked cool. It soon found itself mounted to my milling machine. Great work light that stays put. I will by 2 more on my next trip.

I would also buy a couple but Chicago area IKEA is not worth the aggravation.

I cannot imagine IKEA in Canton is any better.

If fact I don't want to go near Detroit again, you have very high speed highways in and out of there. Surprised me on my last trip in January. 70 MPH speed limits in an urban area.

I checked because I was hoping there was one near you... I can handle western Michigan.

Accidental double exposure. The Bessa doesn't protect me from myself. It's pretty subtle though since the box was a bright subject. There wasn't much latitude left for a shady tree. Lomo Red Scale film, Unicolor C-41.

This shot was taken with my D800E, 35mm f/1.4 AI lens (love the rendering with it) at f/4, with a big reflector camera left:

Nice couple, I am glad I never shot a wedding. Although, I have shot spectator shots that the wedding party liked. The trick is to stay the heck away from the pro, they need all the space they can get.

Weddings are/were nerve-racking but I'm getting better and now am pretty comfortable with them. I've done 3 in the last 5 weeks! The part I don't like is the hours of editing afterwards though...
